A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Ayekooto Akindele has alleged that the decision of the US President Donald Trump to designate Nigeria as Country of Particular Concerns followed the Nigerian government’s rejection of US “strange proposal”.
President Trump had on Friday, tagged Nigeria CPC, placing the country on watch list following claims of Christian massacre in the country.
DAILY POST reports that prior to the designation, some lawmakers and religious freedom fighters in the US had alleged that over 30 Christians are being killed every day by Islamic extremists in Nigeria.
The claim has since been debunked by the presidency as government officials in counter claims, said the security crisis in the country has no religious inclination.
But Trump in a statement on Friday said the US cannot be watching while Christians are being persecuted in Nigeria.
Reacting to Trump’s move, Ayekooto in an X post on Saturday attributed the decision to the refusal of the Nigerian government to accept illegal immigrants reported from the US.
Ayekooto also alleged that Nigeria’s decision “to pursue economic liberties with every global economic organisation”, triggered the move by the US government.
He wrote, “Donald Trump, Nigeria is not a country to mess with. We are multi-religious and multi-cultural. A country where the President is a Muslim and his wife is a Pastor should tell you more about our lives here. Do you want to rescue the First Lady from her Husband?
“And you know we are a country of particular concern, yet you attempted to deport illegal immigrants of other nations to this country but because we rejected the strange proposal, and also decided to pursue economic liberties with every global economic organisation, we suddenly became your country of concern!”

Trump cares more about Nigerians than Tinubu, other elected leaders – Timi Frank on CPC designation
Former Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Comrade Timi Frank, has backed the United States President Donald Trump for declaring Nigeria a “Country of Particular Concern” (CPC) over persistent human rights violations and the government’s failure to protect citizens from killings and insecurity.
According to him, the move by the US president showed he cares more about ordinary Nigerians than most elected leaders in the country, including President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Frank disclosed this in a statement on Saturday.
He also called for targeted sanctions against corrupt Nigerian government officials fuelling insecurity and impunity in the country.
Recall that Trump had on Friday announced that the United States is designating Nigeria as a “country of particular concern” over what he described as widespread attacks on Christians in Nigeria.
Reacting, Timi Frank described U.S. action as a bold and long-overdue decision, saying it reflects international recognition of the Nigerian government’s negligence in the face of growing atrocities and systemic corruption.
“We commend President Trump for taking this stand; it is long overdue,” Frank said.
“By this action, President Trump has shown he cares more about the welfare and safety of ordinary Nigerians than those elected to lead them.”
“We appeal to the United States to protect ordinary Nigerians from the fallout of sanctions after due investigations.
“The measures should be directed at those directly responsible for the atrocities, not at citizens already suffering from the government’s failures, Christians and non-Christians alike,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Nigerian government rejected the US designation of the country as a CPC, saying the claims do not reflect reality on the ground.
