Doctors and consultants at the Federal University of Health Sciences, Otukpo (FUHSO), Benue State, have embarked on an indefinite strike over the non-payment of eight months’ salary arrears, effectively shutting down operations at the institution’s teaching hospital.

Sources within the hospital blamed the current situation on years of alleged maladministration by successive leadership figures, including former Vice Chancellor, Professor Innocent Ujah, and former Chief Medical Director, Professor Silas Ochejile.

Both men, who are of Idoma origin, are accused of various forms of corruption, ranging from contract inflation and job racketeering to financial mismanagement.

“This university has been in shambles from the very foundation. And ironically, it is our own people, Idoma professors who are destroying it,” said a concerned staff member who spoke on condition of anonymity.

“From Professor Ujah’s alleged lacklustre and corrupt leadership to Professor Silas Ochejile’s tenure marked by job racketeering, inflated contracts, and unpaid salaries, the rot runs deep.”

Hospital staff alleged that during Professor Ochejile’s tenure, essential medical supplies were unavailable, with the pharmacy reportedly unable to provide even basic drugs like paracetamol.

They also claimed that doctors lacked proper office furniture and conducive working conditions, despite the institution receiving annual budgets running into billions of naira.

The crisis has continued despite the appointment of a new Chief Medical Director, Professor Teddy Agida, who insiders say is overwhelmed by the scale of the challenges he inherited.

“He met an empty treasury and is struggling to find funds to settle outstanding debts and begin much-needed renovations,” said another hospital staffer.

In order to avert preventable accidents and hazards to their lives and that of passengers, commercial motorcycle riders in Ogun State have been asked to put their safety first and refrain from operating during downpours. The State Chairman of the Riders and Owners of Motorcycles Organisation (ROMO), Olusola Shotayo, made the appeal over the weekend.

The State Chairman of the Riders and Owners of Motorcycles Organisation (ROMO), Olusola Shotayo, made the appeal over the weekend.

Sholebo noted that while it is necessary to work hard and meet their daily targets, life was more important and should always be prioritized.

He encouraged all members to be law-abiding, safety-conscious, and considerate to other road users, especially during the challenging weather.

The Chairman said, “We understand the hustle and the need to meet daily targets, but no gain is worth the loss of life.

“The rainy season brings slippery roads, poor visibility, and increased danger. We advise all riders to suspend operations during heavy rainfall and always use safety gear”.

Meanwhile, Sholebo assured that the ROMO leadership will continue to engage relevant authorities to ensure better working conditions and safety for its members.

Ogun State Government, in an effort to prevent frequent conflicts between farmers and herders during the dry season, held a stakeholders’ meeting with Fulani leaders from the state and neighboring regions.

The meeting, held in Abeokuta, weekend, brought together all Serikis Fulani, zonal leaders, and representatives of pastoralist communities.

The Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Inter-Ethnic Affairs, Alhaji Hadi Sani, explained that the meeting was to address urgent inter-ethnic concerns, encourage harmonious cohabitation, and develop a long-term plan for preventing conflict.

Sani underlined the importance of leveraging the rainy season to prepare for the dry season, a period historically marked by heightened tensions between farmers and herders disputes.

He said, “In this meeting, we are moving towards abandoning some cultural decisions that are not suitable for our peaceful coexistence. Those are the agenda I’m pushing for this meeting and I want to push it to the extent that we put it in writing and we all sign.

“Leadership has to do with being fair in decision and we are moving towards taking those firm decision that would give us peace in our society.

“We are using this opportunity to call on all Fulani leadership to deliberate on a concrete and sustainable modality that will ensure smooth and peaceful coexistence between farmers and herders”.

He admitted the widespread nature of such conflicts across states like Benue, Plateau, and Edo, disclosing that Ogun is strengthening the non-kinetic approach, focusing on dialogue, sensitization, and the development of Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) to guide conduct between communities.

Responding, the Seriki Fulani of Abeokuta and South-West Zonal Chairman of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN), Muhammad Kabir affirmed the commitment of Fulani leadership to peaceful coexistence.

Kabir commended the state government for appointing a dedicated fellow as a Senior Special Assistant and praised Hadi Sani’s tireless efforts in bridging ethnic divides and fostering mutual understanding.

“We summoned all our Serikis and leaders from across Ogun and neighboring states for this crucial conversation. We are discussing how to internally resolve crises before they escalate and will be signing an MOU that reflects our commitment to peace.

“We will work hand in hand with community leaders Obas, Baales, CDA chairmen, and farmers’ associations to prevent farmland encroachment and ensure peaceful relationships,” he said.

He added that the proposed MOU, which is expected to be submitted to the state government and security agencies, will detail roles, responsibilities, and prohibited actions to ensure all parties are held accountable in upholding peace.

