The Senior Pastor of Guiding Light Assembly, Wale Adefarasin has reacted to United States’ claims of genocide against Christians in Nigeria, describing them as exaggerated and questioning America’s sudden concern for Nigerian Christians.

In a video that went viral on Monday, Pastor Adefarasin criticised what he described as an exaggerated Western narrative portraying Nigerian Christians as victims of genocide.

“For 40 years that I’ve been a Christian, there have been killings in southern Kaduna, killings on the Plateau, and riots,” he said. “This isn’t new. It’s wrong, yes—but it’s not genocide. The way the West talks about it, you’d think a Christian can’t step outside without being killed.”

The cleric acknowledged that attacks on Christians in parts of the country were real and condemnable but insisted they were not part of a new or coordinated extermination campaign.

Adefarasin went further to suggest that the West’s renewed concern might be less about religion and more about Nigeria’s growing economic and strategic significance.

“I’m trying to understand this sudden affection for Christians. Is it because Nigeria now has one of the largest refineries in the world and no longer needs to export crude? Or is it about the new minerals in our soil that are vital for nuclear energy and electric vehicles?”

His comments come amid rising diplomatic tension following Donald Trump’s threat of possible U.S. military intervention in Nigeria over what he described as the mass killing of Christians.

He affirmed that he wished to be remembered as one of those who unequivocally opposed what he described as President Donald Trump’s “foreign military aggression” toward Nigeria.

The former lawmaker also rejected Trump’s description of Nigeria as a “disgraced country,” stressing that no citizen who honours the land of their birth should accept such a label.

“My country is not a ‘disgraced country’ and will never be a ‘disgraced country.

“Anyone who is proud of the mother who gave him life in his ancestral land will not accept his land being called disgraced,” he said.

According to him, Nigeria has never colonised, enslaved, invaded, or bombed other nations, nor plundered their resources, and therefore does not deserve to be spoken of in such terms.

Sani urged the Nigerian government to intensify efforts to safeguard citizens and reinforce national security, describing Nigeria as “the only country we can live in without a visa or request for a visa.”

He said, “As a democrat, I respect the views of those who think otherwise. But I will never share in the opinion of those who support foreign aggression and I want history to record it that way.”

The Lagos State Government has unveiled plans to digitise and automate the approval process for telecommunication infrastructure projects through the introduction of the Telecommunication Infrastructure Regulatory System, TIRS, set to launch in February 2026.

This was disclosed in a statement signed by Prince Oyekanmi Elegushi, General Manager of the Lagos State Infrastructure Maintenance Regulatory Agency, LASIMRA.

According to Elegushi, the new system will ensure that all telecommunication infrastructure projects across the state strictly adhere to regulatory standards while improving transparency, efficiency, and accountability.

He explained that the TIRS platform will streamline the process of obtaining permits for the installation of masts, towers, and right-of-way for fiber optic cables, thereby eliminating bureaucratic bottlenecks and unnecessary physical interactions.

“The implementation of the Telecommunication Infrastructure Regulatory System, TIRS, is expected to significantly enhance transparency and accountability, minimizing human interaction by as much as 99 per cent.

Companies will now be able to apply for infrastructure permits such as masts, towers, and fiber optic right-of-way online, reducing the need for physical visits,” Elegushi said.

The LASIMRA boss revealed that a comprehensive training programme had been completed for all departments and units within the agency to ensure a seamless transition to the new digital platform once it becomes operational.

He stated that the training covered both theoretical and practical aspects of the TIRS, equipping LASIMRA personnel with the necessary skills to effectively manage and oversee telecom infrastructure approvals through the system.

Elegushi reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to creating a sustainable, transparent, and investor-friendly regulatory environment for telecom operators and infrastructure providers.

He added that the introduction of the TIRS platform aligns with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s vision of advancing digital governance and improving service delivery through technology-driven solutions.

Security forces and government officials are responsible for most of the attacks, harassment, and intimidation faced by journalists in Nigeria, according to a new report by Media Rights Agenda (MRA).

The 129-page report, titled “When Protectors Become Predators: The State against Freedom of Expression in Nigeria,” was released on Monday to mark the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists. It covers violations recorded between January 1 and October 31, 2025.

MRA reports that government actors are responsible for almost 74% of all recorded abuses against journalists during this time. The Nigeria Police Force, which represents 45% of the incidences involved, was the single-largest perpetrator of violations of media rights.

Other offenders mentioned in the report include the Department of State Services (DSS); the military; paramilitary agencies; and elected officials at the federal and state level.

MRA reported at least 69 incidents involving journalists carrying out their work that included arbitrary arrests, unlawful detentions, physical assaults, threats to life, raids on journalists’ offices, kidnappings, and other intimidation tactics.

“The report shows that journalists in Nigeria are increasingly under siege, not just from criminals and insurgents, but from the very state institutions meant to protect them,” said Ayode Longe, MRA’s Deputy Executive Director.

He described the trend as “a direct assault on democracy and the rule of law,” warning that it contradicts Nigeria’s constitutional and international commitments to protect press freedom and the public’s right to information.

Additionally the report stated, that the lack of investigation or prosecution of offenders has created an unspoken policy of impunity, broken trust in the institutions of governance, and led to self-censorship amongst journalists. MRA reminded the authorities that the protection of journalists is guaranteed under the Nigerian Constitution, Article 9 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights and Article 19 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.

The organization urged the Federal government to hold violators accountable, reform security and law enforcement agencies, and to cease the misuse of laws such as the Cybercrime Act to attack the press.

It also urged the National Assembly to pass a law that criminalises attacks on journalists and asked the National Judicial Council (NJC) to curb the abuse of court processes used to intimidate media professionals.
