A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim, says Nigerians generally reject foreign intervention in fighting insecurity.

Olawepo-Hashim stated this on Wednesday while responding to questions in an interview on Arise Television monitored by DAILY POST.

His comment is coming after US President Donald Trump threatened that he had asked the Defence Department to prepare for possible military action in Nigeria if the Nigerian government “continues to allow the killing of Christians”.

The PDP stalwart dismissed the issue to be America’s stance, but the federal government’s failure to ensure security and accountability.

He slammed the Nigerian government for failing to protect its citizens amid what he described as an alarming escalation of violence across the country.

“Ordinarily, Nigerians don’t like foreign intervention. But the major point we must not lose sight of is that this is about killings in staggering numbers in the country and failure of leadership to offer protection for the people — whether they are Muslims, Christians or animists,” he said.

Former special adviser to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Dr Hakeem Baba Ahmed, have expressed growing concern over President Bola Tinubu’s continued silence following the United States’ recent hard stance toward the country.

“If President Tinubu truly has competent advisers and understands the weight of leadership, he should have addressed the nation by now, This is not the time for ministers or aides to speak on his behalf. The President himself should calm the people, explain our position, and tell us what steps he intends to take.”

Baba Ahmed expressed his concern in a post on his verified Facebook account on Thursday.

He warned that Tinubu’s silence “makes the country appear weak, as though we have no voice or direction.”

Commenting on reports that the President might consider visiting the U.S., they said, “At this critical moment, Tinubu should not even think of travelling to America to meet Donald Trump. Doing so would only worsen Nigeria’s image. It would be like receiving a slap and then smiling in return.”

“Appoint Ambassadors or Remain Invisible”

He also faulted the administration’s failure to appoint ambassadors more than a year into office.

“We have said it over and over again, appoint ambassadors!” he stressed. “Right now, many countries barely engage with Nigeria because we lack official diplomatic representation. A country without ambassadors is practically invisible in global affairs.”

Baba Ahmed concluded with a direct message to the President: “If Tinubu truly listens to those who care about this nation, he must act now, appoint ambassadors, restore Nigeria’s diplomatic strength, and speak directly to the people he governs.”

The Deputy Senate President, Senator Barau I. Jibrin, has vowed that criminals will not be allowed to destroy communities in Kano North.

He assured residents that the area remains peaceful despite recent bandit threats.

Senator Barau, in a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ismail Mudashir, commended the swift response of security agencies in repelling bandits who attempted to attack parts of Shanono Local Government Area of Kano State.

He said troops of the Joint Task Force Operation MESA, under the command of the 3 Brigade of the Nigerian Army, acted on credible intelligence and successfully neutralised 19 bandits on November 1.

The operation, according to him, prevented what could have been a deadly assault on local communities.

“I commend the gallantry of the troops and other security personnel who bravely defended our people,” Senator Barau said. 

“We will not allow marauding criminals fleeing from military operations in neighbouring states to destabilise our peaceful communities.”

The lawmaker also expressed sadness over the deaths of two soldiers and a vigilante member who lost their lives during the operation. 

He prayed for the repose of their souls and comfort for their families.

While urging residents to remain calm and vigilant, Barau called on them to continue supporting security agencies by reporting suspicious movements or activities for prompt action.

The Kaduna State Commissioner for Information, Malam Ahmed Maiyaki says the state government offers bandits access to education, healthcare, and livelihood opportunities as part of efforts to end years of killings and kidnapping in the state.

He made the disclosure at a one-day workshop on Peace Journalism organised by the Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Kaduna state, in collaboration with the Global Peace Foundation Nigeria and the Ministry of Information, Kaduna state.

The initiative, tagged Kaduna Peace Model, according to Maiyaki, was a deliberate shift from confrontation to conversation, focusing on restoring humanity through dialogue and development instead of financial appeasement with a view of better understanding to end all forms of criminal activities in the state.

The commissioner said, “You cannot bomb peace into existence; you must build it with trust.”

He explained that the turning point came when leaders of the armed groups asked the government to reopen markets, schools, and healthcare centers that had been closed due to insecurity.

He further explained, “We agreed because these are basic human needs, not ransom payments. We didn’t give them a dime. What we gave was life back to communities for better understanding that was long abandoned.”

According to Maiyaki, between 2015 and 2023, Kaduna recorded 1,160 security incidents resulting in 4,876 deaths, with thousands kidnapped or displaced, saying that in 2021 alone, 1,192 people were killed and 3,348 abducted, forcing the closure of 142 schools and 192 health facilities.

He said that Kaduna was once declared a “red zone” by the international community, expressing delight that it is gradually reclaiming its image through a non-kinetic approach anchored on intelligence sharing, dialogue, and socio-economic inclusion – in partnership with the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA).

Through the joint ONSA–Kaduna Peace Committee, the commissioner explained that more than 500 captives were safely released via negotiations without any payment of ransom or resort to force.

Maiyaki said, “We are seeing trust where there was fear, and cooperation where there was hostility.”
