A civil rights group, the Young Nigerian Rights Organization, has urged Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori to take steps to immediately decongest prisons in the state.
Lead activist, Comrade Victor Ojei, a.k.a. Wong Box, made the call in a statement sent to our correspondent in Warri.
He said, “The Delta State Administration of Criminal Justice Law 2022 recognizes that the existing model should shift from punitive to reformative, granting judges and magistrates the discretion to impose non-custodial measures in appropriate cases.”
He opined, “Such alternative sentencing options are vital in ensuring that minor offenders are not needlessly detained.”
According to Comrade Ojei, “The law empowers courts to utilize community service, which reduce[s] congestion in prisons,” helps rehabilitate prisoners, and prevents “convicts who commit simple offences from mixing with hardened criminals.”
Comrade Ojei also said, “The law endorses the power of the Prerogative of Mercy, also referred to as clemency, state pardon, or amnesty, as a useful tool in the administration of criminal justice to decongest custodial centres.”
He said Governor Oborevwori should use his office to: “Activate non-custodial sentencing mechanisms, especially for minor and first-time offenders, through community service or probation.
“Expedite the application of the Prerogative of Mercy, granting amnesty or pardon where due, to relieve overcrowded custodial facilities.
“These steps align with the law’s intention to foster efficiency, fairness, and rehabilitation within the criminal justice system and will help in restoring justice and humanity to our penal system.”

Public analyst and lawyer Justice Osai Ahiakwo has faulted President Bola Tinubu for flouting his own directive on curbing incessant foreign trips by government officials, describing it as wasteful and a clear case of misplaced priority.
Speaking with DAILY POST in Calabar, Ahiakwo recalled that the president had earlier cautioned public officials against frequent foreign travels in the name of fiscal prudence, yet has continued to embark on trips himself, including his current two-week “work vacation” in Europe.
He warned that such disregard for financial discipline undermines the government’s credibility and worsens the nation’s economic woes.
According to the lawyer, excessive foreign travel drains scarce resources, contributes to overspending, fuels debt accumulation, and damages Nigeria’s global image.
He lamented that wastage in governance has become routine, with neither the legislature nor state assemblies checking executive recklessness.
“The President must lead by example if he expects others to embrace fiscal responsibility. A government that lacks budget discipline cannot revive a failing economy,” he stressed, adding that both federal and state leaders are culpable.
He urged that laws be enacted to limit how often elected officials, including the president, can travel abroad.
He warned that unless such excesses are curtailed, “this embarrassing trend will persist even after this regime.”

At least 76 security personnel have been killed in Benue State over the past year while carrying out their duties, Governor Hyacinth Alia has disclosed.
The governor stated this in Makurdi while receiving families of the deceased officers drawn from the Police, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), the military, the Benue State Civil Protection Guards, and the joint security outfit, Operation Zenda.
Alia said the state government had approved a cash donation of ₦5 million to each family, with additional support for personnel who sustained injuries in the line of duty.
The governor commended the sacrifices of the fallen officers, stressing that they paid the supreme price to secure peace in the state.
He also expressed appreciation to President Bola Tinubu, the Chief of Defence Staff and Service Chiefs for what he described as their sustained efforts toward restoring peace in Benue.
Quoting him, Alia said: “We appreciate the sacrifice made by these fallen heroes to defend the territory of the state and ensure that the citizenry lives in peace.
It is a heavy burden but we will continue this journey with you. Their memories will continue to be a blessing to us and our state. I sat and saw a mother breastfeeding her baby—that means the child did not know its father because he paid the supreme price.
We will continue to support their widows and you will be visited from time to time. We will ensure your children continue their education through scholarships. We will not leave anyone behind. You will be on the State protocol list. I assure you that the lives your loved ones sacrificed would not be in vain because peace must return to the state.”
The governor further acknowledged the support of the First Lady and the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) in assisting displaced persons in the state.
According to him: “I also appreciate the First Lady and the International Organisation for Migration, IOM, for their humongous support and I assure the Internally Displaced Persons, IDPs, that the committee set up is working to ensure fairness in the distribution of money given to the IDPs. We will not rest on our oars until they all return to their ancestral homes.”
On financial support for bereaved families, Alia added: “Each of the families will receive a cash donation of the sum of N5 million. For those injured too, we will support them. Let us support these families. Be kind to them, be charitable to them. Share with them and visit them, work with them. Give human kindness and face to them.”

