The Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council, OYC, has rejected U.S. military action in Nigeria for religious purposes and instead advocated for military action to facilitate an urgent referendum in Nigeria.

The council expressed concerns that the proposed U.S. military action, as announced by President Donald Trump, would be counterproductive in addressing Nigeria’s longstanding issues, which have resulted in the killings of Christians.

The National President of the Ohanaeze Youth Council (OYC), Comrade Igboayaka O. Igboayaka, who addressed journalists in Owerri on Wednesday, stated that the Igbo people appreciate the concern of the United States regarding the deliberate killings of Christians in Nigeria, particularly in Eastern Nigeria and the Middle Belt.

However, the group advocated that military action should not be based on religious purposes, but rather to persuade the Federal Government to initiate an urgent referendum within a political framework.

According to OYC, the Igbo people have no need for U.S. military intervention on perceived religious grounds; rather, they suggested that Ndigbo urgently require a referendum in Nigeria.

“A referendum is currently the most pressing requirement for Nigeria. The crowning achievement of our era would be to drive Nigeria towards an eventual referendum. This perspective is not only shared by the Ohanaeze Youth Council (OYC), but also by the emerging generation of Igbo extraction and Middle Belt various ethnic groups.

“A referendum is the sole factor that can resonate with the conscience of an Igbo individual or Christian in Nigeria, rather than U.S. military backing for religious reasons. The Christian killings in Eastern Nigeria, particularly in the Southeast geopolitical zone, took a swift dimension since 2015 when a Muslim president, the late Muhammadu Buhari, assumed office.

“It is on record that the Federal Government of Nigeria is using the pretext of countering the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), a self-determination movement from Southeast Nigeria led by Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, to conceal the deliberate killing of Christians, who make up approximately 95% of IPOB members, at the hands of Federal Government troops.

“The last ten years’ administration of Muslim presidents in Nigeria, from late President Muhammadu Buhari to the current President Bola Tinubu, thousands of Christians in Northern Nigeria, mostly in the Middle Belt and Southeast, have been slaughtered by Fulani herdsmen, bandits, and jihadists. The extra-judicial killings perpetrated by Nigerian military troops in Southeast Nigeria are evidence of Christian genocide.

“A report from the International Society for Civil Liberties and Rule of Law (Intersociety), a prominent civil rights organization in Nigeria, reveals that in the Southeast, from August 2015 to December 2020, top military commanders sent to Eastern Nigeria were Muslims as they conspired and adopted at least 5,000 Christians who were majorly members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). Additionally, from 2015 to 2024, 46,800 Christians were slaughtered collectively by Nigerian military troops, Fulani herdsmen, and bandits.

“In Northern Nigeria and other parts, from 2009–2023, 52,250 Christians were slaughtered/killed, while those abducted without returning to their families from 2009–2015 are 18,000 Christians. In summary, from 2009–May 2023, 125,000 Christians have been killed in Nigeria.

“A reported incident occurred in January 2017, in which Nigerian military troops deliberately killed 20 and injured over 70 peaceful protesters from the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), who were commemorating President Donald Trump’s victory.

“We respectfully request that President Donald Trump consider commemorating a mass burial for the unarmed innocent Christian protesters of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) who were celebrating his victory and simultaneously call for the release of their leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

“Furthermore, evidence of mass killings of Christians in Nigeria is supported by statistics from the National Bureau of Statistics, which show that from May 2023 to April 2024, insecurity led to the killing of 614,373 Nigerians.

“The Council urges President Donald Trump to facilitate an end to Christian genocide by supporting Nigerian Christians in conducting a referendum within one year, thereby minimizing further casualties.

“We beckon on President Donald Trump to know that Christian killings in Nigeria are driven by economic interests, territorial or land-grabbing ambitions, ethnic cleansing, and political oligarchy systems, utilizing Fulani herdsmen, bandits, and jihadists as a platform for destruction against Christians in Nigeria.

The group implored President Donald Trump to wield his authority as a Christian to deliver Christians in Africa, especially in Nigeria, from persecution, stressing that inaction now may lead to his successors showing little interest in resolving the issue.

“President Donald Trump’s proposal for military action on religious grounds may yield a temporary, partial solution to the Christian genocide in Nigeria, but a lasting solution can only be achieved through the convocation of a referendum.

