There was jubilation in Umuahia on Tuesday as about 600 youths hit the streets in celebration of the judgement delivered by a Kenyan court in favour of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB.

A Kenyan Court had last week ruled that Nnamdi Kanu’s abduction and rendition from Kenya to Nigeria in 2021 was unlawful, unconstitutional and a gross violation of his fundamental rights.

The court also awarded the sum of 10 Million Kenyan Shillings as damages against the Kenyan Government.

Rising from an early morning meeting at Awka Hall in Umuahia on Tuesday, members of the All Igbo Youth Forum urged the Federal Government to without delay, release Nnamdi Kanu.

The All Igbo Youth Forum members who marched round some streets in the Abia State capital in celebration, said the judgement delivered in far away Kenya has further provided reasons for the Federal government to free Kanu.

Dancing and singing songs of joy, the youths said there was no further reason to keep Kanu in detention.

The President General of All Igbo Youth Forum, Chinedu Obilolor appealed to President Bola Tinubu to free Kanu, the same way Yoruba youth leader, Sunday Igboho, was freed by the Federal Government.

He alleged that politicians from the South-East have refused to identify with Nnamdi Kanu each time his case came up in court, while using his name to score cheap political points.

The President General of the All Igbo Youth Forum, Obilolor who advised Tinubu to deal directly with the youths in the South-East and not governors and lawmakers, informed him that failure to deal with youths on issues concerning the interests of the region would lead to his defeat in the zone in the 2027 election.

According to him, youths from the entire South-East region last week took a common stand after their meeting in Ebonyi State where, according to him, a decision was taken to work for the overall interest of the Igbos.

“Youths from Igbo land are not happy that our brother is still there up till now.
Now, the the youths, we are pleading with Mr. President to release this young man to us,” Chinedu Obilolor said.

Nigeria’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu has affirmed the country’s commitment to entrenching democracy in Africa.

She made this known when the Republic of Malawi’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hon. Nancy Gladys Tembo, paid her a courtesy visit at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Tafawa Balewa House, Abuja.

Odumegwu-Ojukwu stated that promotion of democracy was one of the pillars of the foreign policy approach of the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu-led administration codenamed the “4Ds” which comprises the key elements of Democracy, Development, Demography and Diaspora.

She pledged Nigeria’s support to Malawi in the country’s forthcoming general elections in September this year.

Odumegwu-Ojukwu said: “I know too that the Nigerian Government would support Malawi in its general elections coming up in September this year. In our President’s 4-Ds foreign policy thrust; Democracy is a major plank. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is committed to seeing democracy entrenched in African States.”

The Minister who was informed of definite plans by Malawi to open its Embassy in Abuja this year, said it was a welcome development stressing that it would bolster the bilateral relationship between both countries.

She regretted that the two Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) signed between the both countries in 2012 had not been activated but expressed the optimism that the East African country’s Embassy in Abuja would enhance their bilateral ties.

“We have two MOUs that need to be reactivated. There were signed in 2012 after President Goodluck Jonathan visited Malawi. So, we’re looking forward to your opening the Embassy.

“Nigeria got Independence in 1960 and Malawi followed in 1964. It’s surprising that Nigeria and Malawi have not been able to concretise our excellent bilateral relationship. I think your opening a resident diplomatic mission here will herald a new era in our country to country engagements,” she said.

Odumegwu-Ojukwu also urged Malawi to take advantage of Nigeria’s Technical Aids Corps and the bridge the gap caused by the shortage of trained teachers in its basic education system and any other areas the country might require manpower.

She said: “You just talked about lack of trained teachers; Nigeria can provide technical assistance to Malawi under the South South Cooperation.

“So, our Technical Aids Corps is there to assist by sending technical manpower. Nigeria pays these volunteers. Countries like Namibia are already enjoying this assistance. We recently approved their request for 40 nurses.”

Earlier, Malawi’s Foreign Affairs Minister, told Odumegwu-Ojukwu that she took advantage of the 32nd Afreximbank Annual Meeting 2025 in Abuja to visit her and build closer relationship with Nigerian authorities.

Aside, announcing plans by her country to open its Embassy in Abuja, Tembo noted that Malawi was determined to strengthen bilateral relationship with Nigeria.

The visiting minister said: “The Afreximbank meeting was an opportunity for people to meet. My country is looking forward to bilateral cooperation with Nigeria. Already, we are comfortable with Nigerians doing business in Malawi. We want to strengthen bilateral cooperation with Nigeria. Afreximbank has helped us to awaken our relationship.”

Tembo who praised Nigerian businessmen in Malawi highlighted that adequate trade had been going on between Nigeria and Malawi, though not reported.

