Independence Day: Adeleke grants amnesty to 36 convicts
Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has granted amnesty to 36 convicts serving sentences at the Nigerian Correctional Service centres in Ilesa and Ile-Ife to commemorate Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary.
The announcement was made on Wednesday in a statement issued by the Governor’s spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed in Osogbo.
The statement said, “Governor Adeleke exercised the powers conferred on him under Section 212 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (1999 as amended), following the recommendations of the State Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy.
“In a proclamation dated September 24, 2025, and issued under his hand and the Public Seal of Osun State, the Governor extended his mercy to the convicts, officially remitting the remainder of their sentences.
“WHEREAS, the Governor of Osun State of Nigeria has granted amnesty to the convicted persons listed and attached hereto, who are subject to the jurisdiction of Osun State,” the document read in part.
“NOW KNOW YE THAT I, Senator (Dr.) Ademola Jackson Nurudeen Adeleke, the Governor of Osun State of Nigeria, in exercise of the powers conferred upon me by Paragraph (a) Subsection (1) of Section 212 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended), and acting in accordance with the Advisory Council of State designated under Subsection (2) of the said Section, am graciously pleased to extend my mercy to the said thirty-six (36) convicts,” the statement added.
Governor Adeleke stated that by this act, he had remitted and released all penalties, punishments, and consequences arising from the convictions of the beneficiaries.
The proclamation also instructed relevant authorities to recognise the amnesty, declaring it as a sufficient warrant under the state’s seal and authority.
The list of beneficiaries included 29 inmates from the Ilesa Correctional Centre and seven from the Ile-Ife Correctional Centre.
Those released from the Ilesa facility included; “Kehinde Ganiyu, Isiaka Mohammed, Oluwatosin Femi, Adebisi Adeniyi, Rotimi Paul, Oyewole Sunday, Ojo Adewale, and Tajudeen Ridwan.
Other beneficiaries were, “Jokotola Quadri, Akinola Taofeek, Onibukun Adebisi, Azeez Afeez, Abdulgafar Quadri, Udoh Monday O., Babawale Saheed, Olasunkanmi Wasiu, Adetoro Toheeb, Mudashiru Lawal, Ismaila Wahab, Yinka Oyeniyi, and Olaniyan Taofeek.”
Additional names included: “Sheu Mumini, Ololade Bashit, Musibau Abdulkareem, Jamiu Sulaeeb, Jeremiah Ayuba, Abimbola Samad, Oladeji Tosin, and Mathew Samuel.”
From the Ile-Ife Correctional Centre, the convicts who received amnesty were: “Yusuf Ola, Oyedeji Sunday, Ojo Olaoluwa, Ogunola Rafiu, Ayomide Amos, Usman Adefisan, and Adedigba Abiodun.”
DAILY POST gathered that most of the pardoned inmates were convicted for minor offences, including stealing and conspiracy, and had reportedly served substantial portions of their prison terms.
Speaking on the decision, Governor Adeleke said the amnesty symbolised compassion, justice, and renewal.
“As a government of the people, we remain committed to upholding justice while extending mercy to deserving citizens. This amnesty is not only a gesture of freedom but also a call for true rehabilitation, reintegration, and a fresh start for these individuals,” the Governor stated.
He added that the move was intended to promote reformation and social reintegration of ex-convicts as productive members of society.

FRSC also denied imposing arbitrary fines on offenders or acting outside its constitutional jurisdiction.
A statement signed by J.K. Igbonekwu, the Sector Public Education Officer of Abia State Sector Command, described the report as a baseless falsehood against the FRSC.
The statement described the report as a deliberate attempt to tarnish the image of the Corps and undermine its constitutionally backed and legally constituted Mobile Court sitting in Ubakala, Abia State.
FRSC explained that every case heard at Ubakala Mobile Court followed due legal procedures where offenders were informed of their rights, had their charges clearly read out to them and offered the opportunity to be heard before decisions were taken.
It dismissed the claims that the Mobile Court in Ubakala was solely manned by FRSC, saying that it is legally composed of a Presiding Magistrate duly assigned by the Abia State judiciary, Court Clerk, prosecuting legal officer representing the Corps, FRSC law enforcement officers, Marshalls, with Police maintaining order.
The FRSC which said that the people may be misled and significant gains made in road safety enforcement across the nation eroded by the publication, insisted that there are video evidence including attendance, logs, judicial records and video documentations that proved the allegations otherwise.
The Corps said it would be exploring a legal option to redress the publication and its named sponsors.

