The Ukrainian military on Sunday said it shot down 70 drones out of the 151 that Russia launched to attack the country overnight.
In a statement, Ukraine’s air force said 74 drones did not reach their targets, likely due to electronic warfare, and two were still in the air.
DAILY POST recalls that Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelenskiy over the week said Russia had launched 1,260 aerial bombs, almost 750 drones, and more than 10 missiles of various types against Ukraine.
According to Zelenskiy, Russian military production relies on sanctions evasion schemes, high oil prices and an insufficient number of Ukrainian long-range missiles and drones.
“We are grateful to all partners who are strengthening sanctions, but more global efforts are needed to decrease Russia’s oil industry capabilities,” Zelenskiy said on the Telegram messenger.
He further stated that Ukraine would expand the production of missiles and drones and urged all partners to invest in the Ukrainian defence industry.

Hamas on Sunday said the Israeli military has withdrawn from an area of Gaza known as the Netzarim corridor that bisects the enclave, a move that was expected under the ceasefire agreement between Israel and the Palestinian militant group.
An Israeli security source, who spoke to reporters on the condition of anonymity, confirmed that the Israeli military was withdrawing from its positions in central Gaza.
It was gathered that the Israeli forces had already reduced their presence there.
Hamas celebrated the withdrawal as a victory and the Hamas-run police force deployed to the area to manage the flow of the Palestinians crossing through.
The Israeli military had not commented on the development, but footage showed what appeared to be Israeli military vehicles moving away from the coast and towards the Israeli border.
DAILY POST reports that since the early months of the war, Israeli forces had occupied the roughly 4 mile-long corridor south of Gaza City that stretches from the Israeli border to the Mediterranean Sea.
The corridor cut off Gaza’s northern communities, including its largest metropolitan area, from the south.

The Palestinian health ministry on Sunday said Israeli security forces killed pregnant 23-year-old woman in the Nur Shams refugee camp in the occupied West Bank.
The heaLth ministry, in a statement said Sundos Jamal Mohammed Shalabi, who was eight months pregnant, was struck by Israeli gunfire, adding that the foetus also did not survive and that Shalabi’s husband was critically injured.
The Palestinian state news agency cited eyewitnesses as saying that Shalabi and her husband were shot by Israeli forces as they were trying to leave their home.
The Israeli military had said it was expanding a counter-terrorism operation in the north of the West Bank to Nur Shams, a refugee camp close to the Palestinian town Tulkarm.
According to officials, Israel’s military, police and intelligence services started the counter-terrorism operation in Jenin on January 21, describing it as a large-scale and significant military operation.
DAILY POST reports that the operation expanded to Tulkarm, Al Faraa and Tamun, with the military saying it was targeting militants.
Israel, viewing the West Bank as part of a multi-front war against Iranian-backed groups established around its borders, launched the operation after reaching a ceasefire in its war in Gaza against the Palestinian militant group Hamas.

The Chief Judge of Kogi State, Justice Josiah Majebi, has called for improved policing that will impact positively on the criminal justice administration sector.
Justice Majebi made the call weekend when the new Commissioner of Police in Kogi State Miller Dantawaye, paid a courtesy visit to his office at the Kogi State high Court in Lokoja.
He made a case for well-equipped and trained police personnel to boost the justice system in Kogi State.
Justice Majebi went further to emphasize the importance of the visit stating that any noticeable grey areas amongst agencies in the criminal administration sector would be sorted out.
According to him “It is no longer acceptable for the judiciary to be bashed for poor prosecution of cases. The essence of the visit is that in the Administration of Criminal Justice in the state, we are all partners and we always appreciate our partners who are performing and we urge those who are not to tell us their reasons for failing so that we can address them collectively.
“This is because the judiciary is always blamed in matters after court pronouncements despite the judiciary having other critical stakeholders. It is the facts presented before the court that qualify the court to either say the suspect is acquitted or jailed.
“But once a suspect is freed by the court, the judge is accused of taking bribe not knowing that he was left with the skeleton of the matter after the flesh and blood have been sucked. But here in Kogi State, we have Judges with a high reputation who are ready to sacrifice their blood for justice”.
Cautioning the Police on handling cases, especially trivial civil matters which shouldn’t have been taken to court, he reminded the number one cop in the state that individuals and institutions are liable for violation of people’s rights.
He cited issues of wrongful and prolonged detentions, especially over matters that should be resolved through Alternative Dispute Resolution, ADR, though cautioned against its abuse.
“As we always advice other stakeholders in the criminal justice administration through comments made by our Judges on false imprisonment, long period of detention of people, award of damages against individuals and institutions who contravene the law, police officers must be very careful and diligent in their duties”.
Justice Majebi reminded the commissioner of the need for absolute compliance with the 1999 Constitution (as amended) while advocating that the Police be “regularly lectured on the basic requirements of the constitution on crime, its prevention, management and prosecution of cases.
Earlier in his remarks, the new Commissioner of Police, Miller Dantawaye, argued that when he assumed office he ordered the decongestion of Police cells around various formations in the state.
He said the police would not succeed without the judiciary and demanded for “a strong synergy to achieve goals together”.
“To avoid over congestion in our cells, I have warned and directed already that, particularly in civil cases, I will have a problem with whoever populates my cells. The Inspector General of Police has warned against such civil cases and Kogi State Police Command must comply with the Inspector General of Police’ directive” he added.

