Nigerian Army Urges Rivers to Complete Recruitment Slot

Amid the ongoing Nigerian Army recruitment exercise, citizens of Rivers State have been enjoined to enrol and complete their slot.

Making the appeal during a briefing at the Garrison 6 Division Nigerian Army, Bori Camp, Port Harcourt, yesterday, Brig. Gen. Patrick Alimihkena, chairman of Nigerian Army Recruitment Enlightenment/Sensitisation Campaign, disclosed that out of the 190 recruitment slots allocated to Rivers State, only 124 of her citizens had enrolled, leaving 66 slots vacant up till the time of the briefing.

Brig. Gen. Alimihkena, who is also the Director of Welfare, Army headquarters Department of Administration, assured fair-playing ground to all applicants, describing the ongoing online recruitment exercise as free, transparent and credible.

“We would not want the Rivers State slot not to be completed. There are 190 slots for Rivers State but only 124 have filled the online form. The army is an interesting place to be. There are a lot of opportunities in the army, a lot of amenities,” he said.

He dispelled the fear of insecurity in the country, especially in the north, rumoured to be the reason cited by most parents in the South-south and South-east region for withholding their children from joining the army, as uncalled for, adding that the recruitment was a group exercise, as no person would be singled out to be posted to any particular place to stay there forever.

Also speaking, Secretary of the Nigerian Army Recruitment Enlightenment/ Sensitisation Campaign, Lt. Colonel Ogbemudia Osawe, said the ongoing recruitment was an opportunity for youths in Rivers to better their lives, given the self-improvement opportunities the platform offers.

Dismissing the issues of god-fatherism and insecurity expressed in some quarters, Osawe, who said he was also from the South-south, assured that any applicant that passed the medical and fitness tests would be taken, explaining that even during the militancy era, most of them were posted to the South-south and yet they survived.

He therefore advised youths from the region to be positive and committed when serving their fatherland, adding that the grace that saw them through was still there for them.

A press statement by the recruitment sensitisation campaign team made available earlier to journalists in Port Harcourt, stated listed “job/career opportunities, enhanced regular pay allowances, opportunity to further one’s education, social integration with people from various tribes/religion, enhanced welfare/insurance services, housing, pension and gratuity,” as some of the benefits accruing to youths who join the Nigerian Army.

He accused the state Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, of undermining Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s constitutional role as the state’s Chief Security Officer.

Governor Yusuf had already declared that he had lost confidence in CP Bakori and demanded his removal after police officers and men refused to participate in the October 1 parade at Sani Abacha Stadium.

Reacting to the controversy, Maude said the Commissioner of Police disregarded the governor’s authority and left him exposed to security threats.

He stressed that police commissioners are expected to obey lawful directives from governors on matters of public order and safety, except where the president gives a contrary order.

The AG argued that Bakori failed in his responsibility to both the governor and the Inspector-General of Police during the parade. He referred to sections 214 and 215 of the Nigerian Constitution: while the police remain a single, centralized force under the IGP, governors also have powers to issue lawful directives to CPs in their states.

Maude noted that CPs often face “dual accountability” to both the IGP and governors, which sometimes causes conflict.

In this case, he said, Bakori’s absence from the national day parade amounted to sabotage and misconduct.

“This incident shows the unresolved constitutional issue about where a CP’s loyalty lies and how it affects governance, security, and federal balance in Nigeria,” he said.

According to him, by refusing the governor’s order without referring the matter to the president as the constitution allows, CP Bakori upset the balance between federal and state powers. Maude added that this justified Governor Yusuf’s protest and call for the commissioner’s removal.

South-east Urged to Define Own Digital, Economic Future to Guarantee Prosperity of Youths

A group, The Pivot Africa, has said that the South-east needs to define its digital and economic future in order to guarantee the prosperity of its young people.

The Executive Director of the group, Mr. Ifedy Ralph Eze, stated this during a pre-event press conference in Awka, Anambra State to announce the 2025 edition of the Pivot Conference, which comes up on October 18.