A former member of the House of Representatives for Warri federal constituency, Hon. Temi Harriman, has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to adhere strictly to the law establishing it and discharge its duties with integrity.
She gave the charge last weekend during a public presentation of a book titled: ‘INEC Corrupt Practices: The Siamese Twins and Warri Federal Constituency’, co-authored by the Egogo of Warri Kingdom, Chief Robinson Ariyo, and Jolone Ikomi, both wof ho are lawyers.
Harriman stressed during the book launch that only strict compliance with the law can resolve the controversies trailing INEC’s recent ward and polling unit re-delineation.
According to him, “We are not merely talking about the immediate judgment,” she said, noting that: “INEC has been told to revisit this matter because the genesis of the problem must be addressed systematically, from the ground up. Respecting the law is the only way to sustain peace. Nigeria is not a jungle.”
Describing the book as a masterpiece and a must-read for all stakeholders, the ex-lawmaker recalled how her father, late Chief Ogedegbe Harriman, gave her a copy of the Willinks Report as a teenager, an encounter that deepened her understanding of the fears of Nigeria’s micro-minorities.
She insisted that for the country to function effectively, institutions such as INEC and the judiciary must operate with credibility and integrity.
Harriman urged INEC to shun what she described as “face-saving” and instead seize the opportunity to correct past missteps.
The former House of Representatives member commended the Warri Reclamation Thrust for its consistent advocacy, describing its efforts as “a job well done.”
The co-author of the book, Chief Robinson Ariyo, a lawyer, development expert, and spokesperson (Egogo) of Warri Kingdom, anchored his position on several court judgments surrounding the dispute.
He expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for keeping the issue under consideration, noting that although the president inherited the problem, he has demonstrated awareness of the agitation, particularly from the Itsekiri.
Ariyo traced the controversy to 1997, when an interlocutory order restrained INEC from creating 12 new wards in Warri South Local Government Area, an order the commission allegedly ignored.
He argued that the book exposes what he described as INEC’s “complacency,” which, he alleged ,,may have been influenced by inducement from vested interests.
Also speaking, the co-convener of the Warri Reclamation Trust, Bright Omaghomi, lamented that among the ethnic nationalities in Delta South, only the Itsekiri are without a senator representing them.
With just one representative in the legislature, he argued that meaningful progress on legislative issues had become almost impossible..
The event, which took place at the Imperial Banquet Hall of The Lilygate Hotel, Lekki, Lagos, a a drew distinguished audience comprising academics, legal luminaries, political figures, law students, and other stakeholders in Nigeria’s electoral process.
PANDEF representatives, civil society organisations,, and civil society actors were equally present.
Among dignitaries at the event were Gabriel Arubi, Chief Wilbert Benson, and Dr. Misan Afinotan.
However, the event was not without drama, as some INEC officials reportedly walked out at the height of allegations levelled against the commission.
The Warri federal constituency, comprising the Ijaw, Itsekiri, and Urhobo ethnic groups, has long been embroiled in a supremacy struggle, exacerbated by the disputed ward and polling unit delineation recently undertaken by INEC.

“Still, there is much to build on. The resilience and creativity of Nigerians at home and abroad have put our music, literature, technology, and entrepreneurship on the global map.
“Since 1999, we have sustained 26 years of uninterrupted democracy—an achievement rare on the continent. Our youth movements and civil society are vibrant and increasingly assertive.
“At 65, reflection alone is not enough. Nigeria must move from rhetoric to results. Public office must be a trust, not a privilege, and the country must strengthen independent institutions, enforce transparency in public spending, and wage an impartial fight against corruption.
“Oil cannot sustain 200 million people; investments in agriculture, manufacturing, technology, and renewable energy are critical to creating jobs and broadening the revenue base. Peace and justice are prerequisites for progress, requiring security reforms, community engagement, and swift justice to end impunity. Above all, gender, youth, and marginalized communities must be central to policy making. Genuine federalism and fairness in resource allocation will turn our diversity into strength.
“Nigeria has shown it can remain one. Now we must prove we can thrive together. The ultimate test of independence will be how well we transform our enormous potential into real security, equity, and prosperity for every Nigerian.”

As Nigeria marks its 65th Independence Anniversary, the Muslim Public Affairs Centre, MPAC, has urged the nation’s leaders and citizens to confront the country’s deepening security and governance challenges with “conscience and courage.”
In a statement titled “Nigeria at 65: A Call to Conscience and Courage,” MPAC lamented the widespread violence and insecurity plaguing several regions, highlighting the devastating toll of banditry and insurgency across states such as Zamfara, Kaduna, Niger, Katsina, Sokoto, Kebbi, Plateau, Borno, and most recently, Kwara.
“Independence is not merely a flag raised or an anthem sung; it is the living responsibility to unite our people, protect the sanctity of life, and build a nation where justice and dignity are not privileges but rights for all,” the statement read.
Citing the Qur’an (4:135) on the duty to uphold justice and bear witness to truth, MPAC warned that a nation that loses its sense of justice “loses its soul.” It emphasized that freedom from fear of violence, hunger, and impunity should now define true independence in Nigeria.
“This is not a time for platitudes. Leaders at all levels must rise above excuses and act with the urgency that life demands. Justice must not be delayed. Security must not be politicized. Mercy must not be selective,” MPAC declared.
Signed by Executive Chairman, Disu Kumor, the group called on Nigerian citizens to resist despair and continue to uphold unity, compassion, and shared responsibility. It also issued a sobering reminder to those in positions of power: “Power is a trust, and before God, every drop of innocent blood will demand an answer.”
While praying for national healing, peace, and guidance, MPAC urged Nigerians to recommit themselves to the values of justice, equity, and mutual respect envisioned by the country’s founding fathers.
