Tinubu Presides Over FEC Meeting 

* Council mourns ex-FCT minister, Chris Olubolade 

* President swears in Kalu as NASSCOM member

President Bola Tinubu on Thursday presided over the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting at the State House, Abuja. 

Before the commencement of the FEC meeting at the Council Chambers, the Council observed a minute of silence in honour of ex-Minister of both the Federal Capital Territory, and Police Affairs, Navy Captain Chris Caleb Olubolade (rtd), who passed on March 10, 2025.

Present at the Council meeting are Vice-President Kashim Shettima; Chief Of Staff to the President, Hon Femi Gbajabiamila; National Security Adviser (NSA), Mallam Nuhu Ribadu; Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Dr (Mrs) Didi Walson-Jack; and Permanent Secretary, Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Emmason Imabong.

Also in attendance are other cabinet members, including the Ministers of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun; Budget and Economic Planning, Senator Atiku Bagudu; and Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, among others.

Earlier, President Tinubu sworn in Hon. Nnanna Uzor Kalu as a member of the National Assembly Service Commission.

The president had on May 5, 2025, administered oath of office on the Chairman of the National Assembly Service Commission (NASC), Dr. Saviour Enyiekere, and 12 other commissioners.

Kalu represented Aba North/Aba South Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives during the 5th National Assembly (2003–2007) on the platform of the Alliance for Democracy.

The brief ceremony was anchored by the Director of Media in the Office of the President, Mr. Abiodun Oladunjoye.

ASR Africa Donates N250m Administrative Block to Al-Qalam University in Katsina

The Abdul Samad Rabiu Africa Initiative (ASR Africa), through its Tertiary Education Grant Scheme (TEGs), has donated a state-of-the-art administrative block worth N250 million to Al-Qalam University in Katsina State.

Built and equipped with cutting-edge equipment by ASR Africa, the administrative structure was donated to the College of Allied Health Sciences of the university on Thursday.

The administrative block, which was proposed by the management of the institution to support the establishment of the college, has lecture theaters, classrooms, 18 offices for academic and administrative staff, as well as a conference hall. 

According to ASR Africa, the facility is designed to strengthen the university’s capacity as it prepares to offer degree programmes in Nursing Science, Public Health, Radiography, Physiotherapy, Optometry and Medical Laboratory Sciences.

Speaking during the inauguration of the project, the Managing Director of ASR Africa, Dr Ubon Udoh, said 30 institutions have so far benefitted with grant awards ranging from N250 million to N2 billion.

He explained that the initiative was designed to bridge infrastructure gaps and foster academic excellence across tertiary institutions in Nigeria and other African countries.

He noted that the partnership between the ASR Africa team and the project management unit of the university ensured that the project was completed within the stipulated time.

He said the project reaffirms the commitment of the Chairman of ASR Africa, Alhaji Abdul Samad Rabiu, in supporting local solutions to local problems across Africa. 

Udoh expressed satisfaction with the completed project and appealed to the beneficiaries to ensure proper use of the facility.

He praised the management of Al-Qalam University for their support during the construction of the project. 

In his remarks, the Katsina State Governor, Dikko Umaru Radda, appreciated the Chairman of ASR Africa, Alhaji Rabiu, for the investment in the state’s educational sector. 

He stressed that education is vital for the growth of any society, the reason he has prioritized education in his administration agenda.

He urged the management of the university to safeguard the administrative block and its equipment against vandalism, adding that other philanthropists should emulate ASR Africa.

Earlier, the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Professor Nasiru Musa-Yauri, thanked the management and staff of ASR Africa for finding the institution worthy of the donation. 

He said that the choice of the project and its location were strategic as the institution plans to extend its academic programmes to include the college of Allied Health Sciences.

He hinted that in a bid to commence full utilization of the edifice, the university has also formalized partnerships with major healthcare facilities across the state to support clinical training for students at the proposed college of Allied Health Sciences.

Court of Appeal Affirms Aiyedatiwa’s Election

The Court of Appeal, Akure Judicial Division, on Thursday affirmed the victory of Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo State in the November 16, 2024 election.

The Ondo State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal on June 4 upheld the victory of Aiyedatiwa, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and declared petitions against him as “speculative.”

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), African Democratic Congress (ADC), Allied People’s Movement (APM) and Social Development Party (SDP) had filed appeals, alleging that the tribunal did not accord proper analysis to details of the evidence and exhibits submitted to the tribunal.

The three-man panel of Justice Nimpar Yargata, Justice K.I. Amadi and Justice I.M. Sani, unanimously struck out the appeals, for not substantiating the claims of non-compliance with the Electoral Act.

The court said that the appellants could not substantiate their allegations against the election and APC.

The court noted that the petitioners failed to prove that there were over voting and electoral flaws in various polling units, wards and local government areas where the election took place.

The appellate court stated that the petitioners could not present credible witnesses at the tribunal to back up their claims of widespread irregularities in the various polling units across the state.

The court, therefore, imposed a fine of N1.5 million against the petitioners.

Reacting to the judgment, Aiyedatiwa described it as a welcome development, commending the Appeal Court justices for painstakingly going through the cases and delivering detailed and unanimous judgments.

“I give glory to Almighty God who orchestrated this journey from the beginning and used the good people of Ondo State.

“Over 366,000 electorate gave us their mandate on November 16, 2024 to continue governing this state as the seventh democratically elected governor.

“That mandate was validated by the tribunal and has now been reaffirmed by the Appeal Court.

“While some political parties tried to overturn the people’s decision through the backdoor, the judiciary has fulfilled its role by upholding the choice made by the majority of voters across the 18 local government areas of the state,” he said.

Aiyedatiwa also appreciated his deputy, Olaide Adelami; his lawyers, APC leaders and members for their support.

The governor also extended his gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for ensuring a level playing field for all parties. (NAN)