The Pivot Conference is an annual gathering of youths, who come together under the tutelage of established entrepreneurs, business persons and innovators, who teach, inspire youths and also empower them for the startup of their own businesses.

Eze while briefing journalists on the forthcoming conference, said the South-east needs to intentionally drive its story by championing growth through use of digital tools. He said most businesses today rely on digital tools for growth, and young business people in South-east need to take advantage of it.

He said, “Our people are not lacking in talent or creativity, but in platforms that connect them to opportunities, tools, and networks that can scale their ideas into prosperity.

“Young people need to leverage digital tools to advance their businesses and jobs. This year’s conference will showcase teachings and empowerment that can help young people upscale their businesses.

“The Pivot Conference will bring together business leaders who will tutor the young ones on how to succeed in their businesses. This will be the third year we are holding it, and is not just an event. It is a movement, a bold declaration that South-eastern Nigeria can and will define its own digital and economic future.”

He said this year’s conference with the theme: ‘Reimagine the South-east’, would have 5,000 participants, and would not just be a gathering, but a catalyst for transformation, as it would train entrepreneurs, spark collaborations, and give voice to a new generation of innovators.

“On October 18th, we will convene 5,000 participants — policy leaders, investors, entrepreneurs, educators, women in tech, grassroots innovators, and students.

NIPR Tasks Nigerians on Nation’s Greatness

The Nigeria Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) has tasked Nigerians on various challenges confronting the nation saying that Nigeria’s greatness lies on citizens.

The NIPR said at 65, Nigeria has come a long way, but the journey to greatness is still unfolding and requires the dedication of all citizens.

The Chairman of the NIPR. Ogun State Chapter, Mrs. Oluwaseun Boye, in her welcome address at the October 2025 Business Meeting of the state branch of the institute, held in Abeokuta, Ogun State capital, said the time is now for all Nigerians to put hands of the deck for her.

The meeting which has as its theme, ‘Nigeria at 65: Pathways for National Development and Economic Sustainability’, was attended by professionals and guests including a Member of House of Representatives representing Yewa North/Imeko Afon Federal Constituency. Hon. Gbenga Nasiru Isiaka and popularly called GNI.

While saying that the programme was specially organised to mark the 65th Independence of Nigeria, said the theme, was both a call to duty and a reminder that no sector, profession, or citizen can afford to stand aside.

She said, “As public relations professionals, our role is to shape narratives that build trust, promote unity, and inspire collective action.

“We must use our platforms to bridge divides, amplify truth, and galvanise every stakeholder toward nation-building.

“Nigeria’s greatness lies in the commitment of its people. If truly all hands are on deck, then a stronger, more prosperous Nigeria is not just possible it is inevitable, so I charge you all to join hands together to achieve a Nigeria of our dreams that we can all be proud of.

“At 65, we are called not only to reflect on our past but also to chart new pathways for the future of our beloved nation.

“Our them is both timely and challenging. It reminds us that the task of nation-building requires fresh thinking, renewed commitment, and deliberate actions from every sector, including public relations.

“As public relations practitioners, we are the custodians of perception, reputation, and trust. At 65, Nigeria needs us to do more: to uphold integrity and protect our reputation gate; to reset the national mindset by telling authentic, uplifting stories; and to be ambassadors of hope and progress wherever we find ourselves.

“Let us be reminded, we are not who they say we are; we are who we truly are. The world is already drawn to Nigeria, they watch our movies, admire our fashion, eat our food, dance to our music, and celebrate our creativity. These are powerful assets of nation branding and soft power that we must leverage.

“It is time to change the narrative. Enough of the bad news. Enough of saying “Nigeria happened to us.” From today, let Nigeria happen to us in positive ways.”

Speaking on the theme at the event in an address at the event, the House of Representatives member said despite daunting challenges, Nigeria has recorded tangible progress since independence in areas of education, stable democratic rule, improved revenue from non – oil export, digital economy among others.

‎The lawmaker, however, said that the nation still has a long way to go to catch up with countries like Singapore and Malaysia that were at par with Nigeria at some stage and identified leadership and followership challenges, policy inconsistency, poor population census data, lack of continuity of programme due to change in government as some of the factors stymieing the nation’s efforts at realising her true potentials 65 years after.

