The Nigerian government is expected to meet with leaders of the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) today, as it aims to resolve the nationwide warning strike by the association. The strike has already disrupted health services across the country.

The Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Ali Pate, confirmed the meeting as the nurses’ strike enters its third day.

The strike commenced Wednesday following the expiration of a 15-day ultimatum issued by NANNM on issues relating to poor pay, staff shortages, unpaid allowances, and unsafe working conditions.

Hospitals in various states across the country have experienced significant staffing shortages, creating gaps that doctors are finding it difficult to fill.

Morakinyo Rilwan, president of NANNM has expressed lack of confidence, stating that an engagement with the Federal government may not lead to a resolution
“Negotiation continues on Friday between the association and the Ministry of Health, but I don’t see any positive outcome. We will do the seven-day warning strike to the end,” Rilwan said.

A financial expert and educator, Kalu Aja, has criticised Nigeria’s handling of its oil sector, describing the country as a “money miss road” nation due to its inability to capitalise on global trade opportunities.

In a post on X on Friday, Aja noted that the United States has threatened secondary sanctions on India for purchasing oil from Russia, a move that could disrupt a major portion of Russia’s oil exports.

According to him, the development presents a strategic opportunity for Nigeria, which maintains strong trade relations with India.

However, Aja noted that Nigeria lacks the capacity to take advantage of the situation, pointing out that Nigeria continues to import crude oil products like India despite being Africa’s largest crude oil exporter.

He said: “The US has threatened secondary sanctions on India for buying Russian oil

“About 50% of Russia’s crude exports go to India, and India’s crude imports from Russia account for about 41% of its total oil imports. These are significant trade numbers.

“If the US can prevent Russia from exporting discounted oil to India, that will hurt Putin’s war effort in Ukraine

“What a glorious opportunity for Nigeria, whose trade with India is significant, to step in with a crude oil for import swap deal with India

“But alas, Nigeria has no spare capacity from its oil fields to export; it’s stuck at 1.6mbpd and can’t even supply its local refineries with crude. Nigeria, Africa’s largest crude oil exporter, imports crude oil just like India.

Police arrest FCTA Director over alleged forgery

Acting on the order of an Abuja High Court, the Nigeria police have arrested Mr Joseph Eriki, the Director of Investigation and Prosecution of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA),

Eriki was arrested alongside another person, Mr Boniface Agwu.

The duo are 1st and 3rd defendants in a criminal charge filed against them by the federal government on an alleged criminal conspiracy, criminal trespass and forgery.

Other defendants in the case are at large.

Justice Suleiman Belgore of the FCT high court sitting in Garki division had on 27th May issued a bench warrant for the arrest of the defendants for their arraignment on a 9-count charge of alleged land grabbing.

The Prosecutor, David Kaswe had told the court that the defendants were on administrative bail and had been duly informed of the charges against them but that all efforts to bring them to court had been abortive.

At the next adjourned date on June 4th, counsel for the 1st, 2nd 3rd, 5th and 9th defendants, C.S. Ekeocha and E.E. Apeh promised to produce the defendants for arraignment.

Justice Belgore restated his earlier order for the arrest of the defendants despite the promise given by some of the counsel.

After four consecutive adjournments, the court fixed October 30th for their arraignment.

The police have now arrested Mr Eriki and Mr Agwu in the FCT, currently in custody and will remain there till October 30 for their arraignment.

Others charged alongside the FCTA director are Boniface Agwu; Ikechukwu Kanu; Donatec Electrical Company Limited; Super Structure Limited; Weatherfield Engineering; Marine Service Limited; Asher Information Services Limited; Prince Isaac Omoluwa; Nwaimoneye Augustine Onyisi and Sarajo Aliyu, Ogbole Michael.

The defendants were alleged to have unlawfully entered Plot 461 – 470 and 486-496 belonging to Etha Ventures and put up structures with the intention of defrauding Etha Ventures.

According to the prosecution, to actualise their intent, the defendants fraudulently secured a consent judgment in suit number FCT/HC/CV/240/2018 that gave the title of Plot 1406 (461-470 and 486-496) Sabon Lugbe East Layout, Abuja to Super Structures Limited.
