Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State has described the passing of elder statesman and renowned boardroom icon, Dr Christopher Kolade, as a monumental loss to Nigeria.

Dr Kolade, a distinguished broadcaster, diplomat, and corporate leader, died on Thursday morning at the age of 92.

In a statement issued through his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr Gboyega Akosile, Governor Sanwo-Olu paid glowing tribute to the late Kolade, describing his death as “the end of an era” and a painful loss not only to Lagos State but to the entire nation.

The governor hailed Dr Kolade’s lifelong commitment to integrity, excellence, and corporate governance, noting that his exemplary leadership across the public and private sectors will remain a guiding light for future generations.

“On behalf of my family, the government, and the people of Lagos State, we celebrate the life and legacy of a legend, a revered boardroom guru and former Nigerian High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, Dr Christopher Kolade, whose impact will continue to resonate across generations,” Sanwo-Olu said.

He praised the late diplomat’s exceptional contributions as an educator, technocrat, and administrator, recalling his time as Chief Executive and Chairman of Cadbury Nigeria Plc and his outstanding service as Nigeria’s envoy to the United Kingdom.

“The legacy of Dr Kolade cannot be forgotten because of the remarkable influence he wielded during his lifetime and his extraordinary service to humanity, his community, and the nation,” the governor added.

Sanwo-Olu also expressed gratitude for Dr Kolade’s faith and commitment to ethical leadership, describing him as “a blessing to his generation” and “a shining example of integrity and honour.”

The governor extended heartfelt condolences to the deceased’s family, friends, and associates, praying for the peaceful repose of his soul and strength for his loved ones to bear the irreparable loss.

“May the Almighty grant Dr Christopher Kolade eternal rest and comfort his family during this difficult time,” Sanwo-Olu said.

Abia State Governor, Alex Otti has said that his administration prioritizes the healthcare and general welfare of the people, calling for a collective action in prevention of blindness.

Otti stated this on Thursday in Umuahia during a symposium organized by Abia State Eye Health Management Bureau, to mark World Sight Day.

The Governor, who was represented by the Commissioner for Health, Professor Enoch Ogbonnaya Uche, said that the reforms his administration was carrying out in the healthcare sector led to upgrading of facilities and improvement in the welfare package of health workers.

He reminded Abia people that no free medical outreach would be allowed in part of the State unless such outreach is approved by the Ministry of health.

Otti explained that the measure was to prevent the 2024 incident where many community members in Abiriba, Ohafia LGA became unconscious after consuming drugs that were given to them at a free medical outreach.

In her speech, the Administrator, Abia State Eye Health Management Bureau, Dr Mrs Betty Emeka-Obasi disclosed that since the inception of the administration of Governor Alex Otti, the State has been consistent in commemorating World Sight Day.

The administrator, who warned residents against using herbal concoction to treat eye problems, said such experiment would further damage their eyes.

She called for early eye screening, regular eye examination and patronage of government hospitals for eye care.

Mixed reactions are trailing the call by the newly installed Olubadan, Oba Rashidi Ladoja for the creation of Ibadan State.

DAILY POST reports that the proposed state is to be carved out from the present Oyo State and some part of Ondo State.

Ladoja’s call for the creation of Ibadan State came during his coronation in Ibadan, the Oyo State Capital, Ladoja.

He urged President Bola Tinubu to prioritize the creation of the state.

“My people sent me a message to Mr President. Mr President, they said the creation of Ibadan State is their priority,” he said.

The Ibadan State is part of the 46 states being proposed for creation from other regions of Nigeria before the National Assembly.

The bill for the creation of Ibadan State which was brought before the House of Representatives was sponsored by Hon. Abass Adigun, from Ibadan North-East/Ibadan South-East Federal Constituency.

The bill marks the initial step towards altering the constitution to establish a new state.

On Thursday, the House of Representatives took a major step towards the creation of the state, as the bill seeking to establish Ibadan State from the present Oyo State passed its second reading.

The proposed legislation is aimed at amending the 1999 constitution to officially recognise Ibadan as a state.

While leading the debate on the floor of the House, Adigun argued that the bill represents a “monumental step toward equitable development through true federalism and the fulfilment of the long-held aspiration of the people of Ibadan.”

He noted that despite Ibadan’s historical significance as the former capital of the old Western Region, alongside cities like Enugu and Kaduna that have since become states, it remains without such recognition.

According to the lawmaker, Ibadan possesses the required population size, economic capacity, and landmass to merit statehood. He also claimed that a single local government in Ibadan is larger than three combined local governments in Bayelsa State.

The state request has been generating mixed reactions.

Southwest doesn’t need additional State now – Aiyedatiwa’s aide

Hon Akindele Adeniyi, the Senior Special Assistant to Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa on Mobilization, said the creation of State should not be paramount in the Southwest now.

Adeniyi said the Southwest should be preoccupied with how to ensure developmental projects that would make things easy for people of the region and creation of additional states.

Speaking with DAILY POST, Adeniyi said: “They called for a public hearing in Abuja and they will go round the Southwest collating the views of the people.

“But for me, what we have on ground now is what we need to maintain. Regionalism is the most important so that whatever we get there we can use to take care of our region.

“We have six states in the Southwest; creating Ibadan State and removing part of Ondo to join another area is not what we should be doing at this moment.

