The Nigerian Medical Association, NMA, in Oyo State has appealed to governments to give more incentives to health workers and doctors to reduce the ‘japa’ syndrome in Nigeria.
President of the union in the state, Dr Happy Adedapo made the appeal in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN on Thursday in Ibadan.
He remarked that the ‘japa’ syndrome, which was one of the major challenges of health workers in 2024, could be reduced to the barest minimum if the doctors were made comfortable.
“It’s not too much for the government to give car loans to doctors to encourage them and keep them in the system.
“We appeal to Gov. Makinde to pay the doctors working in the state the medical residency training fund.
“The adjusted consolidated medical salary scale that FG implemented should also be implemented for doctors in Oyo State as well.
“State workers should also enjoy the wage award. It’s not too much for the government to give more incentives to the doctors to encourage them.
“The japa syndrome should be reduced to the barest minimum.
“Soft car loans can be given to the doctors to keep them in the system and prevent them from leaving Nigeria,” he said.
Adedapo urged health workers and relevant stakeholders to work in synergy to improve healthcare delivery in Oyo State and Nigeria at large in 2025.

Following his face-off with his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, Governor Sim Fubara of Rivers State has said 2024 was not an easy year but it ended great.
Fubara disclosed this while speaking at the 2025 New Year State Banquet in Government House, Port Harcourt, on Wednesday night, a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Nelson Chukwudi said
He also described former governor of the state, Peter Odili as the beginning and end of politics in the state.
According to Fubara, Odili is the right face and image of Rivers State.
He said: “The beginning and the end of politics in this State is Sir Peter Odili. And if he is sitting with us here, and with these other persons, who do they have with them?
“This Odili is the right face and right image of our state. These are the frontiers of Rivers State politics. Men and women that have distinguished themselves are sitting with us here.
“People who have contributed in several ways to make Rivers State what it is, not rented people they bring for dinner.
“2024 was not an easy year, but it was great for us in the end. About this time last year, we were not in a very pleasant mood, for fear of what might happen, because of the boasting of those who believe they control life.”
The face-off between Wike and Fubara had led to Odili taking sides with the Rivers State governor.
Wike and Fubara have been at each other’s neck over who controls the political structure in Rivers State.
Despite President Bola Tinubu’s intervention, the duo have continued the cold war.
