Otti urges FG to develop South East gas deposits, rail network
The Federal government has been urged to develop large natural gas reserves in the South East.
Governor Alex Otti of Abia State made the call in Aba on Friday, when some projects he executed in Aba and Umuahia were commissioned by David Umahi, the representative of President Bola Tinubu.
He said that natural gas has enormously become critical in the new global energy order, but regretted that the large deposits under the land in the South East are undeveloped.
He said that it would be to the advantage of the Nigerian economy for the gas deposits to be developed in ways that pose no threat to the ecosystem, promising that the Governors of the South East would support the Federal government to develop the fields.
He also called on the Federal government to develop a functional rail network that would connect the South East-East and South-South zones to other regions, saying that it would boost trade, investments and reduce migration pressures in urban areas outside the two regions.
Otti recommended that the rail lines should have “stations in all major agricultural and commercial towns along the corridor “.
He also called for optimization of sea ports close to South-East and South-South, adding that his administration is conducting a feasibility study to build a seaport at Obuaku area of Abia.
He further said that his administration is investing in infrastructure, power, health, ICT and others.

President Bola Tinubu has said Abia State and other parts of Nigeria are immensely benefitting from the removal of the fuel subsidy.
The President said the policy has enabled state governments to execute key development projects.
Tinubu stated this on Friday during a one-day official visit to Abia State on Friday, where he was represented by the Minister of Works, Dave Umahi.
DAILY POST recalls that the president ended Nigeria’s longstanding petrol subsidy with his now-famous declaration, “Subsidy is gone,” during his inauguration speech on May 29, 2023.
The move, however, drew criticism from some Nigerians, who argued that he failed to implement adequate measures to cushion the effects of the subsidy removal.
Speaking on the president’s behalf at the event, where several projects, including the newly remodeled Dr Michael Okpara Auditorium and completed road projects were commissioned, Umahi said Tinubu’s decision is beginning to yield positive results.
“The removal of the fuel subsidy is gaining momentum for projects, and we are beginning to see the benefits here in Abia State.
“The same progress is being experienced in other states across Nigeria. I am committed to working with your governor to ensure that Abia State fully reclaims its potential,” he said.

Kebbi State Government has approved the appointment of Sanusi Muhammad Toga as the new District Head of Sarkin Yamman Gwazange and announced the creation of four new villages in Argungu Local Government Area.
The development was confirmed in a statement issued on Friday by the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Garba Umar Dutsin-Mari, in Birnin Kebbi.
According to the statement, the decision followed a resolution by the Argungu Local Government Council in accordance with the Kebbi State Local Government Law of 2008.
The newly created villages include Sarkin Yamman, Magaji Bela, Ubandawakin Wali, and Darakwai.
Dutsin-Mari said the new district was carved out of the existing Baraje District to enhance administrative efficiency and promote grassroots governance.
He urged the new district head to carry out his duties with fairness and a commitment to peace and development within his area.

The Defence Headquarters has said that since President Bola Tinubu assumed office in May 2023, the military working under his renewed strategic direction has achieved significant milestones in degrading terrorist networks, disrupting criminal syndicates, and restoring civil authority across many volatile regions.
Director of Defence Media Operations, Major-General Markus Kangye, who stated this on Friday also revealed that within the period more than 5,000 insurgents and bandits have been neutralized across multiple theatres of operation, including the Northeast, Northwest, and North Central.
The DHQ also denied allegations that 2,630 persons were killed in Plateau State by terrorists/bandits in the last 2 years as well as displacement of 167 communities in Plateau State as concoction of falsehood.
Reacting to Amnesty International’s recent report making these allegations, DHQ dismissed it as ‘A bleak and generalized picture of national insecurity, which largely ignored the asymmetric and evolving nature of modern threats, especially those rooted in decades of socio-political and economic complexities”.
Kangye said the military in collaboration with local intelligence networks, successfully rescued over 1,200 abducted civilians, including women and children, many of whom were kidnapped in mass abduction incidents.
According to him, the deployment of Quick Response Forces, QRFs, Forward Operating Bases, and enhanced coordination with state governments and community leaders have improved civil-military relations with communities.
He stressed that in surveillance and air power enhancement, the NAF has conducted over 500 successful air interdictions, close air support among other operations while significantly degrading the movement and logistics capability of armed groups noting that the use of modern surveillance drones and night operations has improved tactical superiority and minimized civilian casualties.
He disclosed that military engineering corps have secured and rehabilitated key transportation and communication corridors previously vulnerable to attacks resulting in increased joint patrols along porous border regions with Cameroon, Niger, and Chad which has curtailed cross-border infiltration.
“The number of deaths quoted in the report does not reflect the actual situation in Plateau State.
“Following the reorganization of deployments and conduct of broad-spectrum subsidiary operations in Plateau State from July 2023, the State witnessed continuous improvement until the coordinated attacks in some communities in Bokkos and Bassa LGAs of Plateau State on 2 and 14 April 2025.
“The period covered in the press release did not record coordinated attacks on communities except for the Christmas Eve 2023 and the recent security breaches in Bokkos and Bassa LGAs of Plateau State,” he said.

