A good number of families in Afaha Atai, Ibesikpo Asutan Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, have been brought to their knees with the incidents of water borne diseases ravaging the community.
Over 500 households with more than 2,000 occupants have reported cases of waterborne diseases ranging from typhoid/malaria, cholera, dysentery, Hepatitis A, among others.
This was disclosed during the commissioning of solar powered borehole and free medical outreach organized by the National Association of Seadogs, NAS, also known as Pyrates Confraternity on Saturday.
Afaha Atai has long had challenges of unsafe drinking water and the spread of waterborne diseases.
Speaking during the outreas, Dr. Eshiet Ekanem, Medical Mate of Sancta Riviera Deck, said the team conducted a detailed scoping mission in Afaha Atai and its neighboring communities — Afaha Etim and Mbietebe — to determine their healthcare needs before the outreach.
He said they were alarmed with the rate of waterborne diseases in the community.
Ekanem said, “Our findings showed that water scarcity in this area has led to an increase in waterborne diseases. We came with a full stock of medications to treat common illnesses such as malaria, typhoid, and scabies.
“We also discovered that about 35 percent of the residents are elderly, with nearly a third of them aged 70 years and above, so we made provisions for ailments like arthritis, poor vision, and other age-related conditions.
“During our planning, we received information from the village head that over 9,000 people might turn up. Though not everyone will come, we prepared for at least 2,000 to 3,000 beneficiaries.”
Also speaking, the NAS Captain, Dr. Joseph Oteri, said the intervention was part of activities marking the association’s quarterly meeting in the state.
According to him, the decision to bring the outreach to Afaha Atai stemmed from the prevalence of waterborne and communicable diseases in the area.
“Each of our quarterly meetings is an opportunity to touch humanity in a tangible way. We usually select a list of communities for a scoping mission to assess disease prevalence and population. That helps us determine the quantity of drugs to purchase and the number of medical personnel to engage,” he said.
The Chairman of Ibesikpo Asutan Local Government Area, Evang. Edidiong Inyang, while commissioning the renovated solar-powered borehole, lauded the Seadogs for the gesture, describing it as a lifeline for residents who lack access to basic healthcare.
He admitted that the borehole was abandoned for a long time, forcing the people to depend on unsafe water sources.

Niger State Governor, Mohammed Bago, has expressed satisfaction over the turnout of voters for the local government council elections in the state.
The governor said the development is as a result of the people’s trust in the system.
Speaking shortly after casting his vote at his Tswashagirabba Polling Unit 010, Landzun Ward, Bida Local Government Area, Bago described the massive turnout as an indication of the acceptance of the system and the electoral process.
“This is an experience that will show the acceptance of democracy in Nigeria. The way the people came out here is unprecedented; even at the general elections, we didn’t have such number, so it means the populace trusted the system.
“We also appreciate President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for maintaining that sub-nationals conduct local government elections,” he said.
Bago urged voters in the state to continue to conduct themselves orderly and wait patiently for the results to be announced while wishing the candidates success.
Similarly, the Political Adviser to the Governor, Nma Kolo, in an interview with newsmen in Minna, attributed the large turnout of voters to the trust they have in the electioneering process.
“Whatever development you see in Niger State is not only for APC supporters, but for entire people of the state. The governor has been providing excellent leadership and does not segregate and that is why we are peace loving.
“So far the election has been peaceful in most parts of Niger State and the process has been seamless. Election should not be a life and death thing and we thank the people for their understanding,” the political aide said.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Adamu Abdullahi Elleman, after visiting some polling units within Minna metropolis such as Tunga, Maitumbi, Angwan-Sarki and Bosso, along with heads of other security agencies, expressed satisfaction with the conduct of the election.
“We want to express satisfaction with the conduct so far, except where few hitches were recorded in some areas,” he stated.
The CP disclosed that some arrests were made.

