The Kwara State Government has abolished the payment of the Parents Teachers Association (PTA) levy in all public primary schools across the state, replacing it with annual school grants to ensure schools have sufficient funds.

Chairman of the State universal basic education board (SUBEB), Prof. Shehu Adaramaja, announced this during the opening of bids for the 2024 third and fourth quarters of the UBEC/SUBEB intervention projects in Ilorin.

He explained that the new policy will ease the financial burden on parents while ensuring that every school receives direct government support for its operations. “The state government will now provide running costs for all 1,717 public primary schools in Kwara State,” he said.

Speaking on the ongoing intervention projects, Prof. Adaramaja stated that the initiative includes the construction of classroom blocks with offices and toilets, remodeling and renovation of old classrooms, drilling of solar-powered boreholes, rehabilitation of digital literacy centers, and procurement of foundation literacy materials.

Other components, he added, include the fabrication and distribution of two-seater pupils’ furniture and the implementation of the Safe Schools Initiative in selected local government areas.

He further disclosed that Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq had approved the payment of the 2025 counterpart funds for UBEC/SUBEB intervention projects.

The chairman also cautioned contractors responsible for the projects to adhere strictly to specifications, warning that the government would not tolerate substandard work.

Ekiti State Governor, Biodun Oyebanji, has approved an immediate extension of the retirement age for teachers from 60 to 65 years, while also increasing their years of service from 35 to 40.

The governor made the announcement on Sunday during the 2025 World Teachers’ Day celebration held at the Ekiti Parapo Pavilion in Ado-Ekiti.

As part of efforts to reward dedication and excellence in the teaching profession, Oyebanji also distributed cash prizes worth N46 million to outstanding teachers across the state.

He explained that the extension of the retirement age and years of service is a strategic move to retain experienced hands in the classroom and strengthen the state’s education sector.

A special committee, he noted, would be set up to oversee the implementation process, ensuring that only teachers who are physically and mentally fit would benefit from the new policy.

The governor also announced an upward review of allowances for Science Teachers and Heads of Departments, along with the immediate payment of outstanding 2019 leave bonus arrears.

“Teachers are the foundation upon which the future of our state is built. This initiative is part of our shared prosperity agenda to enhance their welfare and motivate them to continue shaping the next generation,” Oyebanji said.

A coalition of youth groups in Plateau State, “Concerned Plateau Youths”, CPY, have called on security agencies to allow youths in communities prone to attacks by bandits and Fulani militias, to carry weapons so as to enable them protect their lands.

The coalition, which made the appeal during a press parley in Jos on Sunday, said if the youths were allowed to carry weapons, incidents of violent attacks and invasions of the communities would be reduced drastically.

Coordinator of the CPY, Gershon Auta, who addressed the press conference, said as law abiding citizens, the youths do not want to take the laws into their hands, hence the humble request they have made to the security agencies.

“Youths in Plateau State are not cowards and we are not afraid to confront the Fulani militias and bandits who take delight in attacking our rural communities, kill our people, sack communities and take over our lands,” Auta said.

He stated that contrary to misconceptions that Plateau youths are docile and afraid of confronting the attackers, the youths in every local community have what it takes to defend their land and people, but do not want to run foul of the laws.

“We know that in the Nigerian law, it is a crime to have illegal weapons as you have to register them, but as it stands, efforts we have made to procure the arms legally have been made with resistance by the authorities.

“And that makes us wonder how the militias and herdsmen get the sophisticated weapons they use whenever they invade our communities.

“How do they get these weapons? Are their own procured legally or illegally? And why are our youths always denied the opportunity to acquire the same weapons to defend our lands?

“And if we manage to lay hold of one or two local guns to ward off the assailants, soldiers and police would swoop on us and arrest us for possessing illegal weapons.”

Auta narrated an incident in Bokkos local government area where some youths contributed money to buy some locally made guns which they used to fight off some invaders, but the following day, soldiers came from Jos and arrested some youths and branded them criminals and armed robbers.

“In such a situation, what can we do? Our hands are tied. Just imagine a situation where our people who are at the receiving end of the violent attacks are arrested and tagged criminals? As we speak, some of those innocent boys who were arrested are still missing. There are fears that some of them have been killed.

“One of our demand is that the youths who were arrested should be released immediately or be charged to court,” Auta said.

According to him, those who watch social media should know the opposition leader, saying he doesn’t want to glorify ‘him’ by mentioning his name.

The presidential spokesman made this known while fielding questions on TVC’s Politics on Sunday programme.

DAILY POST reports that American television hosts, Bill Maher and CNN’s Van Jones, as well as US Senator Ted Cruz, recently announced plans to introduce a bill in the US Senate to “protect Christians in Nigeria.”

Similarly a resolution passed by the Canadian Parliament had described Nigeria as one of the most dangerous places in the world for Christians.

Speaking on the matter, Bwala stressed that gone are those days when countries in Africa sit back idle against what he called Western disinformation campaign.

“Yeah, of course, a Nigerian politician traveled to the US, as soon as he returned, we started seeing all of that. It is textbook.

“These are not things that we are surprised by, especially when you have a situation where the opposition don’t even know the concept and the basis and the idea behind opposition.

“The job of opposition is to provide alternative idea. So when you don’t have alternative idea, the next thing you think to do is to create a scenario where the Nigerian state will not be at peace. Yes, I agree to that fact,” Bwala replied when asked if he thinks the ‘Christian genocide’ narrative was also supported by opposition in Nigeria to discredit the administration of President Bola Tinubu.

“I mean, those who watch social media will know the opposition leader. I don’t want to glorify him by mentioning his name, but everybody knew he traveled to the United States. Few days after he returned, all these things started.

“But let me say this, because I look beyond him. You see gone are those days when countries in Africa sit back indolent when there is a Western disinformation campaign against those countries.

“It’s been happening, and it has been a textbook that is often used in other countries to force all kinds of things to make the government unpopular,” he added.
