The family of detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu, has declared that the Supreme Court is not above the constitution.

The family, which made the declaration in a statement signed by its spokesperson, Prince Emmanuel Kanu, was reacting to issues surrounding the ongoing terrorism trial of the IPOB leader.

The statement insisted that the justification of Kanu’s detention by the Supreme Court does not mean that it is not illegal.

The family urged Nigerians to stop worshipping judges and start respecting the law.

The statement read, “Many Nigerians wrongly believe “the law is what the Supreme Court says it is.”
That’s false. Section 1(3) of the Constitution is clear — if any act or judgment violates the Constitution, it’s void. Even the Supreme Court cannot legalize illegality.

“In criminal law, a discharge and acquittal means total freedom. Section 36(9) says no one shall be tried again for the same offence — that right is sacred and non-derogable.

“When the Court of Appeal frees someone (as was done in the case of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu) because the trial court had no jurisdiction, the case is over. You can’t “continue” a case that never legally existed. To attempt it is legal witchcraft — what lawyers call legal necromancy.

“Even the Supreme Court once admitted it in Ogbomor v. State (1985) — a void proceeding remains void forever. Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s case is void.

“Detaining someone after discharge is illegal under both the Constitution and Article 7 of the African Charter, which Nigeria has domesticated.

“So no, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s detention is not “lawful because the Supreme Court said so.” The Constitution is supreme — not the Supreme Court. Let’s stop worshipping judges and start respecting the law.”

Catholic missionary priest working in Gambia, Rev Fr Kelvin Ugwu, has criticised Nobel laureate Prof Wole Soyinka over what he described as the writer’s silence on the hardship facing Nigerians under President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

In a Facebook post titled ‘Prof Soyinka then vs Prof Soyinka now’, on Saturday, the priest compared Soyinka’s past activism under previous administrations to his perceived quietness in recent times.

Ugwu recalled that during the administrations of former presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan, Soyinka was outspoken, describing him as a “movement” and “social crusader” who openly challenged government excesses.

He noted, however, that Soyinka’s criticism became less vocal during late President Muhammadu Buhari’s tenure and has now, according to him, completely faded under Tinubu’s government.

“Then came Tinubu, a man with no clear identity and whose academic records are in question. In just two years in office, he has plunged Nigeria into deeper debt and Nigerians into multidimensional poverty,” Ugwu wrote.

He lamented that Soyinka, once a prominent voice for the masses, had “suddenly become deaf and dumb” under Tinubu’s administration, questioning what may have caused the change.

Ugwu also dismissed suggestions that ethnic loyalty was behind Soyinka’s silence, saying the Nobel laureate had criticised past Yoruba leaders, including Obasanjo.

He further insinuated that Tinubu’s influence over critics might be inexplicable, adding humorously that “if this is what people mean by juju, then juju is powerful”.

Troops of Operation Hadin Kai, OPHK, have killed at least nine terrorists during a fighting patrol at the Magumeri and Gajiram areas of Borno State on Friday.

This was contained in a statement by the Media Information Officer, Joint Task Force North East Operation Hadin Kai, Lieutenant Colonel Sani Uba, on Saturday.

According to him, a cash sum of N5 million, paid as ransom, was also recovered during the operation.

“The terrorists, reportedly moving on 2 vehicles and 24-foot fighters, were observed setting houses ablaze and terrorizing locals. Acting swiftly, their own troops launched an aggressive fighting patrol to intercept the threat.

“As troops advanced towards the objective, the terrorists attempted to flee towards Damjiyakiri village. Vehicle-borne fighters dispersed to an unknown location, while foot fighters were pursued over a distance of approximately 92 km.

“After about 4 hours of tactical pursuit, troops established contact with the fleeing terrorists. A frontal attack was immediately launched, and troops engaged the terrorists with a heavy barrage of fire, resulting in the neutralization of 5 terrorists, while the remaining 19 dispersed in disarray. Some were wounded as blood trails were observed at the contact scene,” he said.

The statement added that items recovered from the engagement include: one AK-47 rifle (Reg. No. 06798), five Magazines (3 empty, 2 loaded), 31 x 7.62mm rounds, one Itel mobile phone, and one dagger.

It further explained that no casualties or equipment losses were recorded by the OPHK troops during the operation,

The Oyo State Government has rejected calls to increase the retirement age for teachers and civil servants from 60 to 65 years, insisting that such a policy would limit job opportunities for young graduates in the state.

The Federal Government had earlier approved a similar age extension for clinically skilled health workers, citing the need to retain experienced professionals to strengthen healthcare delivery and enhance training capacity.

Following this, the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, urged that the same policy be extended to all public service sectors.

DAILY POST reports that Ekiti State Governor, Biodun Oyebanji, recently approved a five-year extension for teachers, raising the retirement age to 65 years, and the service period to 40 years, while Niger State announced plans to begin implementation from January 1, 2026.

However, speaking during the Second Multidisciplinary International Conference of the Postgraduate College, Lead City University, Ibadan, the Oyo State Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Mr Segun Olayiwola, said the state’s Executive Council had thoroughly debated the matter before deciding against its adoption.

“We discussed this issue at five different executive meetings. The initial focus was on teachers, but other civil servants later demanded inclusion,” Olayiwola explained.

“Eventually, we agreed that raising the retirement age would deny younger people employment opportunities. In a state like Niger, where the population and number of graduates are smaller, it may work.

“But in Oyo State, if those due to retire this year stayed an additional five years, the 15,000 teachers we recently recruited might never have had that opportunity.”

The commissioner emphasized that Governor Seyi Makinde’s administration would continue prioritizing youth employment and economic inclusion rather than prolonging tenure for those already in service.
