Former President Olusegun Obasanjo says the Boko Haram insurgency has become a part of daily life for Nigerians.
Obasanjo stated this on Friday in Abuja at the public presentation of ‘Scars: Nigeria’s Journey and the Boko Haram Conundrum’, a book authored by former Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Lucky Irabor (retd).
He urged Nigerians to confront the menace with deeper questioning and stronger resolve.
“Boko Haram is now virtually becoming part of our life. Should we accept that? If we should not accept it, what should we do?
“How much do we know? Even from the other side, and from this side, have we been active enough? Have we been proactive enough?
“I think we have to ask ourselves the necessary questions to be able to deal with this thing that is now becoming a monster within our country,” he said.
Present at the event were former President Goodluck Jonathan, service chiefs, former and serving governors, and clerics, among others.

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has described the Chibok girls abduction as a scar that will remain with him till death.
Looking back to the 2014 abduction of 276 schoolgirls from Chibok in Borno State, Jonathan said the incident left an indelible mark and will continue to haunt him.
The former President spoke during the public presentation of ‘SCARS: Nigeria’s Journey and the Boko Haram Conundrum’, a memoir by former Chief of Defence Staff, General Lucky Irabor, on Friday.
He commended the former CDS, stressing that he was “a soldier who stood for truth and never played politics with security”.
“The title of this book is quite interesting. One of the major scars on my government is the Chibok Girls.
“As Bishop Kukah said, no plastic or cosmetic surgeon can remove it. It is a scar I will die with,” Jonathan added.
The abduction of the schoolgirls sparked a global outrage, leading to the #BringBackOurGirls campaign.

The Chief Whip of the House of Representatives, Usman Bello Kumo, has commended President Bola Tinubu for his various interventions in healthcare and education infrastructure in Gombe State.
Kumo hailed the First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu for her enduring commitment to humanitarian services through her Renewed Hope Initiatives.
The member representing Akko Federal Constituency said “the numerous federal interventions across the north east, especially in Gombe State, are indicative of the Tinubu-led All Progressives Congress (APC) government efforts to meet the yearnings and aspirations of the people.
Rep. Kumo expressed delight at the commissioning of the newly upgraded Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Kumo on Thursday, noting that the wellbeing of any nation is proportionate to the health and wellbeing of its people.
The Reps Whip said Gombe remains a stronghold of the APC and pledged continued support for the President’s administration, assuring of the people’s readiness to back his re-election bid in 2027 to consolidate ongoing gains.
“It is also important to tell the story of the giant strides of our governor who without question remains one of the best performing in Nigeria. The records are there, in case you are in doubt,” Mr. Kumo said.
The First Lady, Mrs Tinubu, alongside Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, CON, and the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Ali Pate, commissioned the newly upgraded Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Kumo.
In Kumo, the First Lady received a rousing welcome as residents, youths, trade groups and students trooped out in their numbers, lining the streets to celebrate the historic commissioning.
In her remarks, Senator Tinubu lauded the Gombe State Government for its massive investment in healthcare, which laid the foundation for the hospital’s upgrade from a general hospital into a world-class Federal Medical Centre.
“This facility is a clear demonstration of what visionary leadership can achieve. It will significantly improve access to quality healthcare services and stands as a testament to the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu,” the First Lady noted.
She expressed optimism that Gombe would sustain its trajectory of progress and reaffirmed her commitment to amplifying the voices of the people at the national level.
“I believe Governor Inuwa Yahaya, who has his people at heart, will continue to support our initiatives for the betterment of Nigerians, especially those at the grassroots,” she said.
The First Lady further stressed the importance of traditional institutions in national development, calling on religious, traditional, and community leaders to partner with government in sustaining peace and driving grassroots growth.
Earlier, Senator Tinubu paid homage to the Emir of Akko, Alhaji Umar Muhammad Atiku, at his palace in Kumo. In recognition of her contributions to humanity and the developmental strides brought by the Tinubu administration to Akko, Gombe, and Nigeria, the Emir conferred on her the revered traditional title of “Sarauniyar Yakin Akko.”
The Emir described the commissioning of the FMC as a historic milestone that opens a new chapter in healthcare delivery for the people of Gombe State.

