The Ebonyi State government has intensified its fight against substandard education, arresting 88 proprietors and teachers for operating unapproved and illegal schools across the state.

The arrests followed a sweeping inspection exercise by the Ministry of Education, which uncovered several institutions running without proper accreditation.

Many of the schools were found to lack qualified teachers, standard facilities, and approved curricula, prompting authorities to order their immediate closure.

Speaking to journalists in Abakaliki on Thursday, the Commissioner for Education (Primary and Secondary), Dr Donatus Illang, said the crackdown was necessary to safeguard the future of children in the state.

“We cannot compromise the future of our children,” Illang declared. “These schools pose a grave danger to the education system because they fail to meet the minimum requirements for learning.”

The commissioner explained that those arrested are currently under investigation, with legal action expected to follow. He issued a stern warning to other proprietors still flouting government regulations, stressing that the state would not hesitate to take similar steps against them.

Illang also urged parents to verify the accreditation status of schools before enrolling their wards, while calling on communities to report any suspected illegal learning centres.

To support genuine institutions, the state government has introduced measures such as teacher training and infrastructure assistance to help schools achieve compliance standards.

Reaffirming the administration’s commitment, the commissioner said every child in Ebonyi deserves access to quality education in a safe and well-regulated environment.

The Edo State Government has warned the management of the Museum of West African Arts, MOWAA, against encroaching on land belonging to the state-owned Edo Specialist Hospital, ESH.

DAILY POST reports that the Deputy Governor of the state, Dennis Idahosa, issued the warning on Thursday during a visit to the MOWAA site in Benin City.

He, however, urged the museum’s management to adhere strictly to the laid-down coordinates.

The deputy governor, who reaffirmed the state government’s stance on the boundary demarcation between the Edo Specialist Hospital and MOWAA, expressed displeasure over the museum’s alleged encroachment despite earlier directives.

He said the State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, had mandated him to ensure compliance with the demarcation lines.

According to him, “Governor Okpebholo has asked me to advise and also warn the MOWAA management to stick to the demarcation lines between the ESH and the MOWAA institution.

“A few weeks ago, we were here to demarcate the boundary between MOWAA and the ESH. Apparently, the MOWAA management decided to encroach on the land given to ESH.

“We came to let them know that the Edo State Government is firm on it, and we have given them the right coordinates. We have also sealed the part that belongs to the ESH, so that MOWAA can no longer encroach.

“This is not a witchhunt. The governor is fair enough to allow MOWAA to continue with whatever we met on the ground. He has not encroached or done anything contrary to the law. Hence, they should also stick to and abide by the law.”

Idahosa, who maintained that the government’s priority remains the security and health of Edo people, noted that compliance with lawful boundaries is in the interest of both institutions.

In her remarks, the Chief Medical Director of the Specialist Hospital, Dr Anthonia Njoku, commended Governor Okpebholo for protecting the hospital’s expansion interests.

DAILY POST also learnt that negotiations had been ongoing with the MOWAA management over the demarcation and that a temporary perimeter wall had already been erected in the meantime.

Anambra State governor, Prof. Charles Chukwuma Soludo, has empowered 8,300 youths with N3.5 billion in grants through his administration’s digital skills programme, One-Youth-Two-Skills Plus, during their graduation and certification ceremony.

The funds were disbursed to the graduands at the event, which took place at the International Convention Centre, Awka, with beneficiaries drawn from Anambra and beyond.

The governor stated that the innovation scheme, launched in October 2022, aligns with his promise to make 1,000 youths in the state millionaires annually.

Governor Soludo explained that, to ensure the success of the programme, his government has set aside funds through the Anambra Small Business Agency to provide loans to interested participants.

The State Commissioner for Youth Development, Patrick Aghamba, commended the governor’s efforts in actualising the project and highlighted its transformational impact.

Similarly, the chairman of the scheme, Professor Chinedu Onyeizugbe, reported a 48 per cent increase in participation and recommended the programme as a model for scholars and Anambra youths.

The first cohort in 2023 empowered 5,000 youths with N2 billion, with over 1,000 of them now running successful ventures. While eulogising Soludo for the laudable initiative, some beneficiaries testified that the training and grants had enabled them to become employers of labour.

The training programmes for innovation in Anambra under the governor’s administration include the One-Youth-Two-Skills programme, Code Anambra, a training scheme for skills acquisition, and the One Million Digital Tribe for digital training. Graduates of the various schemes were rewarded with employment opportunities and laptops to enhance their skills.

Recently, the Anambra State Executive Council, ANSEC, approved additional training and a code of conduct for the state’s law enforcement agents to enhance performance and promote a liveable homeland.

According to the State Commissioner for Information, Law Mefor, this forms part of Governor Soludo’s transformation of vital sectors of the state, adding that the training will improve the effectiveness of law enforcement agents in their operations.
