As a nationwide strike action by Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, looms, Nigerians have been urged to prevail on the Federal Government to address the longstanding demands of the lecturers in order to avert the action.

Chairman of ASUU, University of Ilorin branch, Dr Alex Akanmu, while making the call on Thursday, listed the outstanding demands of the lecturers to include renegotiation of the 2009 ASUU-FG agreement, Sustainable Funding-Revitalizing of Universities, University Autonomy, Outstanding 25-35 percent Salary areas and Third-party deductions, Non-payment and Mainstreaming of Earned Academic Allowances in Universities.

Speaking on the renegotiation of the 2009 FG-ASUU agreement, Adamu said, “It is public knowledge that our salaries have remained virtually stagnant for the past 16 years, despite the clear understanding that the 2009 re negotiated agreement would be reviewed every three years.

“Unfortunately, it took the government a staggering eight years until 2017, to ever constitute renegotiation committee for this purpose.”

He added that said since then, “successive committees including the Wale Babalakin-led joint committee, the Professor Munzali Jubril-led committee and later the Late Emeritus Professor Nimi Briggs led committee, have been set up to engage ASUU.

“The outcome of these engagements, was a draft agreement reached in 2021 between ASUU and the Nimi Briggs led committee.

“However, despite the fact that the committee was appointed by the government itself, government has refused to sign the resulting draft.

“In the spirit of constructive engagement, ASUU, gave the current administration led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ample time to address the persistent challenges facing the public universities, but to our dismay, no concrete effort has been made to resolve these issues.”

According to the ASUU chairman, the Federal Government’s continued inaction has further pauperized Nigerian academics in comparison to their global counterparts.

“It is important to stress that ASUU, has not forgotten that all these negotiation efforts initiated by the Federal government itself, have led nowhere, as resulting draft agreements were never implemented.

“A true test of the government’s sincerity now lies in how it handles the Alhaji Yayale Ahmed report, submitted since February 2025, which encapsulates all contentious issues and reflects a consensus with our union.

“Our members are increasingly frustrated with the government’s delay tactics so called ‘keep them talking ‘ syndrome.

“The union is well aware of the planned meeting scheduled for August 28,2025, but the prevailing sentiment among our members is clear, they are no longer willing to be dragged along endlessly without tangible outcomes,” he declared.

Adamu further raised the alarm that the persistent erosion of varsity autonomy by the government continues with alarming impunity.

He said ASUU had opposed the unlawful dissolution of governing councils in public universities, even in instances where no misconduct has been reported and the councils have not completed their statutory tenure.

On the three and half months withheld salaries, as a result of the punitive ‘No Work, No Pay’ policy enforced by the previous administration during the 2023 strike, the union urged the government to promptly clear the outstanding payments in the interest of justice and industrial harmony.

Sports Psychologists Association of Nigeria, SPAN, has advised the National Sports Commission, NSC, to provide dedicated funding for multidisciplinary research on resilience, stress management and mental health in sports.

SPAN noted that this is necessary in order to generate context-specific and sustainable solutions in sector.

The association made this call at the end of its 38th annual conference held at the University of Ibadan.

In a communique signed by its President, Professor Olufemi Adegbesan and Secretary, Dr. Adesola Afuye and made available to DAILY POST on Thursday, SPAN maintained that grassroots and school sports programmes should embed resilience education to prepare young athletes for long-term success and holistic development.

DAILY POST reports that the conference which has ‘Psychological Resilience for Sustainable Sports Development in the 21st Century and Beyond’ as the theme was attended by scholars, coaches, athletes, policymakers and stakeholders in sports and education.

A professor of Social Work at the Lead City University, Ibadan Professor Jane Adebusuyi, while delivering the keynote address, emphasised the importance of resilience as a foundation for sustainable sports performance and national development.

The lead papers were presented by Dr. Mary Pindar from University of Maiduguri and Professor Prof J. B. Vipene from Rivers State University, Port Harcourt, who provided empirical and theoretical perspectives on resilience-building, athlete welfare and mental health in sports.

The association in the communique reaffirmed its commitment to advancing knowledge, practice and policy on psychological resilience as an indispensable pillar of sports development in Nigeria and globally.

It also advised that coaches, sports psychologists, and administrators must be trained to identify, nurture, and strengthen resilience among athletes at all levels of participation.

The association said, “Psychological resilience is a critical determinant of sustained athletic performance, mental health, and career longevity in sports. National and institutional sports policies should mainstream psychological resilience as a core component of athlete development frameworks.

“Coaches, sports psychologists, and administrators must be trained to identify, nurture, and strengthen resilience among athletes at all levels of participation. Grassroots and school sports programmes should embed resilience education to prepare young athletes for long-term success and holistic development.

