Senator representing Kogi Central Senator Natasha Akpoti has alleged that her international passport has been withheld.

She alleged that she had been prevented from travelling.

The lawmaker made the allegation in a live Facebook broadcast on Tuesday morning.

According to her, “having completed the celebration of my second year, I decided to take a week off and my passport is being withheld again. The same thing happened.

“I have committed no offense and there is no order from the court to seize my passport and deny me traveling.

“The last time it happened, the officer in charge told us that the Senate President Godswill Akpabio instructed them to withhold my passport and prevent me from traveling”.

Public affairs commentator Mahdi Shehu has criticised the United States President Donald Trump over his recent comments about defending Christians in Nigeria, describing the statement as hypocritical.

In a post shared on X on Monday night, Shehu said Trump has failed to protect Christians in his own country, where gun violence claims hundreds of lives every week, yet he claims he wants to defend Christians in Nigeria from persecution.

“Trump is utterly incapable of saving 70 Christians killed daily right under his nose in the United States, yet claims he wants to defend Christians in Nigeria from persecution.

Quoting the Bible, Shehu wrote, “Physicians, heal thyself.”

According to him, documented data shows that 125 people in the US are killed through gun violence each day. 327 people are shot daily, 117 killed in the process with 210 surviving various degrees of gunshot injuries.

He also cited data from the Everytown Research Journal, noting that an average of 45,738 people are killed by gun violence in the U.S. every year, most of whom are Christians killed not by terrorists but by fellow citizens.

According to him, Trump has been misled into believing a one-sided narrative about Nigeria.

Kwara State Police Commissioner, Adekimi Ojo, has ordered a thorough investigation into alleged acts of extortion by some police officers of the command along Osi-Eruku highway in Kwara South Senatorial District of the state.

A statement by the spokesperson of the command, SP Adetoun Ejire Adeyemi, in Ilorin on Tuesday, said “the Command is aware of a video footage circulating on social media alleging that police officers on duty were involved in an act of extortion along Osi-Eruku road in Ekiti Local Government Area of Kwara State.

A new commander, Major General Warrah Idris, has taken over the leadership of Operation FANSAN YAMMA (OPFY) in Zamfara State.

According to a statement by the Media Information Officer of the operation, Captain David Adewusi, his appointment followed his redeployment from the Defence Department of Transformation and Innovation.

The change of command ceremony was held on Monday, at the Theatre Headquarters in Gusau, Zamfara State.

The outgoing Acting Theatre Commander, Air Vice Marshal Abubakar Abdullahi, thanked officers, soldiers, and civilian staff for their support during his tenure. 

He said the achievements recorded were made possible through teamwork and professionalism. Abdullahi urged them to give the same cooperation to his successor as he moves to his new role at the Nigerian Air Force Headquarters as Chief of Policy and Plans.

According to the statement, the ceremony featured the signing of handover notes as well as the symbolic presentation of the command flag.

The Kano State Government has assured that it will not abandon youths who have renounced thuggery, saying they possess talents that can benefit society if given the right support and guidance.

The state’s Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, gave the assurance during a ceremony organised to receive some youths who decided to quit violence and embrace peace.

Waiya said the government recognises that many of the youths involved in such activities have useful skills that can contribute to the development of the state once they are properly rehabilitated.

“These youths have talents that can be beneficial to society if they are supported and guided to live meaningful lives,” he said.

He explained that the government introduced an amnesty and rehabilitation programme known as Safe Corridor to help integrate repentant thugs back into the community and promote lasting peace in the state.

“Already, 1,654 youths have been enrolled in the Safe Corridor programme, and another 2,100 will soon be screened to join,” the commissioner added.

Waiya said after completing the process, the beneficiaries would be presented to the governor for empowerment support to help them become self-reliant.

He emphasised that the main goal of the initiative is to ensure that the youths lay down their weapons and contribute positively to peace and progress in Kano State.

A Nigerian activist living in the United States, Baba Adam, has called on President Bola Tinubu to respond firmly to what he described as a reckless and unprecedented military threat made by US President Donald Trump.

In an email sent on Sunday, Adam accused Trump of gunboat diplomacy and a breach of international law after the US leader warned that America could take military action against Nigeria over alleged attacks on Christians.

“We categorically reject this reckless display of gunboat diplomacy and urge immediate, resolute action to safeguard Nigeria’s sovereignty,” Adam said.

He urged the Tinubu administration to summon the US Ambassador to Nigeria and issue a strong protest against what he called interference in Nigeria’s internal affairs.

He added that Nigeria should not hesitate to cut diplomatic relations with the USA if necessary.

Adam also proposed that Nigeria take the issue to the United Nations Security Council by filing an urgent resolution defending its sovereignty.

He further suggested convening an emergency ECOWAS and African Union summit to declare that any attack on Nigeria would be seen as an attack on Africa.

He encouraged the National Assembly to pass a resolution condemning the alleged US threat and reaffirming Nigeria’s territorial integrity.

Adam also advised Tinubu to test the loyalty of Nigeria’s European allies.

He said, “You may want to activate your relationship with the French leadership, even though we think they are weak and cannot challenge the USA, but it is a good test to see if they are true friends of Nigeria,” he said.

Trump had earlier labelled Nigeria a Country of Particular Concern (CPC) after making unverified claims of a Christian genocide in the country.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare to take decisive action to end the ongoing strike by resident doctors and ensure their prompt return to work.

Minister of State for Health, Dr Iziaq Salako, disclosed this yesterday in Abuja while addressing journalists.

He said the President’s directive followed mounting public concern over the nationwide disruption of healthcare services.

Salako apologised to Nigerians affected by the strike and assured that the Federal Government was working tirelessly to restore normalcy in hospitals.

“Mr President has expressly directed that we must ensure resident doctors resume work without delay,” the minister stated.

According to him, the government has been in continuous dialogue with leaders of the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors, NARD, regarding 19 outstanding issues raised by the union.

He stated that the dispute originated from a circular issued by the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission, NSIWC, which created division among healthcare professionals.

It was gathered that the circular was later withdrawn to pave the way for a new Collective Bargaining Agreement, CBA, that includes the Nigerian Medical Association, NMA, National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives, NANNM, and the Joint Health Sector Unions, JOHESU.

Salako noted that the CBA committee had convened 12 meetings before talks were suspended due to disagreements over salary structures and the appointment of non-doctor health workers as consultants.

To bridge the divide, the ministry engaged a professor of industrial relations to mediate between the disputing unions, with an interim report already submitted to the government.

He revealed that the Tinubu administration recruited over 14,000 health workers in 2024 and plans to employ an additional 23,000 personnel across 78 federal health institutions within the year.

The minister also announced that the President approved an upward review of the retirement age for clinical health workers to 65 years and released N21.3 billion to offset outstanding arrears, with 60 percent already disbursed.

Salako appealed to the striking doctors and other unions to cooperate with the government in achieving lasting stability within the health sector, emphasising the importance of collaboration.

“The health sector operates as a team; no cadre can function effectively in isolation,” he said.
