Ebola Outbreak Reported in DR Congo, Claims 15 Lives
At least 15 people have died in a new outbreak of the Ebola virus in the Democratic Republic of Congo, the country’s health ministry has said.
The presence of the virus had been confirmed in a 34-year-old pregnant woman who was admitted to hospital last month after showing symptoms that included a high fever and repeated vomiting, the ministry added.
She died a few hours later from multiple organ failure.
This will be the 16th outbreak of the deadly virus in the vast central African state that has poor health services, and is hit by conflict in the east
The latest outbreak is in central Kasai province, with 28 suspected cases recorded, the ministry said.
Officials have urged strict adherence to preventive measures, including frequent handwashing and social distancing in high-risk areas.
Tests identified the Zaire strain of Ebola, a rare but often deadly disease, officials said.
The World Health Organization (WHO) said it was “acting with determination to rapidly halt the spread of the virus and protect communities”.
Four health workers were among the 15 people who had died, it said.
“Case numbers are likely to increase as the transmission is ongoing. Response teams and local teams will work to find the people who may be infected and need to receive care, to ensure everyone is protected as quickly as possible,” WHO added in a statement.
DR Congo had a “stockpile of treatments”, including 2,000 doses of the Ervebo vaccine, “effective to protect against this type of Ebola”, the global health body said.
The last Ebola outbreak in DR Congo was three years ago, killing six people.
An outbreak in 2018-20 was far deadlier, claiming more than 2,000 lives.
The virus, which is thought to have originated in fruit bats, was first detected in 1976 near the Ebola River in what is now DR Congo.
People are infected when they have direct contact through broken skin, or the mouth and nose, with the blood, vomit, faeces or bodily fluids of someone with Ebola.

Former Anambra State Governor and Presidential Candidate of Labour Party in the 2023 election, Mr Peter Obi has praised missions for their contributions in propagating quality healthcare in Nigeria.
Obi stated this on Friday when he visited Aguata Anglican Diocese to support the acquisition and revitalisation of the Good Hope Specialist Hospital in Isulo.
Obi during the visit donated N10 million to the facility which is located along Basden Road in Isulo, Orumba South Local Government Area of Anambra State.
Presenting a cheque of N10 million which he said is the first tranche of his support, Obi expressed profound joy at contributing to a project that will enhance access to quality healthcare for the people.
He noted that his decision to support the Diocese was motivated by his personal conviction that investing in healthcare is one of the most meaningful ways to uplift society.
“Over the years, I have seen first-hand the transformative impact of projects executed by the faith-based organisations when given the right support.
“The Diocese of Amichi’s hospital facility, which I was privileged to support as Governor, has been turned around so remarkably that it now runs one of the best Schools of Nursing in Nigeria. I am confident that this facility at Isulo will follow the same path and become a beacon of hope for our people,” Obi stated.
Chairman of the Aguata Diocesan Hospital Board and Archdeacon of Ezira Archdeaconry, Ven. Dr. M. C. Obi, who received Obi during the visit, also led him on a tour of the facilities.
He expressed deep gratitude for his continued commitment to projects that uplift humanity, assuring Obi that the Diocese would not only put the facility to optimal use but also ensure that it becomes a centre of excellence for healthcare delivery.

The 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has criticised President Bola Tinubu for what he described as frequent travels abroad, saying it suggests the President finds it uncomfortable to stay in Nigeria.
In a post on X on Friday, Obi knocked Tinubu for taking off to France on Thursday for his annual holiday, barely six days after returning from a 15-day trip.
He noted that the President has travelled to France on 10 occasions in just two years.
“From all indications, our President is not finding his home in Nigeria conducive for a long stay, and it should be concerning to us,” Obi said.
The former Anambra governor faulted Tinubu for leaving the country at a time when Nigerians were grappling with severe hunger, insecurity, and worsening living conditions.
He cited reports that 79 per cent of Nigerians are facing food insecurity and recalled that international rankings recently placed Nigeria as the worst country to give birth and one of the worst places to live.
Obi also referenced recent tragedies, including the killing of over 50 people in attacks in Katsina State, the kidnapping of over 60 persons, and a boat mishap in Niger State that claimed the lives of at least 60 women and children.
He argued that the president should have visited the victims’ families before embarking on another trip abroad.
“No holiday is more important than the Nigerian lives you swore to protect,” Obi said.
“At a time when Nigerians need leadership, empathy, and presence, a President should not choose foreign holidays.”

Court issues arrest warrant against businessman Samson Davies
A Magistrate Court in Gusau, Zamfara State, has issued a warrant for the arrest of businessman Samson Davies, founder of Signature Advisory Limited, in connection with allegations of misappropriation, criminal breach of trust, and defamation.
The warrant, dated July 29, 2025, was contained in certified court records.
According to law enforcement officials familiar with the matter, efforts were made in early August to execute the warrant at Mr Davies’ Abuja residence in Wuse Zone 2 to no avail.
When asked to respond, Davies did not directly address the Zamfara proceedings but instead referred to a separate summons reportedly issued by an Abuja court on August 12, two weeks after the Zamfara warrant was signed.
The arrest order adds to a series of pending legal issues involving the businessman.
In June, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, announced that it had filed a criminal charge against Davies and his company, Signature Advisory Limited, before the Special Offences Court in Ikeja, Lagos.
According to EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale, the Lagos Zonal Directorate 1 of the commission arraigned Davies and his firm before Justice Mojisola Dada on a one-count charge bordering on alleged dishonest conversion of ₦190,791,494 belonging to Ronchess Global Resources Plc.
The charge sheet stated: “That you, Samson Davies and Signature Advisory Limited, sometime between October 2022 and October 2023, in Lagos, within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, dishonestly converted to your own use the aggregate sum of N190,791,494 (One Hundred and Ninety Million, Seven Hundred and Ninety-One Thousand, Four Hundred and Ninety-Four Naira), property of Ronchess Global Resources Plc.”
Davies pleaded not guilty to the allegation. Following his plea, EFCC counsel C.C. Okezie asked the court to remand him in custody pending trial.
Defence counsel Ifeoma Esom, however, requested bail on liberal terms.
Justice Dada subsequently granted bail in the sum of N50 million with two sureties in like sum.
One of the sureties was required to own landed property in Lagos, and the defendant was directed to deposit his international passport with the court.
The sureties were also ordered to produce evidence of tax clearance.
Court records further indicated that following his arraignment, Davies was remanded at Kirikiri Correctional Facility in Lagos until July, when he was released upon meeting the bail conditions. The trial was adjourned to October 2025 for continuation of proceedings.
