The Jigawa State Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission (JSPCACC) has secured a conviction against a former lawmaker, Hon. Shu’ibu Kashim Dila, for offences bordering on criminal conspiracy, breach of trust, and cheating.

Dila, who hails from Malam Madori Local Government Area, was sentenced by Chief Magistrate Abdullahi Ibrahim Aliyu of Chief Magistrate Court II, Dutse, following a six-month trial.

According to a statement signed by the Director of Education and Public Relations of the Commission, Yusuf Suleiman, the case was instituted after one Aisha Yusuf of Hadejia Local Government lodged a complaint through her legal representatives on February 17, 2025.

The complainant alleged that Dila, in conspiracy with his wife, deceitfully obtained ₦5 million from her under the pretext of repaying the money within one month. Both parties had executed a written agreement, but after the repayment period expired, the defendant allegedly sent his wife to an unknown location to evade payment.

Following an investigation, the Commission said the defendant made a confessional statement, and sufficient evidence established intent to defraud. Consequently, he was arraigned before the court on a three-count charge of criminal conspiracy, breach of trust, and cheating.

During the trial, the Commission’s prosecution team, led by Barrister Zubairu Haladu, called three witnesses and tendered two exhibits, while the defense called two witnesses but presented no exhibit.

In his judgment, Chief Magistrate Abdullahi Ibrahim Aliyu found Dila guilty on all counts.

Part of the judgment includes payment of a ₦50,000 fine or three months imprisonment for criminal breach of trust; a fine of ₦50,000 or three months imprisonment for cheating; a fine of ₦30,000 or two months imprisonment; payment of ₦5 million as restitution to the complainant or five years imprisonment in default; and payment of ₦250,000 to cover prosecution expenses or four months imprisonment in default.

The court further ordered that all sentences shall run consecutively.

The Nigerian Education Loan Fund, NELFUND, has approved a final reopening for a period of 48 hours to enable tertiary institutions yet to complete their student verification exercise to do so.

This is contained in a statement made available to newsmen in Abuja on Friday by Mrs Oseyemi Oluwatuyi, Director, Strategic Communications of the Fund.

Oluwatuyi said the portal would be accessible from 12:00 a.m. on Sunday, October 12, to 12:00 a.m. on Tuesday, October 14.

The extension, she said was intended to ensure that all eligible students were duly captured and verified by their respective institutions as part of the ongoing 2024/2025 NELFUND loan application process.

“Institutions are strongly advised to make full use of this final opportunity.

“Failure to complete the verification process within the stipulated period will result in the affected institutions forfeiting participation in the current loan cycle.

“A situation that will regrettably disadvantage their students who are the ultimate beneficiaries of the loan scheme,” she said.

She added that in the interest of transparency and accountability, the list of defaulting institutions would be published.

Oluwatuyi reiterated the Fund’s commitment to fostering equitable access to higher education through the efficient, transparent, and inclusive management of the scheme.

Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq of Kwara State on Friday described late former Governor Cornelius Olatunji Adebayo as a great leader, a bridge, and a shepherd who played very important roles at different moments of Nigerian history.

He said history will never forget how Adebayo acted with moral courage and humility, making him a hero of the people and good governance.

“Today, I join our community to again commiserate with the family, associates, friends, and the entire people of Kwara State on the passing of statesman and leader, His Excellency Cornelius Adebayo, CON,” the governor said in Ilorin at the wake-keep ceremony for the late patriot, Chief Adebayo.

“His Excellency, Cornelius Adebayo (CON), was a great leader, a bridge, and a shepherd who played very important roles at different moments of our history.

“Whether as a former governor, NADECO chieftain, minister of the Federal Republic, or an Afenifere leader, history testifies that he acted with moral courage and humility. He was always a hero of the people, democracy, and good governance.”

The governor was represented at the event by his deputy, Elder Kayode Alabi.

“As we mourn his departure, we are reminded that life is a fleeting journey, and what matters is a legacy of serving God and humanity,” the governor stated.

Family and friends took turns to praise the deceased, acknowledging his virtues, exceptional roles in the family and community, and his service to humanity.

One of his children, Bimbo Adewoye, said her father had a very large heart and was passionate about God and his family.

“My father dedicated his life to God, his family, and humanity. He believed anywhere he found himself was God’s making. He loved the family and promoted unity among his children,” she said.

Top attendees included Kwara First Lady, Ambassador Prof. Olufolake AbdulRazaq; Senator Umar Sadiq (Kwara North); House of Representatives member, Raheem Tunji Ajulọ-opin; Chief Judge of Kwara State, Justice Abiodun Adebara; and cabinet members.
