The decision was announced during her official visit to custodial centres in the state, according to a statement by the Public Relations Officer of the Nigerian Correctional Service, Kano Command, Musbahu Lawan.

Justice Abdu-Aboki explained that the release was due to stalled prosecutions, missing case files, and long delays in legal proceedings. She said the move was part of efforts to improve justice delivery and reduce prolonged pre-trial detention in Kano.

She urged closer collaboration among the police, the Attorney General’s office, and the Nigerian Correctional Service to ensure timely dispensation of justice.

The Chief Judge also advised the released inmates to desist from crime and reintegrate peacefully into society.

Controller of Corrections in Kano, Ado Inuwa, cautioned the freed inmates to avoid acts that could return them to prison and commended ongoing rehabilitation programmes aimed at making ex-inmates self-reliant.

Dr Sijibomi Ogundele, popular businessman known as Sujimoto, has declared that he is not a thief or a fugitive.

Sujimoto vowed to visit the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, to clear his name over a contract arrangement with the Enugu State government that went “sour.”

EFCC had declared the prominent real estate firm belonging to him wanted for money laundering and diversion of funds.

However, Sujimoto explained that the fallout with Enugu State government was due to hike in the prices of construction materials.

In a video, the businessman who broke down in tears said: “I’m not a thief or fugitive, this is a contract between my company and the Enugu State government. Enugu State government asked me to help them build a couple of projects which was very interesting.

“In the middle of the project I was going to Enugu every week and the governor said he wanted to build the tallest building in Nigeria, 69 storey building, I designed it and he gave it to me.”

The Department of State Services (DSS) has brought terrorism charges against two senior commanders of Ansaru, an Al-Qaeda-linked terror group, over their alleged role in violent attacks across Nigeria.

The suspects are Mahmud Usman, also known as Abu Bara’a/Abbas/Mukhtar, who is described as the Emir of Ansaru, and his deputy Mahmud al-Nigeri, also called Malam Mamuda. They were recently captured during security operations.

According to the DSS, the charges against them include leading a terrorist organisation, funding its activities, recruiting members, and planning violent operations nationwide.

Their arraignment at the Federal High Court in Abuja is expected soon.

Nuhu Ribadu, the national security adviser (NSA), said the two men were behind the July 2022 Kuje prison attack, where more than 600 inmates, including Boko Haram suspects, escaped.

Ribadu explained: “Abu Bara was the coordinator of terrorist sleeper cells across Nigeria and the mastermind of several high-profile kidnappings and armed robberies used to finance terrorism.”

On Mamuda, Ribadu revealed that he trained in Libya between 2013 and 2015 under foreign jihadists from Egypt, Tunisia, and Algeria, specialising in handling weapons and making explosive devices.

The NSA also linked the suspects to the 2013 abduction of French engineer Francis Collomp in Katsina, the 2019 kidnapping of Musa Uba, Magajin Garin Daura, and the kidnapping of the Emir of Wawa.

Ribadu described their arrest as “a turning point”, noting that the duo maintained strong networks in Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso.

In a statement issued by its Director General, Ishaq S. Dabo, the organisation said Senator Umar has always been committed to peace, dialogue and community welfare.

“Senator Shehu Buba Umar has a long record as an advocate for peace and dialogue. Even before his election to the Senate, he worked with respected Islamic clerics and community leaders, including those who assisted in government-led negotiations aimed at restoring peace in affected communities,” the statement read in part.

It added that the video was the handiwork of “irresponsible political actors threatened by Senator Umar’s growing acceptability and effectiveness.”

The group urged the public not to share or amplify unverified content, while also calling on media organisations and social media platforms to investigate and take down the video.

Senator Umar, reacting personally to the allegations, said: “I have always stood for peace and the wellbeing of our people. I reject these baseless attacks and will continue my work for the people of Bauchi South. I urge everyone to verify information before sharing it and to remain focused on the issues that matter to our communities.”

The SBU Vanguard further warned that it was documenting the circulation of the video and would pursue legal action against those responsible for producing and disseminating the defamatory material.

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has accused the Nigeria Police Force of being used as a tool of political suppression, warning that recent actions against its leaders are dangerous for democracy.

The party raised the alarm over a police summons issued to former Kaduna State Governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, and the attack on the convoy of former Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami (SAN), in Kebbi State.

In a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC said the police appear more focused on silencing the opposition than protecting Nigerians from bandits and other criminals.

“At a time when terrorists and criminal gangs operate freely in large parts of the North, the Nigerian Police seems more interested in harassing opposition leaders than safeguarding lives and property,” Abdullahi said.

He alleged that in Kaduna, thugs armed with stones and cutlasses attacked a peaceful ADC gathering, while police officers reportedly looked the other way.

“Instead of arresting the attackers, the police are now summoning the victims,” he added.

The ADC also condemned the sealing of its party office in Kaduna State ahead of a planned zonal meeting, describing it as a deliberate attempt to stifle lawful political activity.

“Every moment the police spend harassing Mallam El-Rufai and shutting down our party offices is time wasted, time that should be used to confront terrorists and criminals who are destroying lives across the North and unleashing banditry in our cities.

“To make matters worse, the Kaduna police sealed off our offices just before a scheduled meeting of our zonal leaders, a clear attempt to deny us our constitutional right to gather and organize. Let it be clear: these are not isolated incidents. They are part of a deliberate effort to criminalize opposition politics, particularly in states where the ruling party feels threatened by the growing strength of the ADC.”

The ADC urged the Federal Government and the Inspector General of Police to withdraw what it described as politically motivated summons served on Nasir El-Rufai and other party leaders in Kaduna State.

