Build warehouses in Achebe Airport to meet cargo status – Monarch urges Soludo
The Governor of Anambra State, Prof Chukwuma Soludo has been urged to raise the status of the Chinua Achebe International Airport as a cargo airport by constructing warehouses in the facility.
The traditional ruler of Umueri Kingdom in Anambra East Local Government Area, Igwe Ben Emeka who made the call during a pre-event press briefing to mark this year’s new yam festival of his community also charged the governor to construct a road leading into the airport from the community.
The monarch during the briefing said for the airport to attain the status of an international airport, or a cargo airport, there must be regular flights, and warehouses must be built for the storage of wares upon arrival.
“Soludo is doing well and very well too. Our people say if one does well, he should be rewarded by another term in office. He has done several works in our community, but a lot more needs to be done.
“He has also employed our people and given appointments to people from our place here. But we want to say that the Umueri airport, which is now Chinua Achebe International Cargo and Passenger Airport, which is in our community, is currently not doing so well.
“We want the governor to pay attention to it and make flights regular in the airport. He should build ware houses, or concession it to individuals to build because it is a cargo airport. We need warehouses in the airport so that when goods come in, it can be housed there. That is how it is in Lagos and other places with functional cargo airports, and we will want it to be so here.”
Speaking about access road into the airport, the monarch who is also an entrepreneur thanked Soludo for constructing the major road into the airport, but lamented that indigenes of his community where the airport is sited have no access to it, except they go through other local governments.
“We gave out 1,010 hectares of our community land to Obiano for the airport. You can hardly see any community that has such land in Anambra, but what is not good is that when we want to go to the airport, we go through some other local government.
“There is an access road that is just four kilometers to the airport from here, it was started by the administration of Governor Obiano. So we are calling on him (Soludo) to help us complete the road. It has now become a bush and criminals now use it.
“So we are calling on him to come to the aid of our people, so that we can always access the airport through our community. We have missed flights severally because we have to go turn around to enter the airport, where as it is just close to us here,” the monarch lamented.
He announced that this year’s New Yam festival would be held on Saturday, September 6, saying that the festival is a culture and identity of the people of Umueri.

The former Inspector General of Police (IGP), Solomon Arase, is dead.
The immediate past Chairman of the Police Service Commission (PSC) reportedly died at Cedarcrest Hospital in Abuja on Sunday.
Arase, who was the 18th Inspector General of Police, previously served as the head of the Criminal Intelligence and Investigation Bureau, the Force’s top intelligence unit, before his appointment as IGP.
Born on 21 June 1956 in Owan West Local Government Area of Edo State, Arase joined the Nigeria Police Force on 1 December 1981 and retired on 21 June 2016, having reached the mandatory retirement age of 60.
A Political Science graduate of Ahmadu Bello University, he also earned a Law degree from the University of Benin and a Master’s degree from the University of Lagos.
In January 2023, the late President Muhammadu Buhari appointed him Chairman of the Police Service Commission. He held that position until June 2024, when he was removed by President Bola Tinubu.
Arase was widely respected for his reform-driven leadership and dedication to the welfare of police personnel.
As IGP, he spearheaded key reforms, including the establishment of the Intelligence Response Team, the Complaint Response Unit to tackle police misconduct, and the Safer Highway Patrols initiative, which enhanced security for road users nationwide.
Following his retirement, Arase remained active in security reform, especially in the areas of election security and police neutrality.
He was also passionate about education, youth empowerment, and social development. Through the Solomon Ehigiator Arase Foundation (SEAF), he promoted academic excellence by awarding scholarships to high-achieving Nigerian students—particularly children of fallen police officers and youths from underserved communities.
In 2025, SEAF awarded scholarships to 29 students across disciplines such as Medicine, Dentistry, Engineering, Criminology, Political Science, and Business Administration. The Foundation described the initiative as a reflection of Arase’s lifelong values—integrity, service, and excellence.
The scholarship programme was designed not only to provide financial aid but to nurture future leaders and contribute to the creation of a more just and equitable society.
Confirming the passing of the former IGP, Solomon Arase, the family, in a statement signed by his son, Solomon Arase Jnr., on Sunday, said: “The Arase family of Benin City, Edo State, hereby announces the passing of Solomon Ehigiator Arase, PhD, CFR, NPM, FDC, former Inspector General of Police.
“He passed away at about 9 a.m. on Sunday, 31 August 2025, at Cedarcrest Hospital, Abuja, after a brief illness. He was aged 69.
“After a distinguished career as Inspector General of Police, Dr Arase also served as Chairman of the Police Service Commission (PSC). He was a member of the Body of Benchers.
“The family seeks the understanding and prayers of friends, associates, and well-wishers during this difficult time, as they make the necessary arrangements for his obsequies, which will be announced in due course.”

