Troops of Operation HADIN KAI have neutralised 13 terrorists in a failed ambush and improvised explosive device, IED, attack on a military convoy at Kareto in Borno State.

Lieutenant Colonel Sani Uba, Media Information Officer of the Joint Task Force, Operation HADIN KAI, said in a statement that the ambush occurred on September 3, 2025 while the troops were escorting humanitarian trucks along the Gubio–Damasak road.

He stated that the troops pursued the terrorists, exploited the area, and recovered eight AK-47 rifles, 10 AK-47 magazines, and a large cache of 7.62mm ammunition.

Other items recovered included a camel bag, several rolls of detonating cord wires used for making IEDs, as well as several primed IEDs.

“Unfortunately, a soldier was slightly wounded in action but stable, 4 MRAP tyres damaged while two of the trucks were engulfed in flames during the encounter,” the statement read.

It added that the troops have sustained deliberate operations in the general area to deny the terrorists freedom of action, while continuing humanitarian operations by providing security for relief materials, which have since been secured and moved to Damasak.

The Ogun State Alternative Medicine Board, OGAMB, has begun its herbal plantation farming on a 17-acre plot of land, comprising a variety of herbal plants and roots for local and international use.

The board’s chairman, Balogun Olaleye, stated this during the third-quarter meeting of the board, held at Oke-mosan, Abeokuta, on Thursday.

Olaleye noted that the board’s complementary role in the health sector could not be overlooked, hence the need to combat global deforestation, habitat destruction from agriculture and logging, and climate change.

He lamented that approximately 15,000 medicinal plants are at risk, especially in Africa and China, where those plants are almost becoming extinct due to over-harvesting.

According to Olaleye, the state Alternative Medicine Board would cultivate and monitor some of these plants to ensure their continued use locally and internationally and, eventually, as a source of income for the state.

He said: “There are about 50,000–80,000 known medicinal plant species worldwide; approximately 15,000 are currently threatened, and around 20 per cent of wild medicinal plant resources have already been depleted. Sustainable harvesting practices, cultivation and improved land management are crucial to mitigate this biodiversity crisis and prevent the loss of these vital natural resources.

“With the Ogun State Alternative Medicine Board’s initiative to cultivate herbal plants, some of these plants will be planted here in Ogun State and monitored to make sure that we retain them for the use of our people at the local and international levels and ultimately serve as a source of revenue for the state.”

Also speaking, the Registrar and Executive Secretary of the Board, Dr Kafayat Lawal, said the current administration’s decision to establish the board had begun to yield tremendous success, as UNICEF commended the board on the coordination of the traditional birth attendants across the state.

She affirmed that in due course, a collaborative training session would take place between UNICEF and OGAMB for traditional birth attendants across the state on more efficient practice and reporting of data in order to reduce child mortality rate in the state.

The Governor of Nasarawa State, Abdullahi Sule, has directed traditional rulers, village heads and community leaders to begin profiling all new residents in their areas as part of efforts to curb killings and kidnappings across the state.

The governor’s Special Adviser on Public Affairs, Comrade Peter Ahemba, revealed this on Thursday in Lafia while addressing journalists on recent security concerns.

Ahemba explained that the directive followed renewed attacks in Keana, Kadarko and other communities, which displaced residents and heightened insecurity.

“Governor Sule has directed security operatives to intensify surveillance, comb all criminal hideouts, and deal decisively with anyone caught,” Ahemba said.

He added that the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, alongside traditional rulers, has been mandated to ensure profiling of new arrivals to weed out criminal elements.

The government also plans to deploy technology in security operations, while warning that anyone shielding or bailing arrested suspects would face sanctions.

Governor Sule further appealed to residents to support security agencies with timely reports of suspicious movements.

On insecurity concerns around the Lafia flyover and underpass, Ahemba revealed that operatives of the Nasarawa Youths Empowerment Agency (NAYEA) had been deployed to safeguard the area.

