Nigeria’s Acting Ambassador to the United States, Samson Itegboje, has said that President Bola Tinubu inherited a “comatose economy.”

Itegboje made this statement at an award dinner at Nigeria House in New York to celebrate Nigeria’s 65th independence anniversary.

He stressed that Tinubu had not been lamenting over this.

“The president inherited a comatose economy, he inherited banditry.

” He inherited kidnapping, terrorism, herders and farmers clashes and all sorts of vices.

“He did not go into lamentation. He rolled up the sleeves and he went to work.

” The first thing he did was to take out the fuel subsidy. It was corruption-laden. He took it out,” he said.

According to him, the president scrapped the corruption-ridden foreign exchange regime, adding that this did not go down well with some.

The envoy acknowledged that some of the president’s actions had initial repercussions, noting prices of products went up and the citizens were badly hit.

He, however, said the measures were necessary in order to secure the future of the country, maintaining that after the initial rise in prices, they are beginning to normalise.

The meeting, which was held behind closed doors on Saturday at the Port Harcourt residence of elder statesman, Chief Ferdinand Alabraba, reportedly lasted until the early hours of Sunday.

Although details of the discussions were not disclosed, it is believed that both leaders are making efforts to sustain the peace accord brokered by President Bola Tinubu during the political crisis that led to the six-month emergency administration in the state.

Notably, loyalists of the governor were absent from the meeting, a pattern that has been observed in previous reconciliatory gatherings aimed at restoring peace in the state’s political space.

Those present at the meeting include Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Martin Amaewhule; Senators Barinada Mpigi, Magnus Abe, Wilson Ake, George Sekibo, and Olaka Nwogu; members of the House of Representatives, Felix Nwaeke (Tai/Oyigbo Federal Constituency) and Kelechi Nwogu (Etche/Omuma Federal Constituency); Deputy Speaker, Dumle Maol; and House Leader, Major Jack.

A concerned Igbo group, the Igbo National Union-Worldwide, INU-W, has flayed the Nigerian government for supporting the call for the political recognition of Palestinian State by the United Nations during the 80th UN General Assembly, UNGA’80 in New York.

The pressure group said the speech made by Vice President of Nigeria, Kashim Shettima, who stood in for President Bola Tinubu, at UNGA’80, was out of place, as several persons are languishing in prisons in Nigeria because of their civil agitations for self independence.

INU-W in a press release signed and made available to the media through its Admin Secretary, Mazi Austin-Mary Ndukwu, explained that the call was very belittling and uncalled for, given that Nigeria does not believe in self independence even though the clause for self determination is respectively embedded in the UN and Nigeria constitutions.

“Among issues raised were for Africa to have a slot as a permanent member of the Security Council and also the recognition of Palestine as an independent States. It is on these two vexing issues that Igbo National Union World-wide is worried about.

“INU-W worries stemmed from the high rate of insecurity bedeviling the continent of Africa and Nigeria in particular. Wars, terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and abduction for ransom, among others, cannot guarantee a seat for Africa, specifically Nigeria at the UN.” the release stated.

The Admin Secretary of the group asserted that Nigeria with the highest rate of insecurity, criminality and corruption prevalent in almost all the 36 states and FCT, does not have the moral justification and capacity to be admitted into the Security Council as a permanent member.

“Charity they say, begins at home. Nigeria must first fix the insecurity issues in her county which have taken the lives of a larger chunk of her population and wanton destruction of property and public infrastructure.

“The most significant and symbolic item presented by Nigeria at the meeting was her tacit recognition of a Palestine States. Therefore, the question being asked by Igbo National Union World-wide is; did Nigeria take such a step on the basis that it saw other countries doing it or that it suddenly recognized the importance of freedom for indigenous peoples?” the group asked.

Ndukwu described the call for recognition of Palestinian State as an individual decision taken by the Vice President in solidarity with his Muslim brothers?

He hinted that it is a game of double standard for Nigeria to wake up overnight and begin championing the freedom of indigenous peoples outside Africa while several groups agitating for self determination are made to languish in various correctional facilities and police cells in the country.

The group advised Tinibu’s led administration to purge itself from what they described as hypocrisy by releasing all prisoners of conscience.

The UN Deputy Secretary-General, Amina Mohammed, says she has not heard President Bola Tinubu complain about the challenges he inherited from his predecessor when he assumed office as president.

Mohammed stated this at an award dinner at Nigeria House in New York to celebrate Nigeria’s 65th independence anniversary and the Independence Day Parade and Carnival.

