Troops of the Nigerian Army have rescued 30 farmers abducted by bandits in Tudun Wada, Bena district of Danko-Wasagu Local Government Area, Kebbi State.

The development was disclosed by a security analyst, Bakastine, via his X handle on Saturday. According to Bakastine, the victims, who were kidnapped while working on their farms, were rescued unharmed after troops trailed the abductors into the forest.

“This afternoon, soldiers in Kebbi State have rescued 30 farmers abducted in Tudun Wada Bena district, Danko-Wasagu LGA. The victims were taken while working on their farms. Troops tracked the gunmen into the bush and freed all captives unharmed. Ops still ongoing,” the post read.

According to sources, the victims were released following the swift response of the troops, who engaged the bandits in a coordinated search-and-rescue operation.

Residents in the area commended the efforts of the security operatives, describing the rescue as a relief after weeks of tension over rising cases of abductions in parts of southern Kebbi.

Security operations are said to be ongoing in the general area to flush out the remaining suspects and restore lasting peace.

The Northern Elders Forum, NEF, and the National Political Consultative Group, NPCG, have declared plans to rally the entire northern region toward unity ahead of the 2027 general election.

The groups said the strategy will include the involvement of traditional rulers and religious leaders across the 19 northern states.

The Director-General of of NEF, Doknan Sheni, while speaking at the expanded meeting of the NPCG held in Abuja on Saturday, stated that the region must first address the factors both internal and external that have caused disunity in the north.

According to him, Northern leaders must work to restore the spirit of inclusiveness once championed by the late premier of the northern region, Ahmadu Bello.

“Unless sensitive identity issues are properly managed, the region, and by extension, Nigeria, may continue to slide into deeper ethno-religious divisions,” he warned.

Activist and commentator, Bello Galadanci, popularly known as Dan Bello, has faulted former U.S. President, Donald Trump’s decision to place Nigeria back on the list of “Countries of Particular Concern” (CPC) over alleged persecution of Christians.

Reacting in a post on X (formerly Twitter) titled “The CPC Hustle: How a Fake Genocide Became Capitol Hill’s Favorite ATM,” Bello said the claim of a “Christian genocide” in Nigeria is false and being used by some foreign groups to make money.

According to him, the narrative has become a business for some U.S.-based lobbyists and NGOs who exaggerate Nigeria’s security challenges to attract international donations and funding.

 “The pitch is simple: scream ‘genocide,’ wave a blurry video of bandits on motorbikes, and watch the dollars rain down,” he wrote.

Bello explained that while insecurity in Nigeria’s northern region is real, it affects everyone regardless of religion.

“Bandits kill farmers, farmers fight back. Muslims die. Christians die. Traditionalists die. The only pattern is poverty, not prophecy,” he stated.

He recalled that Trump had previously given Nigeria the same designation in 2020, but it was later lifted by President Joe Biden after U.S. reports found no evidence of religious genocide.

Bello alleged that some organizations continue to spread false stories about Nigeria to secure funding, using unverifiable reports and recycled videos.

He also accused some of turning religious freedom campaigns into personal profit ventures.

 “The real religion isn’t Christianity or Islam—it’s capitalism,” he wrote, describing the situation as a “hustle” that benefits foreign middlemen more than the real victims of violence.

The Nigerian government has also rejected Trump’s latest claim, insisting that the killings in parts of the country are acts of banditry, not religious persecution.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs recently stated that Nigeria’s security agencies have neutralized thousands of terrorists and will continue to restore peace across affected areas.

“Let’s be clear: Nigeria has problems. Boko Haram is evil. Herder-farmer clashes are deadly. Corruption eats aid. But turning a national crisis into a sectarian cash cow helps no one except the middlemen with American passports and Nigerian accents.The irony? The loudest voices screaming “genocide” have never buried a cousin in Maiduguri. They’re too busy burying the truth under donor decks. Their real religion isn’t Christianity or Islam—it’s capitalism. And their holy sacrament? The earmark.” Dan Bello emphasized. 

