Nigeria and dozens of other nations across the world will on Sunday, September 7, witness a lunar eclipse.

According to NTA, the eclipse is expected to last approximately 83 minutes, which will start around 8 PM Nigerian time.

Scientists state that the eclipse will be observable across most of Africa, with some regions able to view the entire event.

Some of the countries to experience the eclipse including Nigeria, Ghana, Cameroon, Gabon, Equatorial Guinea, Benin, Togo, Niger, Chad

The westernmost areas, however, may miss parts of the early penumbral or partial phases due to the Moon rising closer to or during totality.

Scientists confirm that a lunar eclipse is safe to view with the unaided eye.

A total lunar eclipse occurs when the Sun, Earth, and Moon are aligned in space, with Earth in the middle, casting its shadow on the Moon.

Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State has blasted his predecessor, Nasir El-Rufai, asking him to stop politicizing insecurity.

Speaking on Saturday in Kaduna at the presentation of ‘Where I Stand’, a book written by the late Sheikh Abubakar Mahmud Gumi and translated into Arabic by Sheikh Ibrahim Jalo Jalingo, the governor stated that firearms alone cannot end banditry.

DAILY POST recalls that El-Rufai in a television interview on August 31, criticised what he described as a “misguided non-kinetic” approach to insecurity, alleging that the Office of the National Security Adviser, ONSA, coordinates ransom payments and incentives to bandits.

“What I will not do is to pay bandits, give them a monthly allowance or send food to them. Non-kinetic is nonsense. We are empowering bandits. That’s what is going on.

“My position has always been that the only repentant bandit is a dead one. Let’s wipe them out, bomb them, reduce them to nothing. And then the five percent that still want to be rehabilitated can be rehabilitated,” El-Rufai had said.

Responding, Sani disagreed, attributing banditry to poverty, unemployment, and neglect of rural communities are at the heart of banditry.

“Insecurity can’t be resolved solely through the use of firearms. Whoever makes such a claim is only playing politics. We must fear God and stop deceiving the people because that approach will not work,” Sani said.

Human rights activist, Deji Adeyanju, has condemned the alleged targeting of the social media account of Omoyele Sowore by the Department of State Services (DSS).

The secret police has formally petitioned social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to delete a post by Sowore, describing the content as a national security threat and a violation of Nigerian law.

In a statement on Sunday, Adeyanju described the action as “unacceptable” and an attack on democracy.

“The targeting of Omoyele Sowore’s account by the DSS is unacceptable and should be condemned. Every citizen has the right to freely share their opinions, even when those opinions do not align with those in authority. The use of state power to silence and intimidate individuals because of their views is an attack on the very freedoms that sustain a healthy democracy,” he said.

Adeyanju noted that Sowore has remained a victim of intolerant governments, yet continues to express his views with courage.

He stressed that Sowore, as a former presidential candidate, deserves respect for his commentaries on governance, regardless of how uncomfortable they may be for those in power.

Human rights activist and former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress, AAC, Omoyele Sowore, has vowed to continue his criticism of the Nigerian government despite fresh attempts by security agencies to clamp down on his social media accounts.

Sowore, in a statement on Sunday via his X handle, alleged that the Department of State Services, DSS, wrote to X demanding the deactivation of his account within 24 hours.

He claimed the move followed an earlier protest at the Federal High Court and the Ministry of Justice by alleged pro-government demonstrators who called for his arrest.

According to him, the action is “unconstitutional” and amounts to “a desecration of national dignity.”

He accused the DSS and the police of persistent harassment, including arrests, seizure of his passport, and what he described as trumped-up charges.

The activist also alleged that he was recently assaulted by armed police officers, and that the federal government had falsely accused him in court of terrorism financing.

Sowore maintained that the DSS move to pressure social media platforms into silencing him was an attempt to “export national disgrace to the US,” insisting that such measures would not stop his campaign against President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

“The struggle against these criminals continues ceaselessly with or without a Twitter account, with or without Facebook, and whether I am in jail or outside of it. The struggle continues,” he declared.