The Coalition of South East Youth Leaders, COSEYL, has berated the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP for what it called serial injustice against the region, describing the zone’s marriage with the main opposition party as nightmarish.

The group urged leaders of the party in the region to seek political alignment outside of the party ahead of the 2027 general election, maintaining that the region has no future in the PDP.

It observed that besides what it termed the mistreatment of the region over the position of National Secretary zoned to it, the party had no plan to remedy the injustice of its failure to zone the party’s 2023 presidential ticket to the region ahead of the 2027 election.

This comes amid the decision of the PDP National Executive Committee, NEC, meeting, which endorsed Samuel Anyanwu as the National Secretary, as against SKE Ude-Okoye, being projected by the South-East.

COSYL, in a statement entitled “PDP has Used and Dumped the South East: Time To Dump the Party,” issued by its President-General, Comrade Goodluck Ibem, on Monday, condemned the development.

“We note with deep sadness that a party co-founded by one of the likes of the late Dr. Alex Ekwueme, has continued to disrespect, use, and dump the South East region without regrets and redresses since the Jos 1998 Convention, when Ekwueme, was thrown under the bus in the presidential primary election for the 1999 election.

“For the record, despite Ekwueme’s fate at the Jos convention, the South East gave PDP and Chief Olusegun Obasanjo 3.2 million votes, representing 78 percent of votes they cast in the 1999 presidential poll.

“In 2003, PDP got 4.5 million votes from the region towards Obasanjo’s re-election, the presence of Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, a revered Igbo hero on the ballot notwithstanding.

“The South East voted massively again for PDP/Umaru Yar’Adua in 2024 even when Chief Mike Ahamba, SAN, was Muhummadu Buhari’s running mate.

“PDP and Dr. Goodluck Jonathan got 4,985,246 in the South East in 2011 as opposed to 76,228 votes secured by Alhaji Atiku Abubakar of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) despite Atiku running with Senator Ben Obi as vice presidential candidate.

“Even when several other traditionally PDP states worked against the party in favour of the APC in 2015, Dr. Jonathan’s votes in the region were so massive as against Buhari’s abysmal performance that the former President punished the region mercilessly for eight years. The region was denied an opportunity to even head a paramilitary agency like the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, while he chose a rail line project to Niger Republic over the rehabilitation of the Eastern Rail Corridor to benefit the South East,” the group recounted.

Continuing, COSEYL maintained that PDP’s woes amounted to ‘Nemesis Pro-Max’; retribution at work for the injustice done to the South East region.

It recalled that whereas the PDP 2015 Post-Election Review Committee chaired by former Deputy Senate President, Chief Ike Ekweremadu, recommended the zoning of the party’s presidential ticket to the North in 2019 as a remedy for the perceived injustice to the region in 2015, “the PDP failed a moral test by refusing to zone the ticket to the South East in 2023 or take necessary steps to do things right with the region ahead of 2027.

“Let’s make no mistake about it, the PDP’s woes of today is karma at work, given the injustice ingrained in their failure to zone the 2023 presidential ticket to the South East region.

“This bad fate forced the likes of Mr. Peter Obi and Engr. Dave Umahi left the party and resulted in the electoral loss in the last general election.

“Therefore, let no one be fooled; the South East has no future in the ungrateful and unjust party.

“It is high time South East PDP leaders took pragmatic steps to opt out of a party that has no regards for the region and chart a fresh political trajectory and realignment for the dignity, political redemption, and development of the region,” the statement concluded.

President Bola Tinubu has said no Nigerian is too big to enjoy the dividends of democracy under his administration.

Tinubu said the works of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, has shown that no community or Nigerian that can’t the benefit from the dividends of democracy.

He spoke during the commissioning of a newly constructed in Giri area of Abuja on Monday.

The president was represented by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas.

He insisted that the projects embarked on by the Minister has made his administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda real and to Nigerians.

He said: “Honourable Minister, your words speak for themselves in every corner of the FCT. From the fast-paced districts of Maitama, Jahi, Katampe, Wuye, Mabushi, and the likes, to the satellite towns of Gwagwalada, Kwali, Bwari and Abaji, and growing districts such as Kabusa, Keti, Sheretti and now Giri, your leadership has brought progress closer to the people.”

He stressed that the newly constructed road would open up Hiri District and the FCT.

Speaking, FCT Minister of State, Dr Mariya Mahmoud, said the newly constructed road was an example of the Tinubu’s administration’s commitment to infrastructural development.

Mahmoud said the road is a pointer to plans of opening up under-served communities to economic activities within the area councils.

Also, Dauda said that the project was awarded in November 2024 to provide access roads to the district, planned to be an institutional area.

He stated that the proposed main sewage treatment plant for the city at Giri was also located within the district.
