The United States President-elect, Donald Trump, has disclosed that his involvement brought about the ceasefire and hostage release agreement between Israel and Hamas.
Trump said the pressure from his incoming administration led to the agreement between Israel and Hamas.
The agreement, which would exchange Israeli hostages for Palestinian prisoners, awaits approval by Israel’s security cabinet before taking effect, after which the terms of a permanent end to the war would be negotiated.
Speaking on the Dan Bongino Show on Thursday, Trump said negotiations would have never been finalised without pressure from his team, including Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff.
Trump said: “If we weren’t involved in this deal, the deal would’ve never happened. We changed the course of it, and we changed it fast, and frankly, it better be done before I take the oath of office.”
Trump also blasted outgoing President Joe Biden for taking credit for the ceasefire agreement.
He called Biden “ungracious,” saying: “He didn’t do anything. If I didn’t do this, if we didn’t get involved, the hostages would never be out.”
Biden had proposed a ceasefire agreement last May with terms that mirrored the deal reached this week.
The ceasefire agreement under discussion proposes an initial 42-day ceasefire that would see the release of 33 hostages and the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza’s population centres.
The second phase of the agreement could bring a “permanent end to the war,” Biden said.

New York Mayor Eric Adams has flown to Florida to meet President-elect Donald Trump at his Mar-a-Lago residence.
The meeting comes amid the growing threat to Adams’ re-election chances and a possible federal indictment against him.
The Democratic politician, who did not make any announcement before the trip, had earlier vowed to cooperate with the incoming Trump administration, especially on efforts to deport undocumented immigrants.
However, Fabien Levy, Adams’ spokesperson, said the mayor had only the city’s interests in mind.
“Mayor Adams has made it quite clear his willingness to work with President-elect Trump and his incoming administration on behalf of New Yorkers — and that partnership with the federal government is critical to New York City’s success,” Levy said.
“The mayor looks forward to having a productive conversation with the incoming president on how we can move our city and country forward,” he added.
Many members of the Democratic Party have been critical of Adams’ perceived closeness to Trump, including his opponents in the upcoming Democratic New York mayoral primary.

The Presidency has announced that local government areas across Nigeria will, from the end of January, begin receiving their allocations directly from the Federal Allocation Account Committee, FAAC, marking a significant step towards local government autonomy.
The Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Media and Public Communications, Sunday Dare, made this announcement in an interview on Arise News on Thursday night.
Dare emphasised President Tinubu’s commitment to implementing the Supreme Court’s landmark July 2024 judgment, which declared state control over local government funds unconstitutional.
DAILY POST recalls that in a unanimous decision delivered by Justice Emmanuel Agbim, the Supreme Court of Nigeria held that allocations to local governments should either be paid directly or through states.
However, given the ineffectiveness of the latter, the court-mandated direct payments to local councils.
The judgment followed a suit filed by the Attorney General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, advocating for the financial autonomy of Nigeria’s 774 local government areas.
Speaking during the interview, Dare confirmed that the arrangements were now complete, paving the way for local governments to begin receiving funds directly by the end of January.
“We have a President who ensures local government autonomy. I spoke to a local government chairman, who said, ‘Oh, I will be getting N2.9bn, instead of the N200m I was getting before.’
“From the end of this month, LG will receive the money directly. One state collected N499 billion last year—nearly four times its previous allocation—yet there’s little to show for it,” Dare explained.
The presidential spokesman also called for greater scrutiny of state and local government financial management.
He emphasised that while the Federal Government often faces criticism, attention must also shift to how states and local governments utilise their resources.
“The framers of our constitution created the three tiers of government for a reason. It’s time to hold states and local governments accountable,” Dare added.
