Owolabi Salis, a politician and lawyer, has become the first Nigerian to travel to space.
Salis was aboard the Blue Origin’s NS-33 mission, which took off from West Texas on Sunday, June 29.
The 10-minute flight, which crossed the Kármán line also had Carl Kuehner, Jim Sitkin, Leland Larson, Freddie Rescigno Jr., and Allie Kuehner on board.
It reached a peak altitude of 105.2 kilometres.
Salis, before embarking on the trip, said that the mission was “more than just a trip into space”.
He described it as a “spiritual journey, a call to inspire future generations”.
Salis has previously entered the history books as the first Black African to travel to both the Arctic and Antarctic in the same season.

Governor Mohammed Bago of Niger State has declared a state of emergency on the General Hospital Minna, citing the urgent need for a total overhaul of the dilapidated facility.
This is contained in a statement on Tuesday in Minna by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Print Media, Aisha Wakaso.
Wakaso stated that the governor made the declaration during the weekly State Executive Council (SEC) meeting, noting that the hospital, which was built over 50 years ago, had deteriorated significantly.
Bago added that the facility was no longer fit to serve the medical needs of the state’s growing population.
“The hospital has been overstretched for many years, and its current state poses a serious challenge to effective healthcare delivery in the capital and beyond”, he added.
He therefore, immediately constituted a committee of special advisers and relevant stakeholders to carry out a full assessment of the hospital and propose practical solutions.
“So, following their recommendations, plans are now underway to demolish the current structure and begin the reconstruction of new units and wards in phases.”
The governor explained that during the period of reconstruction, essential departments and services would be temporarily relocated to select primary healthcare centres across the state to ensure continuity in care.
Bago, who had once paid an unscheduled visit to the hospital revealed that the bench he sat on at the eye centre had been there since he was a child.
“We have to be honest with ourselves. The facility, in its present condition, can no longer serve its purpose. It is overstretched, outdated, and unsafe.
“What we need now is a modern, functional, and efficient health facility that reflects our vision for a healthier Niger,” the governor said.
He added further that the decision was part of a broader plan to revamp the entire healthcare sector in the state, ensuring that citizens have access to quality and dignified medical services.
“Our administration is committed to building systems that work. Health is a priority, and we are determined to ensure that people feel the impact of government through visible improvements in healthcare delivery,” he added.
The governor reassured the public that all necessary steps would be taken to minimise disruption during the transition period and to maintain access to essential services until the new facilities were completed.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has expressed concern over various interpretations given to the provision of Section 65 of the Electoral Act 2022 on the review of election results.
INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, stated this at the second quarterly consultative meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) on Tuesday in Abuja.
He noted that pursuant to INEC powers to issue regulations, guidelines and manuals to give effect to the provisions of the Electoral Act and for its administration, the commission is working on a supplement to the Regulations and Guidelines to provide clarity on the review of declaration and return at elections.
The chairman added that as soon as the commission takes a decision, the supplementary Regulations and Guidelines would be uploaded to the INEC website and other platforms for public information.
Yakubu stated: “As we approach the by-elections, the off-cycle governorship elections and ultimately the 2027 general election, the commission is concerned with the various interpretations given to the provision of Section 65 of the Electoral Act 2022 on the review of election results.
‘‘Pursuant to our powers to issue regulations, guidelines and manuals to give effect to the provisions of the Electoral Act and for its administration, the commission is working on a supplement to the Regulations and Guidelines for the conduct of elections 2022 to provide clarity on the review of declaration and return at elections.
“As soon as the commission takes a decision, perhaps as early as this week, the supplementary Regulations and Guidelines will be uploaded to our website and other platforms for public information.”
Yakubu informed the RECs that there are policy and procedural issues already determined by the commission which they need to implement without prompting from the headquarters in Abuja.
He noted that some of them are already doing so, but they need to intensify their effort.
According to him, “You do not need an elaborate conference or workshop to build the capacity of your staff to improve on their knowledge of new policies and practical innovations introduced by the commission to improve electoral service delivery to Nigerians.
“You also need to provide us with information on your plans to enhance voter access to polling units by decongesting some of them or in other areas such as the cleaning-up of the voters’ register, deepening our engagement with electoral stakeholders at state and local government levels, the management of electoral logistics and election security.”

Irate Youths Protest Vandalises Emir’s Palace over Incessant Kidnappings in Kwara

