Cross River AGN Elects Beatrice Akonjom as Chairman

The Cross River State Chapter of the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN) has elected Lady Beatrice Akonjom as new chairman of the thespians umbrella body in the state.

She emerged victorious in a keenly contested election held on Saturday in Calabar, defeating her closest rival, Mr Victor Eyamba, to clinch the top seat of the guild in the state.

Akonjom pulled a whopping 105 votes to clinch the top seat of the guild in the state, against Eyamba who got 50 votes, in an election widely described as transparent, peaceful, and credible by actors and industry watchers.

While announcing the results, the Chairman of the AGN Electoral Committee (AGNEC) in the state, Mrs. Ezinne Owoh, described the election as free, fair, and credible, noting that “the transparent process reflects the growing maturity of the guild in the state.”

In her acceptance speech, the new chairman, Lady Akonjom, expressed deep gratitude to the members of the guild for the confidence reposed in her.

She commended members for their peaceful conduct, maturity, and sacrifice during the exercise, especially those who travelled long distances from the Northern, Central, and Southern senatorial districts of the state.

“This victory is not mine alone, but for every member of the Actors Guild of Nigeria, Cross River State Chapter.

I thank you all for your trust and I pledge to work tirelessly to unite and uplift the guild,” she stated.

Also speaking, the Vice President, South-South, of the AGN, Mr. Mokiles, congratulated the new chairman and lauded members for setting an example of peaceful and democratic transition.

He therefore charged the new leadership to consolidate on the gains of the past administration, while working to reposition Nollywood practitioners in Cross River State for greater opportunities.

In her remarks, Chairman of the Interim Executive Committee, Mrs. Maureen Ekpenyong, expressed delight that the transition was smooth, thanking members for their cooperation during her committee’s tenure. She assured the incoming leadership of her full support and cooperation.

In his goodwill message, the immediate past chairman of the Cross River State AGN, Mr. Jo Esse, congratulated Lady Akonjom on her victory.

Esse urged the new chairman to carry every member along in the task of advancing the welfare of actors in the state, as he pledged to continued support for the guild in an advisory capacity.

Others elected as executives include Edet Esuabanga as Vice Chairman, Hon. Sunny Owoche-Secretary, Roseline Kelechi-Treasurer, Winifred Duke-Assistant Secretary, Godas Asuquo-PRO, Nsa Nsa Ita-Chief Whip, Christian Ikobi-DGS and Tonywhite Usor as Financial Secretary.

The election marks a new chapter for AGN Cross River State Chapter, as members look forward to fresh ideas and innovative leadership under Akonjom.

Nigeria and Africa must return to the use of clay vessels for cooking, eating and drinking if the continent is to tackle rising public health challenges and reduce billions spent on disease treatment, said Professor Emmanuel Eghe Egbon, of the Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma.

Delivering the 134th Inaugural Lecture of Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma, Edo State, Prof. Egbon, a scholar of Analytical and Environmental Chemistry, urged Nigerians to embrace clay as a multifunctional earth material that promotes healthier living and sustainable communities.

The lecture titled, ‘Drinking and Eating with Clay Vessels, Renewed Hope: Dynamics of Multifunctional Earth Material’, Egbon stressed that water stored in clay pots contains up to 200 times more oxygen than bottled water, which he described as “dead water” due to plastic storage and processing.

“Drinking from earthen vessels improves digestion, prevents sunstroke, treats sore throats, and enhances metabolism,” he said, adding that clay also detoxifies the body, clears acne, regenerates skin tissue, reduces blemishes, prevents blackheads, and brightens the skin.

According to him, using clay pots eliminates the need for artificial supplements as it helps prevent many diseases plaguing society. He argued that a global dependence on plastic has deepened health hazards, stressing that clay offers a natural, low-cost alternative.

Beyond lifestyle choices, Egbon called for a review of Nigeria’s Chemistry curriculum, recommending a 60 per cent focus on practicals and 40 per cent on applied chemistry, to enable students unlock the potentials of multifunctional earth materials for national development.

The highpoint of the lecture was the official decoration of the Inaugural Lecturer with the university’s medal by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Sunday Olowo Samuel, who described Egbon’s research as groundbreaking.

The National Orientation Agency (NOA) has stepped up its five nationwide enlightenment campaigns in Ekiti State using a multi-media engagement strategy.

The NOA Director-General, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, while flagging off the campaigns in Ado Ekiti, emphasized the use of television, radio and digital platforms to reach citizens with key messages on civic responsibility, disaster preparedness, government programmes, value reorientation and respect for Nigeria’s identity and symbols.

Representing the Director General, the Director of Civic, Values and Democracy Education, Dr. Olukemi Afolayan, featured on Ekiti TV’s “E Jiire”, NTA’s “The Platform”, and Ebi Nla Radio 102.3FM, to sensitize the public on government interventions such as NELFUND, Conditional Cash Transfer, GEEP, NYIF, and the SUPA Project.

She also outlined NOA’s community outreach strategies—including town hall meetings, advocacy visits, school engagements, and market sensitization—while highlighting innovative tools such as the Agency’s CLHEEAN AI platform and the Weekly Explainer e-journal for wider reach, particularly among the youth.

Afolayan then reaffirmed the commitment of the Agency to deepening civic values and fostering collective responsibility towards national development.
