Veteran journalist, Aliyu Abubakar Getso is dead 

A respected journalist and broadcaster, Aliyu Abubakar Getso, has passed away. Family sources confirmed that Getso died on Sunday morning in Kano after battling a long illness. The late Getso was a familiar voice on radio and had worked with several media houses, including Kano State Radio Corporation, Freedom Radio, Premier Radio, and Vision FM.

The late Getso was a familiar voice on radio and had worked with several media houses, including Kano State Radio Corporation, Freedom Radio, Premier Radio, and Vision FM.

He is survived by three wives, many children, and grandchildren.

His funeral prayer (Janazah) will take place at 9:30 a.m. today (Sunday) at his residence near Second Gate, Janbulo, in the Kabuga area of Kano City.

Former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode, has accused the United States, its Western allies, and some Nigerians of plotting to incite a religious war in the country.

In a statement titled “The Fiction of Christian Genocide and the Conspiracy Against Nigeria” posted on X on Sunday, Fani-Kayode alleged that recent comments by American and Canadian figures about “Christian genocide” in Nigeria were part of a broader agenda to destabilize the nation.

He said he was alarmed by remarks from American television hosts Bill Maher and Van Jones, who accused Nigeria of engaging in the persecution of Christians.

Fani-Kayode also cited US Senator Ted Cruz’s plan to introduce a bill to “protect Christians in Nigeria,” and a resolution by the Canadian Parliament describing Nigeria as one of the most dangerous countries for Christians.

According to Fani-Kayode, these developments were suspicious, questioning why Western nations that “hardly care about others” had suddenly shown concern for Nigerian Christians.

“The truth is that the Americans, their allies, and their local collaborators are carefully and craftily preparing the ground for a religious war in our country, and they want us to tear ourselves apart,” he said.

While acknowledging that Christians had been targeted by Islamist terrorists like Boko Haram and ISWAP, Fani-Kayode maintained that Muslims had also suffered equally.

He alleged that the same Western powers now criticizing Nigeria were responsible for arming and supporting the terrorist groups that had plagued the country for over a decade.

The former Minister further claimed that the renewed Western focus on Nigeria was aimed at diverting global attention from the war in Gaza and punishing Nigeria for condemning Israel’s actions at the United Nations.

“Standing up for humanity is our only crime,” Fani-Kayode said, commending Nigeria’s stance at the UN for supporting a two-state solution and condemning civilian casualties in Gaza.

Lagos State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, has denied claims that his ministry demanded N1billion or received N700 million to pause a demolition exercise in Oral Estate in Ojota area of the state.

In a statement on his X page, the commissioner said neither him nor any official from his Ministry demanded or deceived such an amount from property owners.

He said: “My attention has been drawn to a circulating video containing false and malicious allegations that the Ministry demanded money from property owners to pause the ongoing removal of structures on drainage setbacks at Oral Estate, Ikota.

“I must state categorically that these claims are entirely false and a deliberate attempt to blackmail the government.

“Neither I nor any official from the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources has neither ever requested nor received any payment, whether N1 billion, N700 million, or a single kobo, from any property owner.

“The operation to clear the Right of Way and Setbacks to different channels, and canals of illegal obstructions is a public safety imperative, and it has not been paused for any form of negotiation or payment. Our work continues.

“This propaganda is a dangerous distraction from our critical mission to prevent flooding and protect the majority of Lagosians.

“We take these defamatory allegations with the utmost seriousness. We shall be pursuing this matter legally, and the individual behind these claims will be required to provide proof to the appropriate authorities.”
