Niger LG Boss Suspended over Request for Autonomy Enforcement

One week after dragging the Niger State Government to court over the tenure and funding of local government, the Chairman of Chanchaga Local Government Area of the state, Mr. Aminu Ladan, has been suspended from office.
Ladan had dragged the state government and four others before a Federal High Court in Abuja seeking the enforcement of the Supreme Court judgment on funding and tenure of local governments.
The matter came up for mention last Friday and was sent to the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) for assignment to a vacation Judge.
Ten out of 11 councillors in the local government council yesterday signed the suspension letter which was released to the media in Minna, the state capital.
Only the majority leader, Mr. Ibrahim Isah Gommna from Minna South ward, did not sign the suspension letter.
The chairman was accused of among others gross misconducts and mismanagement of councils resources, failure to present to the legislative council the statement of income and expenditure of the council as provided by the law.
In addition, he was said to have violated laid down protocols for the sale of land in the local government area as well illegal award of contracts, incompetence, and non-adherence to the rule of law.
The nine-point allegations against Aminu Ladan also include his failure to set up the Finance and General Purposes Committee as provided by law, as well as gross incompetence.
THISDAY learnt that the decision of the councillors has been sent to the state House of assembly.
Efforts to reach Ladan was abortive as all his cell phones were switched off.
Also, his legal team declined to comment on the latest development opting to only say that the counsel were meeting on the issue and will release a statement shortly.

More than 150 villagers kidnapped from different communities in Zamfara State are being held by bandits in terrible conditions, according to a video shared online.
Security analyst, Bakatsine shared the update on X on Tuesday.
He said the victims, including men, women, and children from Madaro, Maguru, Kyambarawa, Janbako, and other villages are being held in the forest by a group of armed bandits.
In the video, which was posted by a bandit who identified himself as “Ibrahim Musa 099” on TikTok, the victims were seen tied up and chained.
Many looked sick, weak, and hungry, while children and their parents cried for help. The bandit used the video to call for talks with the government.
“150+ villagers from Madaro, Maguru, Kyambarawa, Janbako and others all in Zamfara, are in bandits captivity. Chained, tied, starving and sick.
“Bandit “Ibrahim Musa 099” posted the video on TikTok calling for govt talks. Children and parents cry in the forest with no food or medicine,” Bakatsine wrote.
Authorities are yet to release an official statement on the incident.

Speaking on ‘The Morning Brief’, a programme on Channels Television on Tuesday, the activist said Gbagada was named after him by the people in the early 90s because of his contribution to the community.
According to him, people from all walks of life in the community had benefitted in one way or the other from his benevolence, hence they named the bus stop after him.
“Once upon a time, I used to live at the bus stop,’ Charly Boy recounts how Charly Boy Bus Stop at Gbagada was named after him in the early 90s.
“People who were at Gbagada at the time felt it was just the right thing to name a bus stop after me because I contributed to that community. The military, pensioners, okada riders and other people benefited from me.
“I gave scholarships out to people. I don’t like talking about what I have done and what I have not done but I tried for my community at the time I was there. So because of what I had done, the people thought it wise to name the bus stop after me, and that’s how it all started,” he stated.

Onanuga, in a post on his X handle, expressed surprise at the criticism from some Nigerians over the presidential rewards, questioning why the gesture was being met with disapproval.
He drew a comparison with the BBNaija reality show, pointing out that its winner receives a N150 million grand prize.
“When you remember that Multichoice, the organizer of the BBNaija reality show, is offering the winner ₦150 million grand prize, you wonder why some Nigerians are unappreciative of President Tinubu’s rewards to the Super Falcons,” Onanuga wrote. “President Tinubu has rewarded excellence, creativity, hard work, soccer artistry, and the undying Nigerian spirit.”
DAILY POST reported President Bola Tinubu offered each player a cash reward of $100,000 and each coach and support staff member $50,000.

The Ekiti State Government has disclosed that 90 people were arrested and prosecuted for violating environmental sanitation laws during the July edition of the state-wide sanitation exercise.
Commissioner for Environment, Mrs Tosin Aluko-Ajisafe, made this known while addressing the press in Ado-Ekiti.
She explained that the offenders were apprehended by the sanitation enforcement team at various locations and subsequently transported from the Okesa axis to the Fasuyi area for prosecution.
Aluko-Ajisafe expressed displeasure over attempts by some commercial drivers to obstruct the officials during the enforcement operation.
She cautioned motorists, tricycle and motorcycle operators against unnecessary movement during the monthly exercise, stressing that such actions jeopardize the effectiveness of the programme.
“The monthly sanitation exercise is aimed at improving public health and maintaining a clean environment. We urge union leaders to sensitize their members to comply with the law rather than confront officers carrying out their legitimate duties,” she stated.
The commissioner appealed for greater cooperation from transport operators and residents alike, adding that the government remains committed to enforcing environmental regulations across the state.