“The National Sports Commission should provide dedicated funding for multidisciplinary research on resilience, stress management, and mental health in sports to generate context-specific and sustainable solutions. Sports psychologists should utilize digital tools and emerging technologies to enhance mental training, performance monitoring, and resilience-building strategies.

“Special attention must be given to the resilience needs of female athletes, para-athletes, and marginalized groups, recognizing their unique challenges and promoting inclusivity in sports development. Institutionalized social support networks presented as counseling, mentorship, and peer support systems, should be established to enhance athletes’ coping capacities and overall wellbeing.

“International partnerships should be fostered to share best practices, training models, and cross-cultural insights on resilience for sustainable sports development. All stakeholders must commit to embedding psychological resilience within the broader frameworks of sustainable sports development to ensure holistic growth, competitive excellence, and societal well-being in the 21st century and beyond.”

The Igbo National Council, INC, has unveiled a political movement that will advocate for effective political participation of the South-East region towards occupying vital positions in the nation’s political space.

Unveiling the members of the movement known as State Political Committee, SPC, in Owerri, Imo State, the Chairman of the Council, Mazi Nnamdi Aguguo, said that the committee is charged with the responsibility of promoting the activities of members of INC in political and electoral contest in the forthcoming 2027 general elections.

He observed that Igbo race constitutes over 32.8 percent of Nigeria’s population but regretted that the South-East is unable to convert the numerical strength to political advantage.

Aguguo remarked that the people of the region are virtually living in every community, town and state within the federation without effective political and economic link ups.

He hinted that INC observed that the uncoordinated synergies among the people of the region is the major setback in their bid to get a shot at the nation’s number one seat hence the formation of the movement.

Aguguo alleged that there is an orchestrated conspiracy and psychological warfare against the Igbo race, regretting that some political elites from the region have fallen victim to the conspiracy, hence the need for urgent political reorientation and sensitization before the next general elections.

“INC is very worried that the majority of the Igbo race have fallen victim to the conspiracy theory that has long been orchestrated and targeted against the Igbo in Nigeria.

“This coordinated psychological warfare waged against the Igbo race has caused untold damage to the political psych of larger population of the Igbo nation,” he further said.

The INC chairman informed that the committee which is being led by Chief Justice Ohaegbu has numerous roles to play in bringing the Igbo race together.

The committee, according to him, is comprised of five people that will serve within a period of three years.

He further disclosed that the committee will draft and propose guidelines for political participation of INC as an organization in the 2027 general elections also provide criteria for adoption of candidates the Council will support for elective positions.

Aguguo added that the members of the committee will also serve as think tank on political matters and help to coordinate some of the political activities of the Council, as maybe assigned to them.

Mustapha served as Comptroller-General from 1999 to 2003.

He retired from the Service in December 2003, after more than three decades of active duty.

His death was confirmed on Thursday by the Adamawa State Governor, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, in a statement shared on his social media pages.

“Deeply saddened by the passing of Alhaji Ahmed Aliyu Musdafa, former CG of Customs. A man of service, dignity & duty whose legacy will live on. My prayers are with Lamido Adamawa, the Musdafa royal family & all who mourn him. May Allah grant him Aljannah Firdaus,” Fintiri wrote.

Mustapha, an elder brother to the Lamido of Adamawa, Alhaji Dr. Muhammadu Barkindo Aliyu Mustapha, also held the traditional title of Sardauna Adamawa.

He joined the NCS as a young cadet and steadily rose through the ranks before his appointment as Comptroller-General in 1999, at the dawn of the Fourth Republic.

Obi, who came third during the 2023 presidential election, recently declared that he would run again in 2027.

To address the nation’s food insecurity, Otunba Segun Showunmi, convener of The Alternative, a pan-Nigeria movement, has urged President Bola Tinubu to empower more farmers and move them from subsistence to mechanized farming.

Showunmi asserted that when grassroot farmers are empowered with tractors, fertilizers and seedlings, the impact would be felt and there would be an increase in food production.

In addition to calling for greater farmer empowerment, he praised the President’s recent ban on the export of raw shea nuts, emphasising that the action will encourage local processing and add value within the nation rather than fattening the pockets of those outside.

The PDP chieftain also called on Ogun State governor, Dapo Abiodun, to see to the empowerment of true and responsible farmers to enable the state experience rise in food production.

Showunmi made the call on Wednesday in Abeokuta, during an advocacy meeting with farmers under the aegis of Agbe Gbe Lu Agro Network Limited, while urging them to encouraging their community members to register for the upcoming election.

Showunmi, who was represented by the Southwest Chairman of the Movement, Olusola Salau, described the farmers as a reliable group, expressing confidence that if empowered, there would be an increase of food production in the state.