The local government elections in Niger State has commenced across the 25 councils with voters turning up at various poling centres.
During a visit by DAILY POST to Gidan Badidi Polling Unit as well as Dan Eya Polling Unit in Lapai local council, the electoral officials expressed satisfaction with the process.
The officials explained that the peaceful atmosphere recorded was due to sensitization and awareness campaign embarked upon by the stakeholders in the area.
The agents of All Progressives Congress, APC, Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and Social Democratic Party, SDP, in separate interviews stated that voting materials arrived at the polling units as early as 8:00 am.
They added that accreditation and voting commenced simultaneously.
Stakeholders expressed joy at the peaceful process while commending the state electoral commission for the early distribution of election materials.
However, in some poling centres in Minna, the state capital, some polling units witnessed early arrival of sensitive materials while others experienced delays.
It would be recalled that Governor Mohammed Bago had declared Thursday, 30th October, and Friday, 31st October, 2025, as public holidays ahead of the local council elections.
Bago encouraged the people to come out en masse to vote for candidates of their choice for the progress of Niger State.

President Bola Tinubu has rejected United States President Donald Trump’s designation of Nigeria as a country of particular concern over alleged religious persecution.
Trump, on Friday, designated Nigeria as a ‘country of particular concern’, expressing concerns over a purported genocide on Christians in Nigeria.
However, in a statement on Saturday, Tinubu insisted that Nigeria is a democracy governed by constitutional guarantees of religious liberty.
The statement read: “Nigeria stands firmly as a democracy governed by constitutional guarantees of religious liberty.
“Since 2023, our administration has maintained an open and active engagement with Christian and Muslim leaders alike and continues to address security challenges which affect citizens across faiths and regions.
“The characterisation of Nigeria as religiously intolerant does not reflect our national reality, nor does it take into consideration the consistent and sincere efforts of the government to safeguard freedom of religion and beliefs for all Nigerians.
“Religious freedom and tolerance have been a core tenet of our collective identity and shall always remain so. Nigeria opposes religious persecution and does not encourage it.

The traditional ruler of Ogwashi-Uku in Delta State, HRM Obi Ifechukwude Okonjo, has commended the people of the kingdom for demonstrating renewed unity and sense of commonality by turning out in unprecedented numbers during the just-concluded celebration of the community’s annual Ineh Festival, saying it was a testimonial of fledging harmony and peace in the land.
Obi Okonjo noted that it was the first time since 2007 that the people of Ogwashi-Uku would celebrate, without any division, a unified Ineh Festival peacefully and to do so harmoniously with the monarch.
“We thank God that for the first time since 2007 we didn’t have double calendar for the festival. And, we thank the people for their solidarity with the Obi”, he said.
He particularly thanked the people for coming out in their thousands aa tgey queued behind him when he led the jubilant procession on Thursday, the concluding day of the famous annual feast, which is similar to the Ofala Festival celebrated by the Igbo communities across the River Niger.
Speaking through his Personal Assistant, Prince Onyeama Okonjo, who briefed newsmen on Friday at the Palace of the Obi of Ogwashi-Uku, the royal father said that a section of the community had previously come up with another calender from the one issued by the Palace since 2007, suggestive of the extent of intra-community conflicts of the past.
On the protest to the Government House Asaba by somw aggrieved persons against his alleged high handedness, the monarch described the exercise as a charade, and not indicating that the Ogwashi-Uku people were not solidly behind their roual father.
Obi Okonjo said that it was ridiculous that a handful of persons would go on a protest to the state government at the same time that thousands of their kit-and-kin were dancing and celebrating with their king the succesful conclusion of a historic Ineh Festival in Ogwashi-Uku in nearly two decades.
He said that it was unfortunate that the masterminds of what he called “a failed protest clearlyrejectedby the people” were actually individuals “facing serious criminal trials in court” in connection with their alleged involvement in certain activities in and around Ogwashi-Uku.
The Palace and Obi-in-Council remains law-abiding and not ready to trade words with such individuals because they constituted an infinitesimal fraction of Ogwashi-Uku people at home and the Diaspora, who were desirous of sustainable peace and progress in their ancestral land, the Obi said.
According to him, the fact the organisers of the so-called protest had hired more than 15 buses to convey people to the Government House Asaba but could load “only a two buses eventually” with less than 30 people bore eloquent testimony that the people of Ogwashi-Uku had rejected the those who obviously want to make the kingdom crises-ridden and unmanageable.
Obi Okonjo underscored the fact that he, as the traditional father of Ogwashi-Uku people and custodian of the people’s customs and traditions, including the unique land tenure system, would not do anything to undermine the Commission if Enquiry instituted by the Delta State Government in 2024 to resolve around land disputes within Ogwashi-Uku and neighbouring communities.
The traditional ruler wondered whether the said protest to the Government House Asaba was pre-emptive of the state government’s Commission of Enquiry or an attempt by the organisers to influence the yet-to-be-released white paper on the outcome of the investigation.
The same individuals who had appealed to Obi Dr Okonjo to take urgent steps to address the issue of land-grabbing around the Ogwashi-Uku Polytechnic when he ascended the throne in 2019, were the same people who rose up against the monarch after going to court and securing a judgement that reaffirmed that he had right to manage Ogwashi-Uku land in line with its land tenure system, Prince Onyeama Okonjo lamented.
“They came up with several frivolous and nonsensical allegations against the Obi, like the chain that the Obi had demanded for permission from the palace for access to their ancestral farmlands. How ridiculous! Who does that?!
“I will provide you copies of the letter that the spokesperson for the protesters, Adigwe Eluemunor wrote to the Obi asking the Obi to urgently intervene in the labd issue behind the Ogwashi-Uku Polytechnic. So that you can see that the Obi acted on their request and eventually got the court judgement.
“Also, we shall provide you, if you want, copies of the judgement that affirms the Obi’s right over Ogwashi-Uku land, that nullified the letter that Chieftaincy wrote, and which prompted the (state) attorney-general to go to Court and said the Obi is the person who manages Ogwashi-Uku land, or he is in charge. And, there is an order of Perpetual Injunction restraining the government from (tampering) with this right to manage Ogwashi-Uku land.”
Thursday’s protest to the Government House Asaba was led by Osamor Patrick Izu, President-General of Ogwashi-Uku Development Association and Sunday Adigwe Eluemuno, General Secretary of the group.

