Delta Govt gets report on certificate racketeering at state polytechnic

The committee was inaugurated on March 25, 2025. The submission took place on Wednesday in Asaba, where Onyeme thanked the committee for carrying out a detailed work.

Deputy Governor of Delta State, Sir Monday Onyeme, has received the report of the committee investigating certificate racketeering and suspension of affected staff of Delta State Polytechnic, Ogwashi-Uku.

The committee was inaugurated on March 25, 2025.

The submission took place on Wednesday in Asaba, where Onyeme thanked the committee for carrying out a detailed work.

While assuring that proper action would be taken on the report, he said, “Your report is very clear and straightforward, especially as it concerns the allegations of certificate racketeering.

“Thank you, we will do an executive summary to His Excellency, the Governor for further actions based on your recommendations.”

Chairman of the Committee, Sir Christopher Osakwe, while presenting the report told the deputy governor and top government functionaries that included the Commissioner for Higher Education, Prof. Prof. Tonukari Johnbull, who witnessed the occasion, that the report details the findings of the Inter-Ministerial Committee constituted to investigate allegations of certificate racketeering and the subsequent suspension of staff of the polytechnic.

“The committee’s investigation focused on three key areas: conducting an in-depth investigation into the certificate racketeering allegations, reviewing the process leading to staff suspension, and making recommendations to ensure institutional integrity and advise on disciplinary actions,” he stated.

The Adamawa State Government has stepped up efforts to curtail land racketeering in the state.

Getting a land for building especially in Yola and urban centers of the state has long been a nightmare for many, as plots of land are often sold to one or more other buyers.

The situation has forced many innocent buyers to engage in unending war over land ownership when they should be putting up their buildings.

The Commissioner of Land and Survey, Chief Joan Sahma who spoke on the matter on Wednesday, said he was appointed with a brief to tackle the problem and he has done much in that direction.

The commissioner gave some details to members of the Correspondents’ Chapel of the Adamawa Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, who paid him a visit.

He said, “The issue of duplication of land ownership is being radically addressed. The governor has given me full powers to bring all land racketeers to order. Only this past month, we picked up a legal practitioner; a lawyer for that matter! We found him cloning our files. I said this is the type of people we must stop.

“So many of such people are now in jail. This is what the governor insist we must do, to sanitize the system and make land available to land seekers who can acquire land and be sure that the land is truly their own.”

According to him, the government is similarly reforming the process for resolution of genuine disagreements.

“We have constituted a unit for conflict resolution. We advise people to withdraw their cases from courts because it’s not court that gave them land. We want to settle land issues amicably without recourse to court prosecution,” he added.

The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to intensifying the fight against terrorism in West Africa and the Sahel, pledging stronger collaboration with regional partners to restore peace and security across the region.

Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, made the pledge on Wednesday, according to a statement released by his spokesman, Mati Ali.

According to the statement, the minister spoke at the opening of the Regional Conference on Combating Emerging Terrorist Groups and Strengthening Sustainable Security, held at the National Counterterrorism Centre in Abuja.

He warned that “terrorism, insurgency and insecurity are existential challenges that endanger our people, our economies, and our shared future”.

Badaru Abubakar placed Nigeria’s assurances at the centre of the discussion, aligning them with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritises peace as the cornerstone of prosperity.

“The Federal Government set three priorities including integrating intelligence across the region through real-time fusion and technology to track and disrupt terror networks, the institutionalisation of joint military operations with renewed push for the full operationalisation of the ECOWAS Standby Force and harmonized legal frameworks that leave no safe havens for extremists as well as tackling the root causes of radicalization by investing in education, youth empowerment, community resilience and accountable governance,” he said.

The minister added that Nigeria has positioned itself within the wider geopolitical space, stressing that regional security requires a balance of African resolve and international solidarity.

He added that the Armed Forces of Nigeria have recorded significant progress by dismantled multiple terrorists/criminal strongholds, prompting thousands of surrenders.

“Operation Safe Corridor is advancing rehabilitation and reintegration to reduce the cycle of violence and help communities heal. Nigeria supports the Multinational Joint Task Force in the Lake Chad Basin. Nigeria also upholds the Yaoundé Code of Conduct to secure land and maritime domains.”

Badaru Abubakar explained that these initiatives demonstrate how military strength, diplomacy, and community-based solutions can complement one another and serve as models for the ECOWAS region.

He thanked the United Nations, African Union, European Union, and other international partners for their continuous support, which strengthened regional capacity.

The minister urged the partners to invest in intelligence fusion platforms, provide technical support for the ECOWAS Standby Force, and fund socio-economic programmes that block extremist recruitment pipelines.
