Kwara State Police Command has paraded 46 persons suspected to be bandits, amid heightened security operations in the state.

It was learnt that the suspects are undergoing profiling by law enforcement agencies as part of intensified efforts to flush out criminal networks troubling local communities. Security sources said the operation followed weeks of surveillance in areas notorious for violent attacks and kidnappings.

According to the command, the suspects were intercepted on Thursday while riding motorcycles around the Babanla axis of Ifelodun Local Government Area. They were later transported to the state police headquarters in Ilorin in a white Coaster bus under tight security.

The Babanla community has been in the spotlight in recent weeks after a series of bandit attacks that left residents dead and several others abducted.

This has fueled tension and speculation on social media about the involvement of prominent figures.

Addressing journalists, the Commissioner of Police, Adekimi Ojo, dismissed viral claims that the traditional ruler of Babanla and his queens were among those apprehended.

A post widely circulated online had alleged that the monarch was in police custody after security operatives allegedly traced N120 million to proceeds of banditry, with N90 million supposedly recovered from his palace and N30 million from his wife’s bank account.

The story drew sharp reactions, with some commentators praising it as evidence that “no one is above the law.”

But CP Ojo described the report as false, noting that the Oba of Babanla, Oba Aliyu Adegboyega Yusuf, Arojojoye II, remains on his throne and was never arrested.

“You will discover that the story of the Oba of Babanla being in custody was already circulating before myself and other service chiefs visited Babanla community.

“We, together with the governor, met the traditional ruler in his palace. So, presently, I don’t have any traditional ruler in my custody.

“And the millions of naira they are talking about, the way you are hearing it, that’s how I’m hearing it. That’s why I rely on you people. If I don’t see the story from national or mainstream media platforms, we should discard it,” he stated.

A police officer and a member of the Civilian Joint Task Force, JTF, have been killed following an ambush by bandits in Mada district, Gusau Local Government Area of Zamfara State.
The incident occurred around 5:30 p.m. on Thursday when bandits laid an ambush on joint security operatives deployed to Fegin Mahe village under “Operation Restore Peace.”

According to sources, the operatives engaged the attackers in a gun duel, during which a police officer attached to Tudun Wada Division and a Civilian JTF member were killed.

“The NCO’s service rifle was also carted away by the bandits,” one of the sources said.

The remains of the deceased have since been deposited at the Ahmed Sani Yariman Bakura Specialist Hospital in Gusau.

Security operatives have arrested four persons following an attack on the convoy of Sokoto State Deputy Governor, who was returning from a condolence visit in Shagari Local Government Area.

The deputy governor was said to have visited Shagari town to commiserate with victims displaced by recent bandits’ attacks on their communities when some angry residents reportedly attacked his convoy.

According to sources, the incident occurred around 1 p.m. on Thursday when displaced persons blocked the road and vandalised some vehicles in the entourage.

Troops of Operation FANSAN YANMA were deployed to the scene and swiftly cleared the obstruction, restoring order.

“Four suspects were arrested at the scene and transferred to the Criminal Investigation Department, CID, for discreet investigation,” one of the sources said.

It was further gathered that calm has since returned to the area, while security has been reinforced to forestall a recurrence.

Human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, SAN, has strongly criticised the three-year prison sentence handed to a 28-year-old auto mechanic, Akeem Jimoh, who was convicted of stealing 17 tubers of yam valued at N35,000 in Osun State.

Jimoh was arraigned before an Osogbo Chief Magistrate Court on Wednesday, where he admitted to the offence and pleaded for mercy, explaining that he acted out of hunger.

However, the presiding magistrate, Muibah Olatunji, ruled against leniency and sentenced him to three years’ imprisonment with hard labour, without the option of a fine.

Reacting to the judgment, Falana described the ruling as both “inhumane and economically wasteful.”

“It is high time Nigeria adopted a humane sentencing policy. How does it make sense for the government to spend taxpayers’ money feeding and housing a convict jailed for stealing food items worth N35,000?” He queried.

The Senior Advocate also noted that in many other jurisdictions, thefts committed as a result of hunger are no longer treated as criminal offences, but addressed through social welfare systems.

He confirmed that his legal team had already filed an appeal challenging both the conviction and the sentence.
