Vice President Kashim Shettima says posterity will praise President Bola Tinubu for taking hard but necessary decisions to better the lots of Nigeria.

Shettima also reiterated Tinubu’s commitment to diversifying the Nigerian economy, describing him as a leader with the political will to take bold decisions.

This is coming as the Federal Government has considered a task team to conceptualise and operationalise good architecture in Nigeria in the bid to standardise the country’s architectural framework.

The Vice-President stated this on Thursday at the State House, Abuja.

He cited the President’s recent trip to Brazil which resulted in the signing of five Memoranda of Understanding covering aviation, foreign affairs, science and technology, and agriculture, saying they were deliberate and intentional steps by the President in diversifying the nation’s economy.

“In President Bola Tinubu, you have an ally, a friend who grew up in the same ecosystem as you, who speaks your language of business and commerce, who understands the economic terrain, and most importantly, who has the political courage,” he said.

The Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria, MDCAN, has advocated for a living wage for doctors across the country.

It said a minimum wage was not sustainable for not only doctors but all health workers amid the economic challenges in the country.

According to the MDCAN, the continuous decline of Nigeria’s economy was taking a heavy toll on healthcare delivery and the general wellbeing of citizens.

The association raised the concern on Thursday during its 14th Biennial Delegates’ Meeting and Scientific Conference held in Enugu with the theme: “Otanisi Psychosis: The Mental Health Implications of the Dwindling Socio-Economic Fortunes of Nigerians.”

National President of MDCAN, Prof. Muhammed A. Mohammed, linked the mass migration of medical personnel to the Western world to Nigeria’s poor economic climate, which he said had led to low remuneration of health workers and infrastructural decay in hospitals.

He explained that the biennial conference provides an opportunity for members to review progress, assess challenges, and recommend solutions.

On the exodus of doctors, popularly known as “japa,” he noted: “Human migration predates history, but every cycle comes with its specification. In 1985, there was also a wave of migration, but we were able to put things in place to reverse it.

“The current situation is different, it is multifactorial. Insecurity is there, welfare is there.

“We advocate that remuneration, which is key, be increased. Not just for consultants or doctors alone, but for all healthcare workers.”

He stressed that Nigerian doctors deserve a “living wage” rather than a minimum wage, urging the government to see improved welfare as a patriotic investment that could encourage those who have left to return.

Representing the Minister of State for Health, Dr. Iziaq Adekunle Salako, the Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Medical and Allied Health Sciences, Enugu State, said the federal government was taking steps to address the shortfall in medical personnel.

“The Ministry of Health is addressing the issue by doubling the quota in medical schools.

“We cannot manufacture doctors except by training them. The policy now is to equip medical schools with stronger capacity so they can train more students without compromising quality,” he said.

In his welcome address, the Chief Medical Director of the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, UNTH, Ituku Ozalla, Prof. Obinna Onodugo, urged MDCAN members to work harmoniously for better healthcare delivery.

Also speaking, the Grand Patron of Enugu Council of Traditional Rulers and Traditional Ruler of Ihuokpara Community in Nkanu East, H.R.M. Igwe Sir F.O. Nwatu, expressed gratitude to MDCAN for a free medical outreach in his community.

“I was left speechless because it was massively unprecedented,” Igwe Nwatu said.

Earlier, the Vice President I of MDCAN and Chairman of the Local Organizing Committee, Prof. Apollos Chidi Ndukuba, drew parallels between Nigeria’s present economic hardship and the austerity era of the 1980s.

“Anyone in his forties or fifties will recall the early 1980s when Nigeria experienced severe economic crunch, leading to starvation and visible malnutrition. In Igboland, it was called Otanisi—a transliteration of austerity.

“Today, Nigerians are again being thrown into similar hardship.

“That is why we chose the theme ‘Otanisi Psychosis’ to highlight the mental health implications of this economic decline,” he explained.

The chairman of the Medical and Dental Consultants Association, UNTH, Ituku Ozalla chapter, Dr. Uchenna Dilibe stated that the theme of the Biennial Conference was carefully chosen due to the economic downturn being witnessed in Nigeria today and its consequences not only to medical personnel but to all and sundry.

“His words, “The theme of the conference is a carefully chosen word regarding the prevailing downturn of the economy.

“It is a well thought out topic. Because this economic downturn has affected people so much that people have started misbehaving and acting irrationally and some people are even taking their lives because they can no longer cope.”

He also reiterated that the infrastructural deficit in the various government hospitals, as well as the remuneration of doctors and other health practitioners should be looked into for better service delivery.

The monarch gave the warning when members of the Eze Ndigbo in Ijesaland, led by their leader, Eze Ifeanyi Achiever, paid him a courtesy visit at his palace on Wednesday.

Oba Haastrup, who also reaffirmed the hospitality of his people towards non-indigenes, stressed that Ijesaland remained a welcoming home to all residents regardless of origin.

The Ijesa paramount traditional ruler also commended the Igbo community in the area for their harmonious coexistence with his subjects and urged them to continue fostering unity and peace.

“The people of Ijesaland value peaceful cohabitation. I commend you for the cordial relationship with our people and encourage you to sustain it,” the Owa Obokun stated.

He, however, condemned the formation of parallel associations and titles within the Igbo community, calling for reconciliation and unity among the different groups.

Addressing traders specifically, the monarch warned against exploiting consumers through excessive price increases or engaging in the sale of fake goods, which he described as detrimental to both buyers and sellers.

“You must not take advantage of the people by inflating prices or selling substandard products. Fairness in trade is essential for trust and lasting relationships,” he cautioned.

In his remarks, Eze Ndigbo, Ifeanyi Achiever pledged the loyalty of the Igbo community in Ijesaland to the throne of the Owa Obokun Adimula.

Lauding Oba Haastrup’s leadership, Eze Achiever noted that peace and rapid transformation had characterised Ijesaland since the monarch’s installation and enthronement.

NAF spokesman, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, disclosed this in a statement, which revealed that the mission was executed on September 3, 2025.

According to Ejodame, the operation followed credible intelligence and surveillance which revealed a newly identified terrorist enclave west of Zuwa in the Sambisa general area.

“A carefully planned and executed air interdiction mission struck the hideouts harboring fighters and commanders responsible for recent hostilities around Bitta,” the statement read.

He added that the strikes destroyed key structures critical to the terrorists’ operations, crippling their capacity to launch further attacks.

Ejodame further stressed that the successful air interdiction serves to support efforts of ground troops in joint counter terrorism operations aimed at dismantling terrorist networks in the North-East.

Yobe State Government plans to establish four remand homes in some local government areas of the state aimed at reducing overcrowding in the existing custodial and correctional centres.

The State Commissioner for Sports, Social and Community Development, Barma Shattima, who stated this, also said that the four additional remand homes and custodial centre for child suspects who are awaiting trial would be established in Damaturu, Nguru, Gashua and Geidam towns.

He noted that the Potiskum remand home was the only functional home in the state as the ones in Nguru and Gashua were dilapidated.

He added that the proposed remand homes would offer inmates access to education, vocational training and other resources to help them become productive citizens upon release.

The commissioner lamented that the state government is spending over N14 million annually on the maintenance of the Potiskum remand home.
