The Debt Management Office, DMO, says that the Federal Government has made robust budgetary provisions to offset Nigeria’s foreign and local debt.

DAILY POST gathered that in the Federal Government’s 2025 budget currently before the National Assembly, President Bola Tinubu’s administration plans to spend N16. 327 trillion on its debt obligations, out of the proposed expenditure of N49.7 trillion.

DMO, in a statement, said Nigeria’s debt management strategy conforms with relevant legislation, regulations, and international standards.

The agency further stated that the country had always consistently serviced its external and domestic debts, making its security a delight to investors at home and abroad.

According to DMO, the recent successful issuance of $2.2 billion Eurobonds on the international capital markets, which received subscriptions exceeding $9billion, was a demonstration of investor confidence in the nation’s instruments.

“Nigeria attracted a wide range of investors from multiple jurisdictions, including the UK, North America, Europe, Asia, the Middle East, and participation from Nigerian investors.

“It is an expression of continued investor confidence in the country’s sound macro-economic policy framework and prudent fiscal and monetary management.

“The transaction attracted a peak orderbook of more than nine billion dollars. This underscores the strong support for the transaction across geography and investor class.

“In addition, one of the landmark achievements of the Eurobond is that it opened up opportunities for banks and other corporate entities in the Eurobond market,” it said.

According to the agency, the growing interest in Federal Government bonds, Sukuk bonds, and other federal government securities reflected the country’s adherence to best practices in debt management.

The agency assured stakeholders that sufficient provisions had been made in the current Medium-Term Expenditure Framework, MTEF, running between 2025-2027 and annual budgets to meet the country’s debt service obligations.

DMO stressed that the Federal Government’s borrowing has helped deepen the domestic capital market, which has become very attractive to both local and foreign investors of various status.

Recall that the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, described the successful issuance of the Eurobonds as demonstration of increasing confidence in the government’s ongoing efforts to stabilise the economy, to be able to take its place in global socio-economic development.

“The broad range of investor appetite to invest in our Eurobonds is encouraging as we continue to diversify our funding sources and deepen our engagement with the international capital markets,” Edun had said.

In his comment following the last successful $2.2 billion Eurobond outing, the governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, Yemi Cardoso, said the outcome reflected growing investor confidence and the resilience of Nigeria’s credit.

Yobe State House of Assembly has given accelerated consideration to a bill seeking for the re-enactment of a law for water users in the state.

The bill, which was presented by the executive arm of government, has scaled through the second reading on the floor of the House after extensive deliberations by members.

Leading the debate on the bill, the majority leader of the House, Hon. Nasiru Hassan Yusuf said the bill would regulate how to use and control all surface and groundwater for the development of irrigation farming systems.

Hon. Nasiru Hassan Yusuf, who spoke on the importance of the bill, said when it passed into law, it would also control pollution, water contamination and flooding across the state.

Supporting the bill, members representing Karasuwa, Gujba, Gulani and Damagum constituencies: Hon. Adamu Dala Dogo; Hon. Bulama Bukar; Hon. Bunu Zanna Bularafa and Hon. Digma Maina Gana described the bill as one of the tools that would assist the government to enhance agricultural activities for the food security in the state.

Presiding over the sitting, the speaker of the House, Rt Hon. Chiroma Buba Mashio committed the bill to the joint House standing committees on water resources and that of agriculture for further legislative action.

Hundreds of reactions followed immediately, thanking God for his freedom.

DAILY POST reports that Okpala, a retired Archbishop of the Niger Province and Bishop of Nnewi, was released one month after he was abducted.

It could be recalled that he went missing on his way to Umuchu, a community in Anambra State for a burial ceremony.

Details of his release are still sketchy as of the time of filing this report, but it is being celebrated on various social media platforms of the Anglican Communion.

One of such platforms is the official Facebook page of St Stephens Anglican Church, Nnewi.

Kaduna-based Public Commentator, Mahdi Shehu, was on Tuesday remanded at the Kaduna correctional service facility.

He was arraigned at the Chief Magistrate Court 1, Kaduna, on two count charges of conspiracy, aiding and abetting terrorism, contrary to section 26 (2)(3) of the terrorism (Prevention & Prohibition) Act, 2022 and inciting public disturbances contrary to section 78 of the penal code law of Kaduna State, 2017.

Shehu had alleged in a post made on his X account of plans by the federal government to site a French military base in the north-east of Nigeria as reportedly claimed by the Niger Republic military leader, Abdourahamane Tchiani, which was later rebutted by the Nigerian government.

He was arrested by the Department of State Services, DSS, some days ago and was summarily arraigned at the Chief Magistrate Court for prosecution.

The Magistrate, Abubakar Lamido, remanded Shehu in the Correctional Service facility and adjourned to 14th January, 2025, for further hearing of the case.

The Wife of the Governor of Abia State, Mrs. Priscilla Otti has celebrated the first baby of the year in the State, Master Chiudo Favour, alongside three other newborns during her visit to the Aba South Primary Health Care Center.

During the visit on Wednesday, Mrs Otti presented N500,000 to Master Favour and N300,000 each to the other three babies, as well as bags of rice and other items.

Speaking at the Health Centre, Mrs. Otti congratulated the families and emphasized the Abia State government’s focus on improving healthcare services across the state.

She underscored the importance of exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of a baby’s life, urging mothers to embrace the practice.

Mrs. Otti also addressed healthcare workers at the center, commending their dedication and encouraging them to continue their life saving efforts.

Responding, the mother of the first baby of the year, Mrs Comfort Favour, expressed gratitude to Mrs. Otti and prayed for divine blessings upon her and the state government.

The Governor’s wife also visited Federal Medical Center Umuahia where she distributed additional gifts to mothers.

“Every child born in Abia State is a blessing, and it is our duty to support families during these precious moments,” she said.