Lagos State Police Command has launched investigations into two separate incidents captured in viral videos, one showing officers tear-gassing students in Alakuko and another involving a road accident in Ikorodu that left two people injured.
The command confirmed the development in a statement posted on its official X handle, @LagosPoliceNG, on Friday.
According to the statement, the Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, has directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department, SCID, to lead a comprehensive probe into both incidents.
Jimoh strongly condemned the conduct of the officers involved in the Alakuko incident, describing their actions as unprofessional.
He reiterated that the misuse of power and acts of overzealousness by police personnel would not be condoned under any circumstances.
The Commissioner also appealed to representatives of the victims affected by the Ikorodu accident to come forward with relevant information to aid the investigation and ensure justice is served.
The command assured members of the public that the investigation would be transparent and that any officer found culpable would face appropriate disciplinary measures.

The National agency for the prohibition of trafficking in persons (NAPTIP) has rescued eight women and arrested two suspects in Kano State during operation on a cross-border trafficking syndicate.
The Kano State Commander of NAPTIP, Abdullahi Babale confirmed the development in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria.
He said the victims, aged between 18 and 43, were intercepted on October 1 at Malam Aminu Kano International Airport as they attempted to travel to Saudi Arabia.
“Preliminary investigation revealed they were to be trafficked for labour exploitation by two Ghanaian nationals,” Babale said, revealing that six of the women held a one-way tickets. He added that while one of the suspects has been arrested, the other remains at large.
Babale also disclosed that the agency rescued two other women earlier this year who had been trafficked from Kano to Burkina Faso for sexual exploitation.
He assured that all suspects would be prosecuted after investigations are completed while the rescued women will undergo counselling and rehabilitation before being reunited with their families.
He urged parents to remain vigilant, stressing that traffickers often exploit economic hardship by luring victims with promises of jobs abroad.

The European Union Electoral Observer Mission says Nigeria may be running against time in the push to conduct a credible 2027 general elections.
This was as it called for urgent steps to fast track the ongoing electoral and constitutional reforms to make the next general election acceptable to all stakeholders and in tandem with the recommendations of both local and international observers who observed the 2023 general elections.
The EU team stated this while addressing a press conference on Friday in Abuja, stressing that the timely reforms in the constitution and election law were necessary to ensure voter confidence in the country’s electoral process.
The head of the follow-up EU Electoral Observer Mission, Barry Andrews, emphasized the need for the country to speed up the reforms, noting that only one out of the 23 recommendations to the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has been fully implemented.
The EU team found that while two recommendations have been partially implemented, eight are ongoing, three are too early to determine, and nine have not been implemented.
While commending the legislature for the amendment so far in the Electoral Act 2025 and the ongoing constitutional review process, Andrews noted that time was running out.
He stressed that the country’s resilience depends on reforms that citizens can believe in.
“So, the electoral observation mission final report in 2023 made 23 recommendations. 11 require legal changes and 12 are administrative in nature.
“The mission identified so far that one recommendation has been fully implemented. Two recommendations have been partially implemented,” he said.