“The world should know that late President Muhammadu Buhari walked on the corpses of Christians to force his re-election and seated comfortably on the graves of Christians, and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu was not moved by the killings of Christians in Eastern Nigeria (Igboland) by Nigerian military troops. The 2024–2025 massacres of Christians in Plateau State, Benue, Kaduna, Kebbi, Borno, etc., by bandits, Fulani herdsmen, and jihadists continue. The consciousness of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is how to rig the 2027 presidential election on the flowing and spilling blood of innocent Christians.

“A genuine approach to resolving Nigeria’s problems and the threats faced by Christians necessitates an immediate national referendum; otherwise, the killings of Igbos under the guise of combating the self-determination group IPOB and the massacre of Christians in the Middle Belt may lead to a war based on religion and ethnicity.

“It is imperative that President Donald Trump understands that the four years’ incarceration of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), a self-determination group, by two presidents of Muslim faith, President Muhammadu Buhari and Bola Ahmed Tinubu — resulted from his expository broadcasts on the killings of Christians in Nigeria through Radio Biafra.”

Governor Dikko Radda of Katsina State has presented the 2026 Appropriation Bill of N897,865,078,282.05 to the State House of Assembly.

The proposed budget, according to the governor, was submitted for the House’s consideration during its presentation at the Chamber of the State House of Assembly.

The governor said, “Mr Speaker, honourable members, it is therefore my honour and privilege, as the Executive Governor of Katsina State, to present before this esteemed House the highlights of the 2026 Appropriation Bill.”

He explained that the total size of the budget is the sum of N897,865,078,282.05, each for revenue and expenditure.

He stated that the recurrent expenditure is N167,725,372,458.50, representing 18.68%, and the capital expenditure is N730,139,705,823.55, representing 81.32%.

Radda said that the total budget, when compared with that of 2025, reflects an increase of N205,620,628,768.18, representing a 29.70% increase.

He further noted that the recurrent revenue was N577,721,259,831.18, comprising a FAAC component of N489,141,132,718.38 and an IGR of N88,580,127,112.80.

He explained that this represents an increase of N117,738,941,478.55, or 26%.

The governor also highlighted his administration’s community-driven approach to ending insecurity in 2025, stressing that this approach to security is now widely adopted.

“Legislation has increased in importance for security. While we have made progress, further action is needed to fully address the insecurity in the city,” the governor explained.

He said that they have implemented measures as part of their security plan, pointing out that they have engaged and trained 1,100 community volunteers, working closely with community watch groups in all frontline local governments.

The governor said they must sustain joint security operations to ensure a smooth and productive farming season.

He noted that the state government has conducted a group exercise for part three of their 200 community watch personnel and provided monthly allowances to 1,279 security support groups, 6,650 chief ward heads, 2,525 imams, 2,550 liners, and 2,559 leads across wards and districts.

He added that the government deployed an additional 200 members to help boost community protection gains in the fight against insecurity.

Radda stated that the budget includes provisions for solar power plant installations, replacement of chains of 8, and an additional number of APC armoured conveyor belt personnel for security operations in the state, as well as land acquisition.

In preparing the 2026 fiscal proposal, he explained that each ministry, department, and agency was thoroughly engaged and prepared to invest in self-management.

The Speaker of the Katsina State House of Assembly, Nasir Daura, while responding, explained that the House has consistently listened with keen attention to the Radda administration’s comprehensive review of the 2025 budget performance and projections for the 2026 fiscal year.

He said that throughout the year, the governor has maintained steady economic growth and ensured that public resources are effectively utilised for the benefit of citizens.

According to the Speaker, “We must commend you for your sustained efforts towards security, peace, and stability throughout the state.”

The former army chief stated that the recent statements credited to Trump, declaring Nigeria a “Country of Particular Concern” and hinting at possible US military operations to “defend Nigerian Christians,” should be approached with caution.

The Simon Ekpa-led Biafra Republic Government in Exile has commenced another round of civil disobedience in protest of the prolonged detention of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB.

The pro-Biafra movement is now asking residents to boycott the Anambra guber election on November 8, 2025.

Further BRGIE has also declared a three-day sit-at-home in south-east Nigeria over the continued detention of Kanu.

In a statement on Wednesday by its acting Prime Minister, Ogechukwu Nkere, the group said the sit-at-home would hold on November 6, 7, and 8, 2025, respectively.

DAILY POST reports that the sit-at-home is believed to be an attempt to frustrate the Anambra governorship election.

It noted that the next move is for the US under President Trump to sanction the Nigerian government and leaders.