According to the party, the summons have nothing to do with justice or security but are instead aimed at silencing dissent.

It also demanded the immediate reopening of its sealed office in Kaduna and an end to the unlawful obstruction of its political activities, stressing that democracy cannot survive when opposition party structures are repeatedly shut down on flimsy grounds.

“The Nigeria Police must come clean by publishing the names of those who filed the complaints that led to these politically motivated investigations and summons. Nigerians deserve to know who is behind these attacks on political freedom and whose interests they are serving.

“We are also demanding that security agencies arrest and prosecute those who carried out the attack on Abubakar Malami’s convoy in Kebbi, as well as the thugs who violently disrupted our stakeholders’ meeting in Kaduna.

“Failure to hold them accountable only encourages more violence. In addition, there must be an internal disciplinary process within the police to investigate officers who were present but failed to act. Anyone who stood by and allowed political violence to happen has no business wearing the uniform of the Nigerian state.”

The party further urged the Federal Government to redirect the focus of the police toward their constitutional duty of protecting the lives and property of Nigerians, rather than allowing the force to be used as a tool of political manipulation.

The Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers, NUPENG, has hinted on an imminent fuel scarcity across Nigeria.

NUPENG called on its members to down tools and shun loading of petroleum products from Monday, September 8.

In a statement on Friday, jointly signed by Williams Akporeha and Afolabi Olawale, President and General Secretary, NUPENG accused the management of Dangote Refinery of alleged anti-labour practices, inimical to the survival and means of livelihoods of its members under its Petroleum and Tanker Drivers Branch.

The Union specifically expressed strong reservations about the position of Chairman of Dangote Refinery, Aliko Dangote that drivers recruited for operations of its 10,000 Compressed Natural Gas, CNG, Trucks imported into the country would not be allowed to join any trade union.

The union described the position taken by the management of Dangote Refinery as an affront on the right of association, guaranteed under the 1999 Constitution and a breach of relevant international labour laws to which Nigeria is a signatory.

The statement reads partly: “We call on the Nigerian Midstream & Downstream Petroleum Authority, the Authority, for short, to invoke its powers under Section 32(u) & (aa) of the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA).

“Under those two provisions, the Authority is empowered to promote competition and private sector participation in the midstream and downstream petroleum operations.

“The Authority has responsibility to identify, investigate and prevent abuse of dominant positions and restrictive business practices with regard to midstream and downstream petroleum operations.

“Nigeria is a member of the international community and a State member in the International Labour Organisation. Nigeria has ratified Convention No. 87 of 1948, the Convention on Freedom of Association and Protection of the Right to Organise, 1948.

“This Convention had been ratified by Nigeria, as far back as 17th October 1960. Under the Convention, workers have the right to join unions of their choice, for the protection of their employment and trade union rights, and without prior authorization of any employer or authority.

“Indeed, by virtue of section 254C (2) of the Constitution of Nigeria, a ratified ILO Convention is a constitutional provision.

“Therefore, any practice or policy by any employer which seeks to deprive workers of the right of association is an affront to the Constitution.

“By this statement, we call on the Federal Government of Nigeria and its agencies, including well-meaning segments of the Nigerian society, to call the two trillionaire businessmen to order. They should be told to obey the laws of Nigeria. If they persist in their anti-union tyrannical attitudes, NUPENG is set and ready to mobilize its forces to fight within the framework of the law.

The Nigerian Correctional Service, NCS, Akwa Ibom State command, the State Ministry of Justice, Community leaders and other relevant stakeholders in the state have appealed to the governor, Umo Eno to set up State Advisory Committee on Non-Custodial Measures that would ensure effective application of its resolutions.

They highlighted the provisions as contained in the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA) 2015 and the Administration of Criminal Justice Law (ACJL) of Akwa Ibom State 2022, particularly Part 44 of the ACJL which provides for non-custodial measures as alternatives to imprisonment.

This was part of the resolutions taken at the end of a One-Day workshop on the “Effective Implementation of Non-Custodial Measures in Akwa Ibom State” organized by the NCS in collaboration with Akwa Ibom State Judiciary and Ministry of Justice in Uyo, the State capital on Thursday.

In a communique endorsed by the Organizing Committee secretary, Ogbajie Ogbajie and issued to journalists in Uyo on Friday, September 5, the stakeholders said the governor should also provide the necessary legal and financial backing for the committee’s smooth operations.

They noted that the absence of fully established and funded State Advisory Committee on Non-Custodial Measures and a functional Probation Office have hampered the full operationalization of non-custodial measures as envisaged by the Administration of Criminal Justice Law (ACJL).

“His Excellency, the Governor of Akwa Ibom State, is urgently called upon to inaugurate the State Advisory Committee on Non-Custodial Measures and provide the necessary legal and financial backing for an effective application of these measures.” The communique partly read.

Other resolutions taken at the workshop include intensive sensitization and training program for Judges, Magistrates, Lawyers and law enforcement officers on the provisions and procedures for granting non-custodial measures; development and issuance of guidelines to courts across the State on the application and granting of non-custodial orders.

The communique noted that all agencies involved in the justice delivery chain, the Police, Correctional Service and Judiciary should establish a formal framework for collaboration, including a shared database for tracking offenders placed on non-custodial measures.

It added that a massive public awareness campaign should be launched by the State Government in partnership with CSOs and the media in order to educate the citizenry on the benefits of non-custodial measures in decongesting correctional facilities, rehabilitating offenders and enhancing public safety.

“The State should adopt a phased approach by initiating a pilot scheme for non-custodial measures, beginning with some selected Magistrate and Customary Courts in Akwa Ibom State, to serve as a model for Statewide replication.” The communique observed.