Palpable tension erupted yesterday in Lafiagi town in Edu Local Government Area of Kwara State as the irate youths staged protest over unending kidnappings in the town and other parts of the Kwara north senatorial district of the state.
During the protest, the irate youths reportedly vandalised the some parts of the palace of the Emir of Lafiagi.
The latest kidnap in the town was the reported abduction of a prominent resident of Lafiagi andagrochemical dealer, popularly called Alhaji Chemical on Sunday and which led to the protest by the youths.
Alhaji Chemical was reportedly taken from his home in Taiwo area around 1:00 a.m. on Sunday by suspected Fulani bandits.
According to information, the attackers came on motorcycles and later subdued the local vigilance group members.
However, in view of the protest, security operatives have been deployed to the Lafiagi town to maintain peace and order.
A high-powered government’s security delegation visited Lafiagi yesterday following early morning tensions that culminated in an attack on the office of the NDLEA and a foil attempt to torch the Emir’s palace.
The tension in Lafiagi was related to different community issues, including security operations targeting hard drug dealers.
A statement issued in Ilorin last night signed by the Senior Special Assistant to Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq on Security Matters Alhaji Muhyideen Aliu said: “The security delegation comprised the Commissioner of Police CP Ojo Adekimi and Brigade Commander Brigadier General Ezra Barkins.”
“They(delegation) were received by the chairman of the local government Abdullahi Bello; Development Officer for Edu, Alhaji Haruna Likpata; Commissioner for Youth Development Shehu Ndanusa Usman; and Chairman of the Teaching Service Commission Bello Taoheed Abubakar.”
“The protest in the morning was related to recent arrests of suspected drug dealers.
“The protesters took advantage of the anxiety around recent security breaches to launch an attack on the NDLEA office, where they burnt three vehicles and motorcycles, released three suspects, and carted away substances seized from the dealers.
“They also attempted to attack the Emir’s Palace because, according to them, he did not stop the NDLEA from arresting the suspected drug dealers and smokers,” Alhaji Aliu said.
“This is sheer criminality, and we condemn it totally. The soldiers and other security forces have been able to restore calm in Lafiagi town. We also visited the palace, where we addressed everyone on the need to maintain peace and order.”
“They thanked His Excellency Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq for the quick intervention. Normalcy has returned, and further security deployments have been made by the police and the army.”
“It is important to state that no life was lost in the Monday morning incident. We caution people against taking laws into their own hands,” he added.

CAC Unveils AI-powered Business Registration Portal
The Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) has announced the pilot take-off of its new Artificial Intelligence (AI)-powered registration portal.
The Registrar-General of the CAC, Malam Hussaini Magaji, in a statement, made the announcement during the 2025 Stakeholders Forum held in Port Harcourt.
Magaji described the initiative as a major milestone in Nigeria’s business facilitation drive.
He said the upgraded portal marks a complete overhaul of the Company Registration Portal (CRP), with advanced features designed to simplify and speed up business registration.
According to him, the new system allows for instant name reservation approvals, likening the ease to creating an email account.
The registrar-general said that the AI-powered platform could suggest available alternatives to business names and approve them immediately.
“Another innovation is the ability to register a business using only the National Identification Number (NIN) of a director or proprietor.
”With an ambitious target of completing business registration and certificate generation within 30 minutes, subject to real-time NIN validation,” he said.
Magaji acknowledged the possibility of occasional delays due to external data confirmation from the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC).
He assured Nigerians that a contingency solution using AI-powered photo ID matching had been developed to address such challenges.
Speaking on CAC’s expanding partnership with private sector actors, the registrar-general said the commission was reviewing over 100 Super Agent applications, including requests from outside the country.
He specifically mentioned the Nigerian Inter-Bank Settlement System (NIBSS) as one of the strategic collaborators under consideration.
Magaji also hinted at upcoming digital features, including Two-Factor Authentication and OTP Verification for all transactions to prevent unauthorised changes to company records.
He further said that a CAC Mobile App would be launched in the last quarter of 2025 to enable users to carry out transactions and track progress on the go.
On service reforms, Magaji said that the commission would implement a review of certain service fees effective August 1, to sustain quality service delivery and support ongoing digital transformation.
The event was attended by key stakeholders, including Cordelia Eke, Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Port Harcourt Branch and Mr Sebastian Essien, Chairman of the Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators of Nigeria (ICSAN).
Mr Dogala Sakpege, Chairman of the Nigerian Association of Small and Medium Enterprises (NASME), Dr Mechi Brown, Director of Industry at the Rivers State Ministry of Commerce and Industry, among others were also present .
During the interactive session, a technical team from CAC was present to address customers’ complaints and provide real-time solutions to registration and compliance challenges.(NAN)

The Federal Government has injected more than N65 billion into basic health to support the continued implementation of the Basic Health Care Provision Fund (BHCPF) in 2025.
This followed the resolutions of the 11th Expanded Ministerial Oversight Committee (MOC) meeting in Abuja on Monday, chaired by the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Muhammad Ali Pate.
The MOC said that N32.88 billion from the first-quarter 2025 release has been approved to cover BHCPF implementation for both the first and second quarters of the year.
According to the MOC, the allocation, split evenly at N16.44 billion per quarter, aligns with the 2020 BHCPF Guidelines and is expected to ensure the continuity of critical health financing activities.
A further N32.88 billion was also approved for third-quarter implementation, with disbursement expected by the end of August or upon the release of funds by relevant authorities.
The Committee reaffirmed its commitment to timely and efficient disbursement mechanisms to strengthen Nigeria’s primary healthcare system and move the country closer to achieving Universal Health Coverage.
It also formally approved the revised BHCPF Guidelines 2.0, which are slated for dissemination before the end of the third quarter.
According to the minister, the updated guidelines aim to enhance implementation coordination and accountability across all levels.
The MOC also confirmed the phased rollout of the Mini District Health Information System (Mini-DHIS) beginning in July 2025.