The Delta State chapter of the Nigerian Association of Small and Medium Enterprises (NASME) has held its maiden edition of its annual state conference and exhibition 2025.
The annual conference and exhibition, themed “Leveraging on Technology for Business Growth and Expansion”, took place in Asaba, Delta State capital yesterday.
In her welcome address, the state chairman of NASME, Delta State, Lady Judith Nwachukwu, said that the choice of the theme could not have been more apt, especially with the advent of technological advancement and AI (Artificiall Intelligence) was fast becoming a major enabler of businesses.
She assured that NASME remained committed to ensuring that MSME members acquired the requisite technological skills and knowledge to sharpen their competence and innovative cutting edge in the new digital economy evolving globally.
The forum will help in enlightening and educating members and participants on the use of technology in the advancement of their businesses in the contemporary digital economic space, she assured.
Lady Nwachukwu said, “With this conference, NASME has placed on itself the responsibility of providing, promoting, and encouraging the growth of MSMSEs in our state and nation as we are conscious of the potency of our dream for a better tomorrow”.
She expressed appreciation to the Delta State Government and other corporate bodies that have shown faith in their vision and remained steadfast in partnering with NASME in its quest to build a functional and effective MSME in the state for the growth of a better Nigerian economy.
Nevertheless, she appealed to the Delta State Governor, Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, for support and for certain essential utilities to enable the association to move across the 25 local government areas seamlessly.
In his goodwill message, the Chief Adviser to Delta State Governor, Chief Ighoyota Amori, commended the organisers for the initiative, which is aimed at empowering NASME with the requisite knowledge and tools to thrive in today’s economy.
The initiative is in tandem with the M.O.R.E Agenda of the Oborevwori administration regarding “meaningful development, opportunity for all, realistic reform, and enhanced peace and security”, he said..
He noted that through the M.O.R.E agenda, the state was creating an enabling environment for business to grow, and Delta State is positioning itself to be a technology-driven economy where creativity meets opportunity.
“When technology is properly harnessed, it gives the small businesses the need to thrive beyond limits; hence our young entrepreneurs can compete globally, he said.
He urged participants to take advantage of the digital opportunity to build their businesses, saying the state governor “remains committed to supporting such progress and ready to partner, empower through digital exhibitions.