An Assistant Superintendent of Police in Niger State, Shafi’u Bawa, on Saturday afternoon reportedly committed suicide.
Usman Bawa, the victim’s father, a resident of the Rigasa area in Kontagora, reported the matter to the police command after the incident occurred in Kontagora Local Government Area.
Officer Bawa was found hanging from the ceiling when his father entered the room on Saturday afternoon and discovered his lifeless body.
Shafi’u’s body was taken to the general hospital by Police officers, where he was confirmed dead. His remains were subsequently released to his family for burial in accordance with Islamic rites.
A police statement said, “Today, Saturday, 08/02/25, at approximately 14:10 hours, one Mr Usman Bawa, male, of Rigasa area in Kontagora, reported that his son, AP/No 337979, ASP Shafi’u Usman Bawa, committed suicide by hanging himself from the ceiling.”
It further explained that a medical doctor confirmed his death when the lifeless body was taken to the General Hospital, Kontagora, saying that the corpse was released to the family for burial according to Islamic rites.
The Niger State Police Command spokesperson, Wasiu Abiodun, could not respond when called to confirm the incident.

Perimeter fences within market affecting our businesses – Spare parts traders tell Makinde
Traders at the Araromi spare parts market, Agodi Gate in Ibadan have complained that the erection of perimeter fences at the front of their shops is affecting their businesses negatively.
The traders made this assertion during a visit to the market by DAILY POST at the weekend.
Our correspondent reports that Oyo State government is currently reconstructing roads within the market.
DAILY POST gathered that the contractor handling the project has begun the erection of perimeter fences at the front of shops that are along the roads in the market.
The traders, have, however, raised an alarm that the fences are blocking most of their shops.
The traders who lamented that the construction is currently affecting their sales negatively, appealed to the state government to prevail on the contractor to discontinue the erection of fence in the market.
A trader who identified himself as Solawumi Bankole, lamented low sales because of the fences blocking his shop.
“We just discovered that the contractor came in one day and began to erect perimeter fences. This is blocking our shops. This is affecting our sales. Customers are now afraid to come here because most of our shops have been blocked by the perimeter fences. As you can see that this is a market, erection of fences on the road is a way to block the shops and this is affecting our market”.
Another trader in the market, Ms Bimbo Temi appealed to Governor Seyi Makinde to prevail on the contractor to dismantle the fences.
She appealed to the governor to prevail on the contractor to discontinue the ongoing erection of fences in the market.
“We are using this medium to beg the governor to do something. This is a market. How can you put fences in the market of this nature? The fences are blocking our things here. We are selling spare parts. Customers are not coming to the market again because the shops on the roads have been blocked by the fences.
“I want to appeal to our governor to prevail on the contractor to dismantle the fences in the interest of the over one hundred thousand traders in this market. You also need to understand that this is the biggest spare parts market in the state. People do some from other towns, cities, villages and states to buy spare parts. If they cannot gain access to the things we are selling, how do you want them to patronise us? We are begging.
Another trader who identified himself as Obande Mike appealed to the governor to do something about the matter.
“I am using this medium to appeal to the governor to do something. We have over 100 thousand traders in this market. Our sales have been affected as a result of this development. We want the governor to do something”.
