The Chief of Staff to President Bola Tinubu, Femi Gbajabiamila, has disclosed why he became a lawyer.
Gbajabiamila, who is a former Speaker of the House of Representatives, disclosed that his inability to join the Nigerian Army pushed him into becoming what he termed a “bloody lawyer.”
In a video of him addressing some soldiers, the CoS to the president described the military as an inspiration to Nigerians.
He said: “Honestly, my height, my weight, my strength, everything disqualified me.
“Every time I attempted, I looked at the person to my right who is also attempting and the person to my right who also came for the interview, nobody needed to tell me to go home.
“I admire you guys so much and it’s one of the things I aspire to, so you are an inspiration to people like us.
“It was when I could not join the military that I went and became a bloody lawyer, God bless you.”

Ahead of the 2027 general elections, a senior lecturer in political science and international relations at Nile University in Nigeria, Dr Iroro Izu, and other leaders in the civil society organisations (CSOs) have warned against continued exclusion of women, youths and people living with disabilities from governance.
The political scientist also called on the Nigerian government to ensure a rapid approach to enforcing inclusivity in lawmaking and entire political processes, beginning with the National Assembly having more women.
Speaking Friday in Abuja, during the 2nd Annual Otivism Lecture in honour of a pro-democracy activist and development expert, Dr Otive Igbuzor.
He said women suffer exclusion through the sexist political culture, financial constraints, violence and intimidation, cultural and religious norms, limited access to education and economic opportunities, and media representation and misrepresentation, among others.
He said, “In Nigeria, inclusive governance faces precarious conditions marked by limited participation of marginalised groups, particularly women, youths, and people with disabilities, in economic, social, and mainly political processes.
“This exclusion hinders effective representation and decision-making, potentially leading to social and political instability. Efforts to promote inclusion are often hampered by institutional, individual, and socio-cultural or patriarchal barriers, requiring comprehensive and collaborative interventions to extirpate.
“There is no doubt that the absence of inclusivity in governance has had dismal consequences on the Nigerian state. Exclusion from governance has created a sense of injustice, marginalisation, and resentment, all of which have the potential of fuelling social unrest and instability and enthroning a state devoid of real patriotism, citizen loyalty, and collective action towards progress.”
According to him, one of the major planks upon which Otivism is built is the necessity to integrate the elements of inclusivity in all spheres of society so as to achieve significant milestones of symmetry, equity, fairness, justice and people power that will see that no one is left out or left behind – regardless of their status of birth, gender type, economic condition, level of education, religious disposition, regional divide or socio-political affiliation.
“Otivism as an ideology is anchored on force and truth, openness and fairness, compassion and collaboration for the betterment of society. “Otivism is not an ideology of lamentation, blame games or pessimism, but of action, fortitude and optimism.”
While calling for more participation in politics by the citizens, the founding Executive Director of the Centre for Leadership Strategy and Development (Centre LSD), Dr Otive Igbuzor, said the quest for good governance can only be actualised if the right persons are entrusted with the governance of the country.
The pro-democracy activist warned that if the vast majority of God-fearing people, religious people, and professionals from all walks of life shy away from active participation in politics due to the notion that it is a dirty game, they stand the risk of leaving the terrain to charlatans to administer the country.
He insisted that the conduct of free, fair, credible and violence-free elections remains the panacea to inclusive governance whereby the poor, persons living with disability, women and youths would have a say in the choice of those entrusted with the responsibility of administering the three tiers of government in the country.
“If we have free, fair, credible and violence-free elections, more women will participate. Secondly, we need some deliberate policies for inclusion. Quota for women, quota for youth and quota for persons living with disability. Thirdly, we need participatory democracy as an approach. Such that in political parties, even in families, there will be participation and there will be no imposition. Once these three approaches are practised in any society, you will have inclusive governance,” he noted.

