Garba Shehu, media aide to the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, has urged ex-President Goodluck Jonathan to present a better narrative that could persuade Nigerians to vote for him in 2027.

Shehu said Jonathan’s remark was an attempt to “rewrite history” ahead of the 2027 presidential elections.

He was reacting to Jonathan’s claim that Boko Haram once nominated Buhari as their negotiator with the Federal Government.

Jonathan made the disclosure while speaking at the public presentation of Scars, a book authored by former Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Lucky Irabor (retd.), in Abuja.

The former president said the insurgents named Buhari after his then administration set up several committees to explore dialogue with the group.

Dismissing Jonathan’s claim, Shehu said Jonathan’s government was responsible for worsening insecurity at the time.

In a statement he signed, Shehu recalled how the PDP was accused of sponsoring a political wing of Boko Haram.

“To win in 2027, Dr Jonathan should look for a better story to tell Nigerians,” Shehu said.

The Bauchi State Government’s Committee on the Creation of Additional Emirates, Chiefdoms and Districts has recommended the establishment of 13 new emirates, two chiefdoms and 113 districts across the state.

The recommendations were contained in a report submitted on Friday to Governor Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed at the Government House, Bauchi, by the committee chairman, Hamza Koshe Akuyam.

Akuyam explained that the proposals were drawn from over 196 memoranda received from communities — 17 seeking new emirates, 166 for districts, and others for chiefdoms.

He said the committee assessed the requests based on historical, cultural and administrative justifications, with the goal of promoting justice, inclusiveness and peaceful coexistence.

“The Committee is hereby recommending the creation of thirteen additional emirates, two chiefdoms, and 111 districts across Bauchi State,” Akuyam stated, noting that only the most deserving cases were selected from more than 100 petitions.

Governor Mohammed commended the committee’s work, describing it as a “transparent and painstaking exercise.” He said the reforms aligned with his administration’s vision to “unbundle Bauchi” for more effective governance, address ungoverned spaces and give communities a greater sense of belonging.

While acknowledging that the process might be unsettling for some traditional rulers, the governor stressed that such reforms were not unique to Bauchi, citing similar experiences elsewhere in Nigeria and beyond.

He assured stakeholders that implementation would be fair and balanced, preserving the dignity of existing institutions while expanding leadership opportunities.

The governor also pledged to forward the report to the State House of Assembly “directly and intact” for legislative action.

Mohammed urged lawmakers to act swiftly, devoid of political, ethnic or religious bias, and to prioritise the collective interest of the people.

The committee, inaugurated on July 4, 2025, was tasked with reviewing community requests and making recommendations to ensure inclusiveness, justice, equity and peaceful coexistence in the state.

Abia State governor, Alex Otti, has said that the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu, will soon regain his freedom.

Otti expressed the confidence on Friday during a one-day official visit to the state by President Bola Tinubu, who was represented by the Minister of Works, Dave Umahi.

“I can assure you that I am engaging with Mr President. He is favourably disposed to it, and I am sure that in no distant future, Nnamdi Kanu will regain his freedom,” Otti said.

He stressed his long-standing relationship with Tinubu, describing the president as a man of his word.

“Mr President and I have been friends for decades. Whatever he wants to do, he will tell you, and if he will not, he will say so. Having made promises, I am sure he will keep them,” he noted.

Speaking on behalf of President Tinubu, the Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, urged residents of the South-East to remain united and peaceful.

“On Friday morning, when I set out from Ajah to Isaac John in Ikeja, Google Maps first indicated the journey would last two and a half hours. But in a flash, it showed me an alternative route that will last just 70 minutes.

“I took the option and found myself on the Coastal Road. In less than 25 minutes, we arrived at the Ahmadu Bello end of the road.

“Except for the traffic snarl at the MRS fuel station caused by motorists queuing for Dangote petrol, the journey to Ikeja was smooth sailing.

“We arrived in Ikeja in a record 65 minutes on an usually traffic-busy Friday. Blessed be the visioner and dreamer, and blessed be the contractors for the quality work on the road. NB: The Coastal Road is not fully open to traffic.”

Chief of Defence Staff, CDS, General Christopher Musa, has called on Nigerians to unite in order to defeat insurgency and insecurity.

He stated that military action alone could not resolve the Boko Haram crisis, urging Nigerians to embrace peace and nationhood.

“For us as a nation to move forward, we must look at this faithfully, truthfully and clearly in order to find solutions. It is not only a military solution. From my experience, the military solution is just 25 to 30 per cent,” he said.

While drawing parallels from other countries, the Defence Chief cited Singapore as an example of resilience, adding that unity is crucial to overcoming the insurgency.

“As long as we don’t love ourselves as Nigerians, and we don’t look at ourselves as our brother’s keepers, this will continue. If we want this to end, we must learn to live together as brothers and sisters. It is not magic; it must be deliberate.

“Countries have evolved over time because they looked at their challenges and resolved to overcome them. Singapore, with all the challenges it had, stood and said: It’s either we stand and die, or we work and develop.’ They have worked, and they have developed,” Musa said.