He said, “They are not asking the government for lands they have theirs already. All they are asking is to end this primitive farming, that the government of Dapo Abiodun and President Bola Tinubu should key into their plight and give them tractors so that increase of food can be experienced in Ogun State.

“This people are not politicians, they are reliable when it comes to vote changes, although Otunba Showunmi is in PDP, he’s a brother to Prince Dapo Abiodun and Dapo Abiodun have gone to Brazil and knows the importance of farmers, so we are calling on the governor to see this group as an important one that should be empowered. Give them equipments to do their work so there would be increase in food in Ogun State.”

Speaking earlier, the Baale Agbe, Fohunola Ajani, revealed that politicians are the only beneficiaries of government empowerment, maintaining that after receiving farming equipment such as tractors among others, they (politicians) sell them off leaving real farmers to cultivate with hoes and cutlasses.

Meanwhile, one of the farmers, a septuagenarian identified as Ojeyinka Bamidele, bemoaned the government’s emphasis on training women and youths while ignoring the elderly, who are also farmers.

According to Bamidele, many young people alter their career paths after obtaining these funds, trainings, and even equipment, thus urging the government to restructure its selection and grant distribution criteria.

He said, “When they want to do training, they forget that those of us who are old are in the farm. They do training for youth and women, I wouldn’t say they should not continue to train the youth, but they should not forget those of us that are working, because many youth after receiving training, money and materials go away, but we are still on the farm.

“When they want to give us loans or whatever, it’s those in the office that usually collect it. For those of us working in the farm the condition they will give to us does not allow us to take the loan, so we want them to make sure that they do it easy for us to take loan.”

A violent clash between operatives of the Nigeria Police Force and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, in Amaeze community, Ivo Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, has left one policeman dead and several others injured.

Confirming the incident on Thursday, the Chairman of Ivo LGA, Emmanuel Ajah, said he was briefed by the Divisional Police Officer, DPO, of Ivo Division about the bloody confrontation between the two sister security agencies.

“I was informed by the DPO that there was a clash involving the police and civil defence officers in Amaeze community, and unfortunately, one police officer lost his life in the process,” Ajah stated.

Eyewitnesses from Amaeze community, who pleaded anonymity, alleged that the deceased policeman, identified as Shedrack, may have been mistakenly shot by his colleagues.

According to the source, trouble erupted when three Toyota Hilux vans conveying about 30 policemen reportedly double crossed and opened fire on an NSCDC van conveying mining equipment to a site in Amaeze.

“In the course of the fracas, Shedrack allegedly attempted to disarm a civil defence officer but when other policemen tried to shoot at the NSCDC operative, they mistakenly hit their colleague, who died on the spot, while some others sustained gunshot injuries,” the source said.

The dead police officer has been deposited in the morgue, while those injured were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.

The police and NSCDC authorities in Ebonyi are yet to issue official statements on the incident as at press time.

Efforts to get the reaction of the Ebonyi State Police Command were not successful as the Public Relations Officer, SP Joshua Ukandu, could not be reached for comments.

Social critic and public affairs analyst, Mahdi Shehu, has called on the National Assembly to stop making what he described as nonsensical laws and focus on addressing the real problems facing Nigerians.

Shehu, in a post on X on Thursday, argued that lawmakers have taken advantage of the docility of Nigerians to churn out laws that do not serve the majority of the people.

“The biggest affliction of democracy on people is that a few good, bad, fraudulent, or even dangerous are given or they snatch the monopoly to make laws for the majority,” he wrote. 

“Consequently, National Assembly members of Nigeria have taken the advantage, latitude and docility of Nigerians to make laws, some of which are sensible, quite many nonsensical and most of them stupid and dangerous.”

He urged the legislature to instead initiate bills that would tackle what he termed visible crimes affecting governance and development in the country. 

Among his proposals were laws that would classify narcotics trade, frequent foreign travels by public officials, budget padding, and frequent loan collections as forms of terrorism.

According to him, “We need a Narcotic Terrorism Act to declare all those selling, peddling and funding narcotic activities as terrorists because of its multidimensional implications.”

He also suggested a Budget Padding Terrorism Act to criminalize officials who inflate budgets, as well as a Frequent Travels Terrorism Act to sanction public officers who travel abroad at public expense while their states or the country face crises.

Shehu further called for strict laws against public officials who seek medical treatment abroad after contributing to the collapse of local health institutions.

“This country urgently needs laws to save Nigerians from deliberate terrorism acts by public office holders,” he added.

He listed areas like constituency projects, national grid collapse, and absenteeism by lawmakers as issues that should also be criminalized.