Bello’s post has attracted wide reactions online, with many Nigerians agreeing that Western narratives about the country often ignore the complex social and economic roots of the insecurity.

He concluded his piece by saying,”Call it what it is: not genocide. Just good old-fashioned greed, dressed up in a dashiki and a cross.No faith required. Just facts.”

The Kaduna Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arraigned a former Kaduna State government contractor, Bashir Bello Ibrahim, before the Federal High Court sitting in Kaduna over alleged N111 million fraud.

Ibrahim, who is the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Formal Act Legacy Limited, was docked before Justice A. M. Aikawa on a seven-count charge bordering on obtaining money by false pretence, advance fee fraud, and money laundering.

One of the counts reads:

“That you, Bashir Ibrahim Bello (being Managing Director of Formal Act Legacy Limited) and Formal Act Legacy Limited, sometime in July 2024 at Kaduna, within the jurisdiction of the Federal High Court of Nigeria, conspired between yourselves to commit a felony, to wit: obtaining the sum of N37,300,000 under false pretence, and you thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 8(a) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act No. 14 of 2006 and punishable under Section 1(3) of the same Act.”

Another charge accused him of conspiracy to commit money laundering, contrary to Section 21(a) of the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022, and punishable under Section 18(3) and (4) of the same law.

The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to all charges. Following his plea, prosecution counsel Fortune Amina I. Asemebo requested a trial date, while the defence counsel M. T. Mohammed moved a motion for the hearing of the bail application. The court, however, declined to hear the bail plea.

Justice Aikawa consequently ordered that the defendant be remanded in a Correctional Centre pending the determination of his bail application.

According to the EFCC, the case stemmed from a petition by a complainant who alleged that he was introduced to the defendant in 2024 by three individuals — Josephine Washima, Mamuda Nyelong, and Nalara Tanimu — who claimed to be contract facilitators.

The trio allegedly convinced the petitioner that Ibrahim could award him contracts for the construction of solar-powered boreholes across the North-East region in his purported capacity as a “United Nations Sub-African Regional Coordinator.”

The petitioner reportedly paid N37.3 million as a facilitation fee into Washima’s bank account and was issued five fake contract award letters for the drilling of 20 solar-powered boreholes.

He later executed one slot of the supposed contract, comprising four boreholes in Karin Madaki, Bauchi State, but was never paid. Upon discovering that the contracts were fictitious, he lodged a formal petition to the EFCC, leading to Ibrahim’s arrest and arraignment.

The people of Faruruwa and nearby communities in Shanono Local Government Area of Kano State say they are living in fear as bandits intensify attacks in the area.

The Chairman of the Security Committee for the affected communities, Alhaji Yahaya Umar Bagobiri, raised the alarm in Kano on Saturday.

He said despite the presence of security personnel in the area, “bandits are still attacking, killing, and abducting people and carting away their valuables.”

Speaking through Prof. M. D. Mukhtar, Bagobiri explained that the bandits enter from neighbouring Katsina State through a border route in Tsanyawa Local Government Area. He said they shifted their operations into Kano after signing a peace accord with the Katsina State Government.

“We appreciate the deployment of security personnel by the Federal Government, but the exercise has not stopped the security breach, as the bandits are still terrorizing our communities,” he said.

Bagobiri noted that many people had fled their homes to Kano city and other safer areas.

“We are afraid that unless the banditry is addressed, the terrorists will escalate their attacks to other Local Government Areas, including Bichi, and from there, they may reach Kano, the State Capital,” he warned.

He appealed to President Bola Tinubu to work with the new Service Chiefs to “re-strategize and defeat the bandits” so that peace and order can return.

Bagobiri also called on Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to cooperate with President Tinubu and support security agencies tackling the crisis.

He further urged the Kano and Katsina State Governments to jointly secure the border areas where the bandits are sneaking into Kano.
