Oborevwori Inaugurates ICT/CBT Centre in Onicha-Olona, Says No Part of Delta Will Be Left Behind

Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, at the weekend, inaugurated an Information and Communications Technology (ICT) and Computer-Based Test (CBT) Centre at Onicha-Olona in Aniocha North Local Government Area, assuring that no part of Delta State will be left behind in his administration’s drive for digital transformation and valuable empowerment especially of youths.
He described the Centre, which has 300 functional work-stations and 300 computers as a remarkable milestone in bridging the digital gap and preparing our youths for competing effectively for opportunities in the 21st Century digital economy within the Global Village space.
Represented by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Dr Kingsley Emu, the Governor expressed appreciation for the valuable contributions of individuals, government agencies and corporate bodies towards the establishment of the ICTand CBT Centre, including the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC), which undertook the construction of the edifice as part of its corporate social responsibility in Delta State.
Situated in the heart the heart of Onicha-Olona town, the Centre, which was built by the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC), has been fully furnished and equipped with state-of-the-art computers and other ICT tools and accessories by the government through the State Ministry of Science and Technology, to ensure it became a fully functional hub for contemporary digital learning.
The governor stressed that in the government’s quest to equitably develop the state, in the spirit of the M.O.R.E Agenda, its commitment to the practice of inclusiveness will ensure that no community in the state was left out.
The governor said, “Today’s event is remarkable as it brings a modern communication and learning hub right to the heart of our community. With the establishment of this ICT and CBT Centre in Onicha-Olona, our young people no longer need to look far for such facilities.
“More than just infrastructure, this state-of-the-art centre represents a bold step in our commitment to bridge the digital divide, empower our people, and prepare Deltans with the skills and opportunities to excel in the 21st Century.
“This facility is a bridge to the future; that is, the global digital economy. No one should be left behind. Indeed, we are creating a state where no one is left behind. We will ensure that no community in Delta is left behind.”
Governor Oborevwori expressed gratitude to Mrs Diana Okonta, former NDIC Board member, for her persistent advocacy to ensure that the dream of a truly functional digital centre in the town became a reality.
Oborevwori also acknowledged the contribution of former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa who gave the initial approval for the takeoff of the first phase of the project.
Delta youths would continue to have access to platforms that promote digital literacy, job creation, and self-reliance under the M.O.R.E development blueprint, he stressed, urging the people of Onicha-Olona, the neighboring communities and beyond to take full advantage of the vast opportunities being offered by the ICT and CBT Centre.
The Delta State Commissioner for Science and Technology, Dr Daniel O. Odigie, noted that the Centre would boost the employment creation efforts of the state government as it is opening a window on the global digital economy by equipping the citizens in the state with the requisite knowledge and skills.
The commissioner, who pointed out that digital knowledge and orientation was noonger optional but a necessity, described the Onicha-Olona ICT and CBT Centre as “a citadel for learning and innovation in coding, app development, data analytics, artificial intelligence and basic computer literacy”.
The new Centre was specifically “designed to nurture talent, spark creativity, and unlock boundless potential”, Dr Odigie explained.
Chairman of Aniocha North Local Government Area, Hon Chinye Bazim, commended Governor Oborevwori for establishing the Centre as well as several other projects in the area, which will go a long way in promoting education, youth empowerment and job creation.
He noted that the Oborevwori administration had executed, and was executing, other projects in Anichoa North, including the Issele-Uku–Otulu Road that was nearing completion, the Onicha-Ugbo township roads and the College of Nursing Science at Onicha-Uku, beside providing logistics support for security in the area.
In his remarks, the President-General of the Onicha-Olona Development Union, Sir Patrick Ejido, highlighted the features of the Centre, saying the facility would greatly enhance learning and employability of its users.
While thanking the NDIC, community leaders and other stakeholders for their different roles toward the actualisation of the project, Ejido assured that the host community would ensure that facility is protected and efficiently managed on a sustainable basis.
The Majority Leader of the Delta State House of Assembly, Hon Emeka Nwaobi, described the centre as a gateway to effective education, innovation and economic growth for not only Onicha-Olona but Delta State at large.
Senior government functionaries including the Head of Service, Dr Mimmie Oseji, several commissioners, traditional leaders from Onicha-Olona and neighboring communities, women and youth groups attended the event spiced with cultural dances.

“For people like Nasir, when they found themselves in the position of office, they don’t know what democracy is all about because they didn’t fight for it.
“He was an unknown figure before 1999 and became DG of BPE. He has never been in a cell for one day. He has never been in prison.
“For me, as you see me here, I have been through the rough times of my life. I have been through many prisons. I have been through many police stations.
“I have served so many years. I wore prison uniform. I wore leg chain. I wore handcuffs as a political prisoner fighting for this democracy that is 25 years old.”