“It’s how to stabilize what’s on ground, how to ensure developmental projects and all those things to make sure that everybody is living well in the society.

“So I don’t believe that the creation of the State should be what is paramount in our agenda.”

How Ibadan State will impact Southwest – APC

The Publicity Secretary of Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Seye Oladejo, said the creation of Ibadan State will have significant political, economic, and cultural implications on the Southwest.

Oladejo said: “The creation of Ibadan State should it come to fruition carries significant political, economic, and cultural implications for the South West region of Nigeria.”

He identified the implications of Ibadan State creation on the Southwest to include

He said: “Oyo State, as it currently stands, is one of the largest and most politically complex in the South West. The creation of Ibadan State would correct long-standing concerns about the concentration of power and resources in Ibadan within the larger Oyo structure.”

He added that it would give the people of Ibadan a distinct political identity and representation at the federal level, more senators, Representatives, and federal appointments.

Oladejo noted that for the “South West as a whole, the emergence of another state strengthens the region’s influence in national politics, particularly in federal decision-making and resource allocation.”

Stressing that the new state would enhance administrative efficiency, he said: “splitting the vast Oyo State will allow for more focused governance, development planning, and infrastructure delivery.”

The APC spokesman in Lagos State said Ibadan State if created would be more powerful economically.

“Already one of Nigeria’s oldest and most industrialized cities, Ibadan could serve as a more powerful economic nucleus – attracting industries, startups, and research centers to complement Lagos,” he added.

The Executive Director of the organization, Samson Itodo, stated this on Thursday while featuring in an interview programme on Arise Television.

He said there is little or no time, which is why the entire transition process needs to come to a close as soon as possible.

His comment is coming barely 24 hours after the nomination of Prof Amupitan as chairman of INEC.

“I think that when you look at his pedigree, he has all the professional qualifications based on what we have been told and also someone who was my teacher back then in the university.

“Yes he’s got his accomplishment and pedigree but when you look at INEC as an institution, you require more than that. You require individuals who have the courage to withstand political pressure.

“At the end of the day if he’s cleared by the Senate, the team he will work with is critical because INEC has a lot of personnel ranging from Electoral Officers to Resident Commissioners.

“I think he’s got his work cut out for him with the FCT election and some governorship elections coming close,” Itodo said.

He said that the internal reforms within INEC need to be holistic in terms of the quality of people who will come as Resident Electoral Commissioners.

Human rights activist and former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress, AAC, Omoyele Sowore, has accused the Nigerian government of treating the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu, unfairly because he is Igbo.

Speaking on Arise Television’s Prime Time programme on Thursday, Sowore said the continued detention and trial of Kanu reflect the systemic marginalization of the Igbo people in Nigeria, including within the justice system.

He recalled that Kanu had, at a court appearance last year, promised to end violence in the South-East if granted release, but the government has failed to act on that assurance.

Sowore lamented that while Nigerians from other ethnic groups often escape severe consequences for their actions, the same cannot be said for the Igbo.

“He made an open declaration in court where he said, ‘Give me five minutes if I’m released, I’ll end the violence in the Southeast.’ What more do you want from him? The government has a duty to protect the public; it’s not his job to protect the Southeast or Southwest.

“If you are a Nigerian, you can get away with a lot of things, but if you are an Igbo Nigerian, you can’t. The odds are stacked against you,” he stated.

Sowore compared Kanu’s situation to that of the Yoruba Nation agitators, who, according to him, have not faced similar levels of prosecution or repression despite engaging in controversial activities, including hijacking a radio station.

He further criticized the slow pace of Kanu’s trial, saying no credible evidence or witnesses have been presented to justify his prolonged detention.

“The only witness that testified did not accuse him of any crime. He didn’t say he found a gun on him or that he was importing weapons.

“He only said Kanu declared that he wanted Biafra. I’ve checked the Nigerian constitution; there’s nowhere it’s stated that it’s a crime to say you want Biafra,” Sowore added.

Human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has alleged that the continued detention of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu, is being influenced by some politicians from the South-East who believe his release could negatively affect their political ambitions.

Speaking on Arise Television’s Prime Time programme on Thursday, Sowore said he was aware of conversations dating back to the early days of President Bola Tinubu’s administration where some political actors in the region opposed Kanu’s release for fear it could impact the outcome of elections in Imo State.

According to him, despite public statements by some leaders calling for Kanu’s release, many of them privately hold contrary views. He added that his recent efforts to contact South-East governors and other political leaders for coordinated action were mostly ignored.

“I once declared that Kanu’s ordeal is as a result of some persons in the Southeast who took a decision that his release would jeopardize their political careers and future. I know this as far back as when Tinubu freshly became president.

“I reached out to Soludo, who I know personally—no response. I reached out to Alex Otti, who used to be a columnist for Sahara Reporters—no response.

“The only nominal response I got was that we shouldn’t have dragged them where we did. I also reached out to Peter Obi, but I was told he’s in Rome,” Sowore said.

He, however, commended Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe for supporting the move, recalling that the lawmaker had suffered politically for standing as surety for Kanu in the past.

Sowore noted that while several young people across the country have shown strong support for Kanu’s release, there is still no unified position among South-East political, traditional, and religious leaders.

He added that the Nigerian government appears to be pushing back in response to the growing public calls demanding Kanu’s freedom.