Opeifa apologized at a press conference at the NUJ FCT secretariat in Abuja on Sunday.
The apology comes after NUJ FCT condemned the unwholesome treatment meted out to its members who were covering the recent Abuja-Kaduna train derailment incident.
The NUJ demanded a public apology from Opeifa over the incident.
In his apology on Sunday, Opeifa said he was carried away in the heat of the moment.
“I wish to offer my apology for the regrettable remarks I made, which were not only directed at a seasoned journalist but also reflected unfavourably on the NUJ FCT and the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists, NAWOJ.
“Acting in the heat of the moment under pressure, and in my attempt to ensure safety, I made certain unkind statements. For this, I take full responsibility, and I am sorry.”
Chairman of NUJ FCT, Grace Ike, had called for calm among journalists over the incident.
Recall that six passengers were injured after the Abuja-Kaduna rail derailed in Jere on Tuesday.

To boost the ongoing effort in the fight against banditry, kidnapping, and other criminal activities across Katsina State, the state government has approved a major investment in new security assets by approving the procurement of 700 motorcycles, 20 Hilux vehicles.
These approvals were granted during the state executive council’s 12th regular meeting, chaired by Governor Malam Dikko Umaru Radda as part of efforts to ensure seamless governance.
Briefing journalists after the meeting, the Commissioner for Information, Bala Salisu Zango; Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Nasiru Mu’azu Danmusa; and the Director-General (Media), Government House, Maiwada Dan Mallam, highlighted the key approvals.
Danmusa explained that the approvals aligned with Governor Radda’s firm stance that security remains the administration’s first, second, and third priority.
“The government has made its position very clear; security is the topmost priority. We are determined to deal with insecurity in its totality,” he stated.
According to him, the government carefully considered the state’s geographical challenges, noting that many rural and vulnerable communities were difficult to access with conventional vehicles.
He said that to address this challenge, the state government approved the procurement of hundreds of motorcycles to enable security operatives to effectively patrol such hard-to-reach areas.
In addition, he said the state government also approved the procurement of essential tactical equipment, including security arms, machines, tools, clearing kits, and operational manuals.
According to him, these items will support the state Community Watch Corps in their collaboration with the operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) and other security agencies to enhance joint operations across the state.
Danmusa further revealed that the state government also ratified the purchase of eight fully armoured Toyota Land Cruiser Buffalo pick-up trucks, designed to strengthen mobility and provide operatives with secure access to areas prone to ambush by bandits.
“These measures are part of ongoing efforts to reinforce our community-based security initiatives and to provide conventional agencies, including the Police, DSS, and Civil Defence, with the necessary tools to combat insecurity more effectively,” the commissioner added.
Reaffirming the government’s commitment, he stressed, “We are fighting these bandits in every corner. We are determined to continue pushing until Katsina becomes a safe state, where economic growth and development can flourish.”
He concluded by appealing to citizens for their continuous prayers, support, and encouragement, while assuring them of the government’s unwavering resolve to restore lasting peace and security across the state.

The Akwa Ibom State Director of NOA, Mkpoutom Mkpoutom, made the appeal in Uyo at the weekend during a sensitization programme organized by the Federal Information Center with focus on the milestones of Tinubu’s administration.
Mkpoutom, who was represented by Mrs Atim Otoyo, Deputy Director Planning, Research and Strategy, recalled that Tinubu on assumption of office on May 29, 2023, had embarked on ambitious reforms and initiatives that would better the lives of Nigerians.
He said the President’s focus is on revitalizing Nigeria’s economy by swiftly addressing the fuel subsidy crisis that had long plagued the nation’s finances.
According to him, by removing fuel subsidies, resources are now reallocated towards critical areas such as infrastructure and social welfare programs.
“This bold decision, although met with public discontent due to rising fuel prices, was a necessary step towards fiscal responsibility,” he said.
Mkpoutom also stated that security remains a paramount concern in Nigeria, stressing that Tinubu’s administration has prioritized the issue since the onset of his administration.
“His administration has focused on strengthening the military and security agencies to combat terrorism, banditry and separatist movements. This includes boosting funding for the Armed Forces and implementing community policing strategies to foster better relationships between law enforcement agencies and local communities.
“President Tinubu’s administration has championed various projects aimed at improving transportation networks, electricity supply, and public amenities as well as initiating programs to create technological hubs to promote digital literacy among young Nigerians,” the NOA official said.