Following a reported contamination of ground water by hydrocarbons in Ukwa East Local Government Area of Abia State, the government has set up an emergency management team to tackle the situation.
The Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, made this known in a chat with journalists at Government House, saying that the team would work to protect people from the hazardous effects of drinking the contaminated water.
He said that the water contamination was recorded at Oba community of Ohanso, Ukwa East “where it has been established that water samples taken from the community have been contaminated by hydrocarbons”.
Ukwa East is an oil producing area though its oil wells are presently capped unlike Ukwa West where oil and gas are being produced thereby making Abia to be among the oil-producing states.
Kanu stated that the emergency team led by the Commissioner for Petroleum and Mineral Resources, Professor Joel Ogbonna, “would ensure that necessary remedial actions are taken to provide potable drinking water” for the affected communities.
In addition, he said that the state Ministry of Health would “investigate the extent of danger posed to the health of the indigenes of the community that make use of the contaminated water.
Kanu explained that the Health Ministry investigation would determine the extent the people of Oba Ohanso community “may have been adversely affected by the hydrocarbons that have been ingested through the water they drink”.
He said that government would eventually build a water treatment plant in the community to purify their water, noting that hydrocarbons pose health hazards to humans when ingested.
“This remedial and immediate action by the state government underscores the compassionate governance style and philosophy of the state government, to provide immediate solutions to communities that are under danger in any way or form,” Kanu said.
The Petroleum Commissioner, while shedding more light on the water contamination, said that the alarm bell was set off when a man discovered that oil was floating on water from the borehole in his compound.
Meanwhile, Abia Government has taken a firm step to end the pension crisis bequeathed by the past administration and avert a reoccurrence of the past woes of unpaid pensions and gratuities.
The present administration of Governor Alex Otti had inherited a heavy burden of unpaid pensions and gratuities left by his predecessors. Arrears of pension stood at 48 months in some parastatals while unpaid gratuities accumulated for up to 22 years.
But Kanu said that “the state government is set to formally launch its workers’ contributory pension scheme” in order to create a seamless administration of retirees’ benefits.
He said that it was among the decisions taken at this week’s meeting of the State Executive Council, adding that it was a further demonstration of the government’s commitment to improving the welfare of Abia workers.
Kanu said that 10 pension fund administrators(PFAs) have already been selected and approved to operate the scheme, adding that the contributory pension scheme was in tandem with the ongoing reforms in the public service.

Piqued by the attendant carnage on Nigeria highways and other hazardous health-related issues, a university lecturer, Professor Adetunji Adeyinka, has tasked the federal government to urgently review the transport policy in the country and encourage people to commute via non-automobile modes of transport.
Professor Adeyinka made this call while speaking as the guest lecturer at 30th inaugural lecture of Federal University, Lokoja, yesterday
Adeyinka explained that automobiles use fossil fuels that produce hydrocarbons and substances that are harmful to the environment and human health.
In his paper titled, ‘Unplanned Cities, The Dilemma of The Transport Planning and Development in Nigeria’, Adeyinka stated that over 1.61 million people have died on highways across the globe.
According to him, “There is a need to construct and rehabilitate the existing roads to accommodate modern vehicular traffic. There should be provision of some basic transport facilities such as pedestrian walkways, Zebra crossing and street lights.”
He pointed out that provision of pedestrian walkways will encourage students to walk to schools and make them healthier.
He noted that it is necessary to encourage the design and construction of bicycle paths that will run alongside the main roads, stressing that this will reduce the pressure on public transport and personal vehicles. The bicycle is seen as an ecological and low-cost alternative to meet the mobility needs of people.
“This mode of transportation is common in European countries most especially in the Italian city of Venice and Braga in Portugal. Priority should be given to routine maintenance of road networks by the three tiers of government.
“Through regular sensitisation and sanitation exercises, there should be a change in the attitude of citizens towards the maintenance of road transport infrastructure and drainage facilities so as to enhance free flow of water. In order to reduce traffic congestion, this lecture recommends that mass transit and light rail should be introduced in Nigerian cities and other African countries.
“This will, no doubt, reduce the volume of vehicular movement on roads. These modes of transport are more environmental-friendly and sustainable for urban mobility compared to large number of para-transit modes of transportation.
“The operation of motorcycles and tricycles should be restricted to the feeder roads because, apart from the fact that they carry few passengers, their operation on highways poses significant safety risks.
“Their mode of operation is worrisome as they mingle and compete with heavy-duty vehicles on highway.”