He also cautioned politicians against premature campaigns ahead of the 2027 elections, warning that such actions contravene electoral laws and could create needless tension.

Young people in Shagari Local Government Area of Sokoto State say they may be forced to arm themselves if government security agencies continue to fail in protecting them from bandits.

The youths, in a statement led by activist Bello Bala Shagari, said they had run out of patience after months of repeated attacks, kidnappings, and killings that have displaced families and crippled farming in their communities.

Shagari, a grandson of former President Shehu Shagari, said the situation had reached a last-resort decision, stressing that self-defence may be the only way left to protect lives and property.

“We cannot keep quiet while our people are being killed and humiliated daily. Government has failed to protect us, and we may have no choice but to defend ourselves,” he warned.

The group appealed to both the Sokoto State and Federal Governments to urgently send more security personnel to Shagari and surrounding areas. 

They said communities needed action on the ground, not more promises.

Sokoto, along with Zamfara, Katsina, and Kebbi, has suffered years of armed raids and kidnappings. 

Despite military operations, rural communities say they are still abandoned to their fate, facing killings, extortion, and forced levies from bandits.

An agency under the Nigerian National Assembly, Youth In Parliament Forum, YIPF, and CAWIN Mobility Limited have signed a Memorandum of Understanding, MoU, to provide free training for 2,000 Nigerian youths on electric vehicle, EV, repairs.

The initiative is aimed at equipping young people with the technical skills needed to thrive in the fast-growing electric mobility sector, create jobs, and promote green technology adoption in Nigeria.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, representatives of both organizations expressed their commitment to youth empowerment, innovation, and sustainable transportation.

The training will cover hands-on modules in electric vehicle diagnostics, battery technology, and repair techniques, preparing participants for employment and entrepreneurship in the evolving automotive industry.

The Chairman of YIPF, Ayodeji Alao Akala said the essence of the training was to prepare the market for the impending revolution in the automobile industry.

“What we’re doing now is training programs and showing that whatever markets we are bringing in, whatever collaboration we are doing with the COWIN, we already have a prepared market. We already have a prepared infrastructure for this kind of collaboration. So what we’re doing here today is preparing the market.

“We’re paving a path for the future because the future is now is changing to electric cars because of the ozone layer and because of carbon emission,” Akala noted.

On his part the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of CAWIN Mobility Limited, Wayne Ji said that signing of the MoU was not just a symbolic event but a promise to the youth, environment and to Nigeria’s economic growth.

“We all know that in China electric vehicles have led a new round of industrial revolution and significantly promoted economic development and employment.

“Therefore we hope to introduce the electric vehicle industry to Nigeria as well by training of 2,000 youths on EV repairs and engineering. This initiative is not merely about technical know-how, we will train 1,000 skilled technicians who can immediately serve in workshops, service centers, and local garages, ensuring that electric vehicles on Nigerian roads receive proper care and maintenance.

“At the same time, we will train 1,000 young engineers in close collaboration with Nigeria’s university system,” Ji stated.

He said the training will go beyond repairs but also focus research, design, battery management, software, integration, and the long-term development of the EV industry.

According to him, the 2,000 youths will form the backbone of Nigeria’s future EV workforce from garage to the research lab, and from maintenance to manufacturing.

Also speaking at the event, the Director General of YIPF, Tony Nwulu said the collaboration reflects the shared commitment to youth empowerment, sustainable mobility, and national development and a testament to what is possible when innovation meets purpose.

“Today, we are not just signing documents. We are creating opportunities for young people. We are opening a pathway for renewable energy and sustainable development.

“Through this partnership, we are achieving two historic milestones. The first is the free training of 2,000 Nigerian youths in electric vehicle (EV) repairs and maintenance. This will equip our young people with the skills and experience needed to service electric vehicles, which are already making their way into Nigeria.

“One of the biggest challenges in the coming years will be ensuring that there are skilled hands to maintain these vehicles when they develop faults. By preparing ahead, we are ensuring Nigeria is not left behind,” Nwulu said.
