The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission, FCCPC, has warned food vendors against adulteration of goods and produce.

The Executive Chairman, Mr Olatunji Bello, issued the warning during a one-day sensitisation campaign on forced ripening of fruits, adulteration of palm oil, contaminated meat and grains, on Wednesday in Uyo.

Represented by Dr Nkechi Mba, the Director of Quality Assurance and Development in the Commission, Bello said that any vendor that places profit over public safety would faced sanction.

He explained that FCCPC being the apex consumer protection commission with mandate to protect consumer interest in the country would continue to ensure fair market practices and prevent endangering of consumers in all sectors of the economy.

Bello added that food adulteration and forced fruits ripening in markets were dangerous to health and urge the vendors to desist from such act.

“Across the country and around the world, there is the need for strict adherence to food regulations as a matter of urgent public interest.

“Unsafe food not only endangers lives, but also undermines trust in markets, disrupts trade and damages the reputation of large and small businesses,’’ he said.

According to him, Food safety is everyone’s responsibility and FCCPC remains firmly committed to working with all stakeholders to build a market place that is fair, transparent and safe for consumers.

“Upholding food safety and quality is not only a legal obligation but a moral duty,” Bello said.

Earlier, the Director, Consumer and Business Education, FCCPC, Mr Yahaya Gudan, reminded consumers of their right to good health.

Gudan said that the issue of food adulteration and forced ripening of fruits were issues that affected not only the health and wellbeing but also the integrity of food chain.

He said that the practices posed significant health challenge and undermined consumer trust in the food industry.

“Our goal is to equip you with the knowledge and tools needed to make informed decisions and advocate for safer food practices in our communities.

“Together, we can create a safer food environment for everyone,” he said.

In his remarks, the state Coordinator of NAFDAC, Mr John Naeche, warned that using chemical to ripen fruits was dangerous to health and should be stopped.

Also Speaking, a participants, Mrs Nkoyo Etim, said that information learnt at the workshop would be disseminated to other market women to ensure safety of food and avoid adulteration.

Akingboye, popularly known as OBA, reportedly died on Wednesday morning at his Lagos residence.

Confirming Akingboye’s passing in a statement, his aide, Oyeniyi Iwakun noted that details of his burial will be communicated to the public in due course.

“He is survived by wives, children, grandchildren, and siblings. The family requested privacy during this period of grief. Burial arrangements will be communicated in due course,” the statement said.

As at the time of this report, the cause of the politician’s death has not been revealed.

A Coalition of civil society organizations has condemned what it described as careless and reckless attacks on President Bola Tinubu by Omoyele Sowore, a two time presidential aspirant and activist.

Sowore had repeatedly called the President a criminal and liar over the latter’s assertion that his reforms have led to an end to corruption and bolstered the Nigerian economy while addressing investors in Brazil during a state visit.

Addressing the press after a protest at the Ministry of Justice, Abuja, the coalition, under the leadership of Comrade Adeniran Taiwo Olugbenga and Comrade Steve Eriba; Conveners of Initiative for Integrity, Accountability and Probity, IIAP, and Convener Independent Public Service and Accountability Watch, IPSAW, demanded the immediate arrest, investigation prosecution of Sowore for allegedly crossing all lines of decency, respect for constituted authority and fair play.

“By calling a duly elected and legitimate President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria a criminal and liar, Sowore has crossed the red lines and must not be allowed to walk freely while denigrating our institutions and leaders with impunity. This is beyond constructive criticism and opposition politics, this is madness and bitterness taken too far

“Of course freedom of expression is sacred, but it is not a license for lunacy. Our constitution protects speech, not sabotage. Omoyele Sowore’s actions are not activism but a deliberate assault on Nigeria’s soul. Calling our President a criminal and branding our nation as hell abroad is not dissent, it is betrayal.

“For someone who aspired to be the President of this country, Sowore doesn’t build Nigeria’s image, he defaces it. He is not aiming for a better Nigeria but an opportunity to settle scores with political rivals and mislead a few gullible Nigerians

“You don’t curse your country on the world stage and call it patriotism. This is madness and not activism.

“Sowore’s so-called activism is a toxic brew of despair, chaos, and self-promotion. He thrives on wreckage, not reform, on division, not destiny. Nigerian youth have proven that protest can spark progress. EndSARS forced police reforms; Not-Too-Young-Too-Run shattered barriers to leadership. These were movements of vision, fueled by hope and anchored in solutions.

“In clear contrast, Sowore’s brand of activism doesn’t inspire, it poisons minds. He is obsessed with chaos and every national challenge becomes his spotlight, every crisis his megaphone, every pain his performance. This is not activism, it’s social sabotage and must be stopped by all means.

“Sowore’s kind of reckless rhetoric is a spark that ignites extremism, empowers opportunists, and fractures our fragile security. His words are not just noise, they are a direct danger to the Nigerian state

His latest outburst proves it and we must not allow him to infect our youth with this noise and chaos” the text stated.

The Coalition affirmed their support for President Bola Tinubu and the Renewed Hope Agenda which is already having monumental impacts in the lives of Nigerians, vowing to oppose any crisis entrepreneur who might want to jeopardize the reforms of the current administration for their selfish interests.

“We rally today in solidarity with our President and country. We are here today because silence is complicity. True activism involves sacrifice, construction, and transformation. Sowore’s theatre of despair destroys, divides, and distracts.

“We demand decisive state action not to stifle dissent, but to safeguard its integrity; not to mute voices, but to shield Nigeria from hate speech masquerading as activism. No single person’s lust for chaos will chain Nigeria. We are a generation resolved to rise from protest to policy, from stagnation to strength, from despair to destiny,” the text concluded.

Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi has congratulated President Bola Tinubu following his claim that Nigeria has achieved its revenue target for the year.

Speaking on Tuesday, Tinubu had said Nigeria has met its revenue target for the year and his administration is currently stabilizing the economy.

However, Obi noted that Nigeria should not be borrowing and citizens should feel the impact in their daily lives if the economy is stabilizing.

In a post on X titled ‘What does Achieving Revenue Target mean to Nigerians?’, Obi wrote: “The President has announced that our nation’s revenue target for the year has now been achieved by August, which could mean a stabilising economy.

Al-Muhibbah Open University, Abuja, has appointed Professor Yahuza Bello, former vice-chancellor of Bayero University, Kano (BUK), as its pro-chancellor and chairman of the governing council.

The announcement was made during a joint meeting of the university’s board of trustees and governing council held recently in Abuja.

Speaking at the event, Aisha Bala Mohammed, first lady of Bauchi State and chancellor of the university, said the appointment reflects the institution’s commitment to strong governance standards in line with best practices for private universities in Nigeria.

She noted that the meeting also reviewed the university’s progress since it commenced operations two years ago, commending the management for successfully running two uninterrupted academic sessions.

Bala Mohammed urged Nigerians to take advantage of the institution’s programmes to build skills and improve employability. She also called on the federal government to adopt policies that encourage greater private and community participation in education, particularly in supporting the girl child.

In his remarks, Bello thanked the university for the appointment and pledged to support the management in achieving its strategic goals.