Therefore, she invited Nigerian investors to prospect in the country’s rich mineral deposit.

“Over the years, we were relying solely on agriculture but we’ve realised that we have huge endowments of minerals. So, we invite investors in mining; Nigerians inclusive. We recently established mining regulatory agency,” the Malawian Minister said.

She described her visit to Nigeria as exciting, and looked forward to receiving Nigeria’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Odumegwu-Ojukwu, in Malawi.

The envoy was joined on the visit by Secretary for Foreign Affairs, Amb. Mwayiwawo Polepole and Director of Africa, Francis Mphatso Mponda.

Kogi West Senator, Sunday Karimi, has said the synergy between the Department of State Services, DSS, and the Joint Task Force has been instrumental in the recent decimation of criminal networks operating in Kogi West.

Karimi commended the DSS for partnering the JTF and vigilantes to rid his senatorial district of kidnappers and criminal elements.

Addressing newsmen in Abuja, the lawmaker said the rise in kidnappings was possibly politically motivated criminality to destabilize his zone.

But the lawmaker said the sustained operations are essential to “achieving lasting security,” stressing that the “effectiveness of vigilantes rest on actionable intelligence provided by the DSS”.

He commended the efforts of the National Security Adviser, NSA, Nuhu Ribadu in “ensuring strategic synergy between the security organisations and local vigilantes nationwide”.

He also called for a legislation that would lead to the formation of forest guards as planned by President Bola Tinubu.

The senator also reiterated his call for continued cooperation among all security agencies, underscoring the need for a unified approach to safeguard Kogi West.

Karimi’s remarks align with recent statements from Kogi State’s security leadership, including Special Adviser on Security to the governor, Commodore Jerry Omodara (Rtd.), who has vowed to root out banditry and kidnapping from the state’s forests.

Omodara harped on strategic measures to fortify border security and enhance community-based vigilance, while urging residents to support local security efforts with timely intelligence.

His advocacy reflects growing public demand for decisive action, following reports of over 30 abductions in the district within a single week, a crisis he previously described as a “coordinated assault on peace”.

Governor Hyacinth Alia of Benue has assured of adequate security for National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members posted to the state.

The governor said the state had deployed additional security personnel to vulnerable areas to enhance and ensure the safety of the corpers throughout their service year.

He said that the state had experienced insecurity through unprovoked attacks on communities in recent times, but insisted that his administration would not rest on its oars to end it.

The governor said his administration had consistently engaged with security agencies and other relevant stakeholders to strengthen security intervention and provide lasting solutions to the persistent attacks in the state.

Alia encouraged the corps members to proceed to their places of primary assignments without fear.

The governor, however, warned government agencies and private sectors to desist from rejecting corps members posted to their organisations.

He said that the policy of non-rejection of corpers by the state government was still being enforced, adding that any organisation that defied the directive would be sanctioned.

In her speech, the NYSC Coordinator in the state, Mrs Veronica Garba, congratulated the corps members for successfully completing the orientation course.

“I commend your resilience and good conduct throughout your stay on camp, and I expect you to take that behaviour to your place of primary assignment,” Garba said.

She urged them to embrace selfless service and dedication to meet the aspirations of their host communities by respecting their culture, traditions, and adding value to the hosts.

Yobe State Governor, Mai Mala Buni, has tasked the State Emergency Management Agency, SEMA, to extend flood preparedness efforts to the 17 local government areas of the state.

This is coming as the agency with support from UNICEF, launched a two-day flood preparedness training based on the 2025 Seasonal Climate Predictions, SCP, by NiMet and the Annual Flood Outlook, AFO, by NIHSA.

SEMA in a statement noted that the workshop which held across the three zones of Gashua, Potiskum, and Damaturu from 28th June to 1st July, brought together 100 key flood stakeholders each from ten high-risk areas of Bade, Jakusko, Karasuwa, Nguru, Potiskum, Fika, Gujba, Damaturu, Bursari, and Geidam.

“The objective is to equip local actors with actionable insights from SCP and AFO forecasts; develop LGA-specific contingency plans; strengthen coordination as well as build inclusive local response systems that protect lives and livelihoods before and when floods strike,” SEMA said.

The agency’s Executive Secretary Dr. Mohammed Goje, in the statement stressed the importance of collaboration among all stakeholders, urging for the adoption of global best practices alongside local innovations to mitigate the impact of flooding.

He expressed appreciation to UNICEF for its timely support in aligning with Governor Buni’s flood response priorities, and encouraged other development partners to also align their efforts with the state’s comprehensive flood response plan.