The Nigerian-born UN deputy chief also said that President Tinubu fought hard to get to that seat, even though he said it was his turn.

According to her, so far, Tinubu is the president of Nigeria, adding that it was God that put him on the seat.

“But he also told us that he wasn’t going to complain about what he got. I have not heard him complain. People around him complain about what he inherited but he doesn’t.

“It is, therefore, incumbent upon us to get behind him and do the best we can for Nigeria. Except you’re trying to tell me that God made a mistake,” she said.

She, however, congratulated Nigeria and Nigerians on the 65th independence anniversary, saying that the future is bright for the country.

Mohammed called for concerted efforts to build the country and not pull it down, saying, “if we get into the pull- down syndrome, then who else is going to pull us up?

“What else are we telling our children? What else are we telling people that we want as our partners?

“If we are the first people to say that we’re no good, we’re not good enough, and I hope that we just stop doing that. This is because Nigerians are the hardest working, most ambitious, and proud people.”

The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, has charged corps members to see the service year as a civic responsibility and a call to nation-building.

Speaking during his address to corps members at the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp, Ede, Osun State, General Nafiu also charged the corps members to remain committed, dedicated, selfless and disciplined as they commence their service year to the nation.

He said, “You are primarily responsible for building and joining to build this nation and make it desirable. Because Nigeria belongs to us, we must serve it.”

The NYSC DG urged the corps members to disregard negative narratives circulating on social media about the country, reminding them of their role as educated citizens.

“Don’t follow the noise on social media that things are getting worse. You are all graduates, think critically,” he said.

He emphasised that the NYSC orientation exercise was designed to bring together young Nigerians from diverse backgrounds to foster unity and mutual understanding.

“The essence of the orientation exercise is to congregate the youths under the same condition to get acquainted with other cultures, people and experiences across the country in fulfillment of the NYSC dream to unite the country,” he said.

According to him, every Nigerian graduate passes through the NYSC to fulfill a national mandate, which remained a clarion call to service.

“It is a clarion call to service and to build a nation. It helps to pull out that leadership potential. It is our responsibility as youths to build and lead this nation.”

He charged the corps members to start in the front and learn leadership because it is about responsibility.

“You must use social media responsibility. For this one year jettison aluta. You are not politicians.

“Discipline in the NYSC is not just meted out. Be obedient, abide with the NYSC bylaw. Don’t travel without permission and don’t travel at nights. Take the issue of your personal security seriously. It pains the NYSC when we resume news of bad things happening to our corps members. Know your rights, your privileges and your limits,” he added.

Brigadier General Nafiu praised the inclusiveness of Nigerian society, maintaining that corps members would find hospitality across states.

“The beauty of Nigeria is that you’re welcomed everywhere. After the NYSC service year, it took the intervention of some parents to get their children back home. It is an enjoyable scheme,” he added.

He encouraged the corps members to feel at home in Osun State and to make meaningful contributions during their service.

“Here is where you should be now. Contribute your quota and write your name in gold,” he charged.

Highlighting the importance of the Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development, SAED, programme, he urged corps members to take the initiative seriously.

The DG warned corps members not to view the SAED activities as a waste of time.

“The whole essence of NYSC SAED programme is to give you two at the price of one. It makes you skillfully qualified at the end of the service year,” he explained.

“Don’t see SAED as time-wasting activities. You will need it. Reality is what you have now. There is a difference between promise and reality. Don’t cheat yourself by leaving at the end of one year with only your certificate of national service.”

He encouraged them to acquire skills even if they would not use them immediately and admonished the corps members to embrace financial literacy and cultivate a saving culture.

“Acquire skills even if you don’t need it immediately. NYSC had gone into partnership with several organisations to support corps members in skill acquisition.

“Be financially literate because the scheme would not afford to meet the needs of all corps members after service. These are days of little beginning. Don’t despise it,” he added.

In his welcome address, the Osun NYSC Coordinator, Agbor Ndoma Obim, expressed delight over the visit of the NYSC DG and assured him of the readiness of the corps members to serve Nigeria diligently.

Obim disclosed that a total of 2,500 corps members were registered in the camp, comprising 830 males and 807 females deployed to Osun State, and 427 males with 436 females dislodged to Lagos State.

He added that camp activities had commenced in full swing, with the camp clinic opened two days before the official commencement of the orientation course.

The Coordinator reaffirmed the commitment of the corps members to the ideals of the NYSC and said they were prepared to contribute to national development through the one-year mandatory service.