He said the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has done well to reposition the nation’s economy to the path of recovery and progress.

‎Isiaka, who revealed that he agreed 100 per cent with the government when it declared recently that “the economy has turned the corner,” said President Tinubu

should come back for the second term in 2027 so that the good things being championed by the administration could be completed.

‎He said that in the last two years inflation, interest rate, foreign reserve issues and instability in exchange rate were some of the things bedevilling the country but said as of today, they have all been taken care of through audacious policy reforms.

He also scored the present administration at the centre high in the areas of policy continuity, especially the project 2050 of Nigeria which it inherited from the immediate past administration.

The Mediation Training Institute (MTI-Nigeria) has said there are several Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) organisations that have not been registered with the Centre for Management Development (CMD) and yet are operating in full terms.

It also stated that any and every organisation that claims to be “Chartered” but has not sent a Bill to the National Assembly to be passed by both Houses and accompanied by Presidential Assent is speculative, deceptive and misleading the public.

President of the Mediation Training Institute, Dr. Segun Ogunyannwo said such organisations, no matter their might and standing are operating illegally and must see the need to register with the CMD.

In a statement signed yesterday, Ogunyannwo also stated that such organisations are not qualified to train, issue certificates and induct practitioners aside they have not been accredited to do so.

He said candidates who end up having certificates from such unaccredited institutions will not be able to upload them locally and internationally.

According to him, “It has come to our notice that a number of organisations within the Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) Space are operating Illegally. They are not registered with the Centre for Management Development (CMD)

“Any and every organisation that is conducting mediation and other ADR training or any other professional training for that matter in Nigeria and is not registered with the Centre for Management Development (CMD) is operating Illegally; irrespective of the name of the organisation.

“Also, any and every organisation that claims to be “Chartered” but has not sent a Bill to the National Assembly to be PASSED by both Houses and accompanied by Presidential Assent is at best speculative; at worst deceptive and an attempt to mislead the public.

“It is therefore imperative that before registering and attending any professional training and accreditation course that you find out first if the organisation is registered with the Centre for Management Development (CMD). Let them show you proof of same.”

He added that, “The National Council for Management Development (NCMD) Act 2022 requires that individuals, Institutions and organisations providing Training and Consultancy services be registered with the Centre for Management Development (CMD).

UNICAL Alumni Inaugurate Multi-million Naira Starlink Facility for Students

The University of Calabar (UNICAL) has received a significant boost in teaching and learning as the members of the University Alumni from Sets 80-85 on Thursday inaugurated a multi-million naira Starlink Internet facility at the Malabor, where the students hostels are located on campus.

Speaking at the inauguration, the Vice Chancellor of the institution, Prof. Florence Obi, praised the 1980 to 1985 Sets for their act of generosity which she described as invaluable.

Prof. Obi who was represented by the university’s Deputy Vice Chancellor, Prof. Peter Okafor (Research, Linkages and Collaborations), said: “Our students will now have 24/7 high-speed internet access to knowledge, research, and opportunities without borders.

“This initiative will shape lives for generations and sets a shining example of what alumni can achieve when they give back.”

The Chairman of the Board of Trustees, BOT, of the 80-85 Sets Association, Mrs. Elizabeth Omang, who was represented by Dr. Arnold Udoka, said that trends and the world has changed tremendously since the sets graduated from UNICAL (Malabar) in the mid 1980s.

While urging the students in UNICAL, especially those residing in Malabor to put the Starlink facility to effective use, the BOT chairman said: “We hope this facility will empower you to dream big, research deeper, and compete globally. It is our hope that this facility will empower you to dream big, to research deeper, and to compete globally.”

Also speaking at the event, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Network Systems, NSI Technologies Ltd and Consultant to the project, Engr. Ebi Deisah, said the facility would provide the students with access to global digital libraries, as well as enhance their research capabilities.

Deisah said the Starlink Internet service would assist the students to subscribe fast to pools of information available online beyond Nigeria.