Experts call for ban on imported cassava derivatives to boost local industry
National Coordinator of the Value Chain Development Programme, VCDP, Dr. Fatima K. Aliyu, has urged the Federal Government to ban the importation of certain cassava derivatives to protect the local industry in the country.
Aliyu made the call at a stakeholders’ advocacy meeting in Minna, Niger State, where she observed that imported products like starch and other cassava based items compete with local cassava products, thereby hindering the growth of the sector.
Represented by Mr Agama Sunday, VCDP Market Development Officer, Aliyu also noted that the cassava sector has not grown as rapidly as the rice sector, despite efforts to promote both crops when the programme started about 10 years ago.
She explained that aside competition from imported products, cassava also lacks market opportunities.
According to Aliyu, to tackle the challenge, VCDP has created new market opportunities for cassava products, particularly with companies producing ethanol and other food materials, while urging farmers to expand their production in cassava.
“As at four years ago, there was no growth in the cassava sector until now. And we want it to compete favourably with rice in commercial form to generate revenue for farmers and the country. We want farmers to expand and we need industries to buy them.
“That’s why the Niger State VCDP which is one of our outstanding states in the last 10 years of the programme, decided to hold meetings with stakeholders to discuss on the policy on cassava production and on the need to take advantage of the opportunities that abounds in it,” she said.
Mr. Boma Anga, CEO of Agro Nigeria Ltd, in a paper titled ‘Developing the Dried Cassava Chips for Export’, highlighted the high market demand for dried cassava chips from industries, which currently stands at 25 million metric tons of which Nigeria can only produce 1.2 million metric tons annually.
He emphasized that Niger State has the potential to lead in cassava production and attract agro-industries, given its comparative advantage in cassava production and good performance in rice production.
Prof. A. A. Coker of the department of Agriculture, Federal University of Technology, Minna, recommended developing a roadmap to address challenges and opportunities in the cassava industry.
He also suggested implementing tariffs to protect local industries, increasing government revenue, and encouraging value addition.
Mrs. Elizabeth Yisa, Niger VCDP Business and Marketing Development Officer, stated that the stakeholders’ meeting was organized to discuss ways to move the cassava policy, and address challenges facing farmers in transporting and marketing their products.
Earlier, the state VCDP coordinator, Hajiya Habitat Isah, had encouraged farmers to seize opportunities in dried cassava chips production to gain financial freedom.

Shettima: Tinubu Firmly Devoted To Security, Stability In Gulf Of Guinea

Vice-President Kashim Shettima has stressed President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to the peace, security and stability of the Gulf of Guinea, particularly ongoing reforms in the Gulf of Guinea Commission (GGC).
He particularly noted Nigeria’s commitment to regional cooperation and to the African Union’s (AU) 2050 Integrated Maritime Strategy.
The vice-president stated this on Tuesday when he received in audience the Executive Secretary of GGC, Mr Jose Mba Abeso, and his team at the State House, Abuja.
“On behalf of President Bola Tinubu, I reaffirm Nigeria’s strong commitment to the objectives of the GGC. Nobody can undermine the role of the commission in fostering cooperation, peace and sustainable development in the Gulf of Guinea,” he noted.
Continuing, Shettima said: “As Africa’s most populous nation and unarguably the largest economy, we have interests to protect, promote, project and preserve in the Gulf of Guinea. Be reassured that some of the issues you have raised, the president will give them the desired attention. We want the Gulf of Guinea to function effectively.”
He commended the management of the GGC, assuring it of Nigeria’s “unalloyed commitment to the ideals and objectives of the commission”.
Earlier, the Executive Secretary of GGC, Mr Jose Abeso, solicited Nigeria’s support for the commission’s reform programmes aimed at expanding its membership to include all the 19 coastal states of the Gulf of Guinea, and improving peace and security in the region.
He also spoke about the need for stakeholders in the region to jointly engage insurance companies in reviewing the high premium paid for the movement of goods in the Gulf of Guinea.
Commending Nigeria’s leading role in the establishment of the Combined Maritime Taskforce in the region, Abeso sought President Tinubu’s support in rallying other political leaders in the region to operationalise the force.

President Bola Tinubu on Tuesday declared that his government has met its revenue generation target for year 2025 through non-oil sector in August.
Addressing members of The Buhari Organisation (TBO) led by former Governor of Nasarawa State, Senator Tanko Almakura, who were on a courtesy visit to him at the State House, Abuja, the president said he has met his revenue target for the year through the non-oil sector ahead of schedule.
He added that he will remain focused on Nigeria’s progress despite external pressures, including actions from US President Donald Trump.
According to him, “Nigeria is not borrowing. We have met our revenue target for the year, and we met it in August.”
Projecting confidence against international challenges, President Tinubu dismissed concerns over United States President Trump’s activities, saying: “If non-oil revenue is going well, then have no fear of whatever Trump is doing on the other side.”