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Dr. George Agbakahi has concluded that ascendency to the presidency of the country by Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the time he did saved the nation’s economy and democracy from total collapse.
Agbakahi, who is the South East leader of Tinubu Support Organization and member of 2023 Presidential Campaign Council (PCC) Media and Publicity Directorate, made the assertion during a Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) current affairs programme on Thursday, tagged “Nigeria Today”, to mark the nation’s 65th Independence Anniversary, monitored in Abuja by our reporter.
While x-raying the nation’s democratic journey so far, the APC Chieftain acknowledged the turbulent civil war, the disruptive military regimes and the return to democracy since 1999 as well as the attendant economic challenges since then.
He described the Independence Day speech of President Tinubu as “compelling and inspiring especially as he acknowledged the role the founding fathers played in Nigerian history particularly during the independence era; people like Sir Ahmadu Bello, Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, Obafemi Awolowo, Tafawa Balewa and so on and so forth.”
The APC chieftain stated that the founding fathers played a huge role in building the country before the civil war between 1967 to 1970 after which there was a long period of military dictatorship which however ended in 1979 and came back again in 1984 before the nation came to democracy in 1999 that was the Fourth Republic.
Agbakahi stated that the nation’s economy and by extension democracy was heading to the doom when President Tinubu came on board in 2023 and introduced far-reaching policies and programmes to halt the downward slide.
“Since President Bola Ahmed Tinubu came into office barely two years ago, I believe he has done a whole lot to improve the wellbeing of Nigerians.
“He indicated from the very beginning that it was not going to be easy, particularly when he extricated the fuel subsidy and unified the foreign exchange rate. He indicated that it wasn’t going to be easy.
“However, in the past year things are changing, things are getting better. We all know that inflation has come down considerably to 20.12 percent.
“We also know that foreign reserve has gone up considerably to about $42.3 billion dollars. A lot has been done; there has been a lot of internally generated revenue that goes to the FIRS.
“In 2024 they generated N21.6 trillion as opposed to below N11 trillion in 2023. Look at the Nigerian Custom Service who generated N6.1 trillion as opposed to about N3.2 trillion before President Tinubu came into office; the same thing with other internally generating agencies. So the president has done a whole lot.”
Agbakahi, however, stressed that like President Tinubu indicated in his speech, there was a lot to be done and Nigerians were hopeful that eventually the economy will start getting better and better.
Speaking about the state of the economy before the intervention of President Tinubu, Dr. Agbakahi stated that “The hallmark of this administration’s economic policy truly is the unification of the exchange rate and it is quite obvious that since 1999 all successive governments, they all knew that it was a bad policy having multiple exchange rate, it was a policy that was predicated on corruption.
“Everybody knew that; Obasanjo’s regime, Yar’Adua, Goodluck regime, they all knew that, even to the extent that a well known business man Femi Otedola made a commentary recently that about N2 trillion was corruptly spent on fuel subsidies…”
He stated that in the past the nation’s currency, the Naira, was fast losing value, even as it was being fluctuated by the Central Bank and not by market forces.
“Now we have the real thing, that’s why even though one Dollar is exchanging at N1500 or thereabout, it still has more weight than when it was N800 per Dollar.
“And that’s why you see there is a trade surplus in this country. Just this last September our trade surplus reached about N7.46 trillion, that’s a step in the right direction. Our GDP grew N4.32 percent, that’s a step in the right direction.
“Before President Tinubu came on board, crude oil production was below one million barrels per day, but now we are talking about 1.7 million barrels.
“So the government has done a whole lot and this is done through kinetic and non kinetic means; the Niger Delta area is becoming quiet that’s why we are able to produce as much oil during this administration unlike in the past.”
The APC Chieftain stressed the importance of Nigerians looking back at where the country was coming from before President Tinubu came on board.
“The economy was bleeding, he was able to enact very bold and tough decisions which has brought us to where we are today and he showed empathy acknowledging the pains of Nigerians.
“We are really getting to the point that things have started getting better and definitely I want to urge all Nigerians to search your conscience at this point in time and reach out to one another and rededicate ourselves anew to the democratic ideals of peace, tolerance, peace mutual respect to rule of law, let us come together and support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2027,” he appealed to Nigerians.

He spoke while flagging off the construction of the Transit Way, N2, connecting the Central Area to Wuse District with two bridges.
Wike said: “I told you that when you are doing your work, people may hate you. All those who hate us are using the road, all those who hate us will use the water, they will use the street light.
“So it’s an opportunity to improvise for them, you don’t need to worry yourselves, they are just looking for an opportunity to come closer to us and because we are very strict, the only way they can come closer to us is to blackmail us; unfortunately we don’t know the meaning, there is no blackmail in our dictionary.
“The only thing that we know in our dictionary is to work to the satisfaction of our people.”
The minister also threatened to facilitate the redeployment of the FCT Mandate Secretary on Security over his inability to provide him with updates on the construction of 12 police stations across the capital city.
Wike warned: “Director of Security, we have built not less than 12 police stations and up till now, you have not come to tell me how many are ready.
“The day I go and find out, that is the day that you will go to the Institute of Policy Studies so that you will allow another person to do the job.
“Being director is not to wear Agbada and black cap, your assignment is to see that you handover the police stations so that we have improved security.
“So my dear brothers and sisters, it has not been easy. This flag off will continue till the 20th of October and then from November we will start to commission some other projects which we think are very vital and will grow the economy of the FCT and improve the landscape of the FCT.”

Wike said, “We are going to start again the total rehabilitation of not less than 40 schools after this road projects and that will add to not less than 70 schools that are ongoing with almost 45 completed and well furnished.
“And I said we will begin to look into the issue of health. We believe those in charge of health must sit up to know that time waits for nobody, if you don’t know how to meet up, go and ask those who know how to meet up with the speed that I work with.
“Go and meet the ES of FCDA, go and meet the Coordinator of FCDA and they will tell you how to meet up with me because its very key, like I said, no sector will be left. By the directive of Mr President, every sector must be touched and its for those of you in charge to will kick start it and let us believe that you are serious.”

“We will have so many projects to show case in the third year of Mr President and I believe that this is one of them. We have said severally and would continue to say that there is no development in any city without good network of roads.
“When all the cities are linked with good road networks, then you talk about that city becoming a modern city, then you talk about development in that city.
“Road infrastructure attracts investment and we have bona fide investors from Dubai who want to build Abuja city walk.
“If the infrastructures are not there they won’t come, but because they saw the infrastructure revolution in Abuja, they said they would replicate Dubai city walk in what we will have as Abuja city walk,” the minister said.