Former Senate Leader and Senator representing Borno South, Ali Ndume, has called on the Federal Government to initiate Special Presidential Priority Projects in the North-east region.
He said doing so would enable the authorities to tackle decades-long infrastructural decay exacerbated by insurgency.
Ndume made the call in a statement Friday in Abuja, following the recent visit of North-east governors to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the Presidential Villa.
The senator, while commending the North-east Governors Forum led by Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Zulum, described the region as “comatose” after over 15 years of insecurity-driven neglect.
He, therefore, urged President Tinubu to reflect the region’s pressing developmental needs in both the 2025 Supplementary Budget and the 2026 Appropriation Bill.
Ndume said: “Fifteen years down the line, there hasn’t been any meaningful infrastructural development in the North-east as it has been ravaged by insurgents.
“Now that the insurgents have receded due to the efforts of our military who have regained lost grounds, contractors can now move to sites.
“It is time for the Federal Government to give urgent and focused attention to the region.”
During the governors’ meeting with President Tinubu on Wednesday, Governor Zulum presented a list of 17 critical road and rail projects that have been abandoned for decades.
These included the Kano–Maiduguri Road; the Port Harcourt–Jos–Bauchi–Maiduguri Railway; the Bama–Mubi–Yola Road; the Wukari–Jalingo–Yola Road and the Duguri–Mansur Road (currently an ongoing NNPC project).
They also included the Bauchi–Gombe–Biu–Damaturu Road; the Damaturu–Geidam Road; the Bauchi–Ningi–Nasaru–Babaldo Road and the Gombe–Potiskum Road.
Others are the Damaturu–Biu Road; the Alkaleri–Futuk Road; the Maiduguri–Damboa–Yola Road; the Gombe–Dukku–Darazo Road; the Biu–Gombe Road; the Ibi–Shamdam Road; the Maiduguri–Monguno–Baga Road; and the Maiduguri–Ngala–Bama–Banki Road.
The governors also appealed for the resumption of oil exploration activities in the Kolmani and Lake Chad basins, which are considered critical to unlocking the region’s economic potential.
Ndume, in the statement, stressed that the proposed Special Presidential Priority Projects should not be treated as routine capital works.
Rather, he said, they should be taken as strategic national interventions that demand dedicated funding and oversight due to their urgency and importance.
He further charged the North-east Governors Forum not to relent in advancing initiatives that would uplift the quality of life for citizens in the region.
He noted that renewed infrastructural development would not only revitalize economic activities but also consolidate the gains made in security.

The Chief Judge of Kano State, Justice Dije Abdu-Aboki, has ordered the release of six inmates who had spent several years in custody without trial.
The decision was announced during her official visit to custodial centres in the state, according to a statement by the Public Relations Officer of the Nigerian Correctional Service, Kano Command, Musbahu Lawan.
Justice Abdu-Aboki explained that the release was due to stalled prosecutions, missing case files, and long delays in legal proceedings. She said the move was part of efforts to improve justice delivery and reduce prolonged pre-trial detention in Kano.
She urged closer collaboration among the police, the Attorney General’s office, and the Nigerian Correctional Service to ensure timely dispensation of justice.
The Chief Judge also advised the released inmates to desist from crime and reintegrate peacefully into society.
Controller of Corrections in Kano, Ado Inuwa, cautioned the freed inmates to avoid acts that could return them to prison and commended ongoing rehabilitation programmes aimed at making ex-inmates self-reliant.

The Department of State Services (DSS) has brought terrorism charges against two senior commanders of Ansaru, an Al-Qaeda-linked terror group, over their alleged role in violent attacks across Nigeria.
The suspects are Mahmud Usman, also known as Abu Bara’a/Abbas/Mukhtar, who is described as the Emir of Ansaru, and his deputy Mahmud al-Nigeri, also called Malam Mamuda. They were recently captured during security operations.
According to the DSS, the charges against them include leading a terrorist organisation, funding its activities, recruiting members, and planning violent operations nationwide.
Their arraignment at the Federal High Court in Abuja is expected soon.
Nuhu Ribadu, the national security adviser (NSA), said the two men were behind the July 2022 Kuje prison attack, where more than 600 inmates, including Boko Haram suspects, escaped.
Ribadu explained: “Abu Bara was the coordinator of terrorist sleeper cells across Nigeria and the mastermind of several high-profile kidnappings and armed robberies used to finance terrorism.”
On Mamuda, Ribadu revealed that he trained in Libya between 2013 and 2015 under foreign jihadists from Egypt, Tunisia, and Algeria, specialising in handling weapons and making explosive devices.
The NSA also linked the suspects to the 2013 abduction of French engineer Francis Collomp in Katsina, the 2019 kidnapping of Musa Uba, Magajin Garin Daura, and the kidnapping of the Emir of Wawa.
Ribadu described their arrest as “a turning point”, noting that the duo maintained strong networks in Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso.
