The Chairman of Lau local government council of Taraba State, Nigeria Silama Jatau, has refuted allegations that he deliberately frustrated the planned turbaning ceremony in Sanwi Chiefdom, describing the claims as baseless and politically motivated.

In a statement issued by his office on Tuesday, Jatau responded to accusations by the Yandang Youth Development Congress (YYDC), which had alleged that the chairman acted maliciously and unilaterally to halt the traditional event.

According to the statement, the decision to postpone the turbaning was based on a directive from the Taraba State Bureau for Local Government, Traditional and Chieftaincy Affairs.

A circular, dated February 19, 2025, had suspended the installation of all District and Village Heads pending ongoing administrative reviews and peacebuilding efforts in the state.

“The Chairman merely conveyed the directive as required of his office. He does not possess the constitutional authority to override state instructions,” the statement clarified.

Addressing claims that the chairman acted hypocritically by accepting the traditional title of Danmadamin Lau, the statement explained that the title was conferred before the February 19 directive and carried no administrative authority. The situation, it stressed, differs significantly from the Sanwi Chiefdom’s turbaning, which falls under suspended appointments.

Jatau also rejected allegations of ethnic marginalization and political bias against the Yandang people, asserting that his administration has been inclusive, with deliberate representation of all ethnic groups, including the Yandang, in governance and development programmes.

On claims that he blocked the establishment of a police outpost in Didango Rhobi, the statement said the chairman has consistently supported security agencies in maintaining law and order across the council

While calling for calm and responsible dialogue, Jatau urged the YYDC and other stakeholders to avoid politicizing administrative issues or fanning ethnic sentiments.

He reaffirmed his respect for the Sanwi Chiefdom, its traditional ruler, Pastor Dr. Haniel Hinlewheni Banti, and all peace-loving citizens of Yandang land.

“The postponement of the turbaning ceremony, though regrettable, was executed in compliance with a state directive and in the broader interest of peace and due process,” the statement read.

The Ogun State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Adijat Adeleye, has warned orphanage homes in the state against putting up children for adoption without informing the government.

Adeleye, who insisted that the orphanages lack the power and authority to give out babies for adoption, cautioned that anyone found in the act would be made to face the full wrath of the law.

Speaking to newsmen in her office at Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, the commissioner stressed that any action taken without the approval of the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development is void and equivalent to child trafficking and kidnapping.

She disclosed that the state government had revoked licenses of private homes over sharp practices and irregularities, but over 30 reapplied after fulfilling the requirements.

“At some point this year we had to revoke all licenses of private homes because we discovered that there are sharp practices going on, even between some staff in the ministry and some private homes.

“They all had to come back after due diligence being done on them to reapply. No home, no orphanage, no private home has the power or the authority to put a child up for adoption without coming to the Ministry of Women Affairs.

“If you have an adoptable child, then, you have to reach out to the ministry and the process is done here. The Department of Social Welfare is the only one empowered under the law to put up a child for adoption.

“Any other thing done otherwise is null, void and that is tantamount to kidnapping and child trafficking,” she said.

Adeleye explained the process of adoption saying adopting a child in the state is not up to N500,000.

“The entire process for adoption in Ogun State as we speak is not up to N500,000. You get your form, fill it and when we have a child that fits into your description, we would call on you and then, start the legal aspect of it up to the 21-days publication until you get the temporary order and after some days you get the final order.”

The commissioner urged the public to act as their brother’s keeper and report any injustice, gender-based violence, or children spotted wandering the streets to the ministry or the closest police station.

“For some, we are able to reconcile them back with their family. But for those we can’t reconcile back, the government is more than able and ready to take care of them, send them to school, and give them a meaningful future,” she added.

Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang has emphasized that there is no local government area in the state that is under the control of bandits and terrorists.

Mutfwang made the assertion during an interactive session with journalists at the New Government House, Little Rayfield, Jos, on Tuesday where he briefed the media on steps his administration has taken in the face of insecurity in the state.

The governor emphasized that despite pockets of violence witnessed in some local government areas, notably Riyom, Bokkos, Bassa and Mangu, the government has made progress as against what is being reported and put out in the media.

He noted that contrary to what the outside world is made to believe, Plateau State is relatively safer than other states in the North like Zamfara, Niger, Sokoto, Nasarawa, Katsina and Kebbi.

Mutfwang explained that when he was sworn in on May 29, 2023, he immediately set up a security committee to look into the lingering issues of insecurity in the state and find a way to mitigate the situation, noting that the committee has been working around the clock to make sure insecurity in the state is seriously improved.

He also promised a revamped Operation Rainbow to complement the efforts of Operation Safe Haven, the task force set up by the military to maintain peace in the state.

Former Governor of Nasarawa State and chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Tanko Al-Makura, has declared his full support for the newly appointed National Chairman of the party, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda.

Al-Makura made this known in an open letter on Tuesday in Abuja, describing the emergence of the new APC national chairman as a reflection of the party’s collective resolve to embrace unity, renewal and stability.

He commended the APC National Executive Committee (NEC) and President Bola Tinubu for ratifying the new leadership, describing the decision as a demonstration of political maturity and the party’s capacity for internal self-correction.

“This is not merely a leadership transition,” Al-Makura stated.

Igbo Community Association, ICA, Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Abuja, has joined in opposition against the bill currently before the Senate seeking to permanently elevate the Ooni of Ife and the Sultan of Sokoto as the exclusive Co-Chairmen of the Traditional Rulers Council.

DAILY POST recalls that the bill, which has passed second reading in the Senate, is generating controversy, with both the Ohanaeze Ndigbo and the Middle-Belt Forum kicking against the bill.

In a statement signed on Tuesday by Engr Ikenna Ellis-Ezenekwe, President General ICA, and Mr Mazi Emmanuel Onah, Secretary General, the group said it would resist the bill.

According to the statement, the bill has a potential for ethnic and social unrest.

“It smacks of insensitivity towards the ethnic diversity of Nigeria,” the Igbo group stated, urging the National Assembly to retrace its steps.

“The leadership of the National Assembly should rethink and avoid returning Nigeria to the days of institutionalized bigotry and federally-funded marginalization.

“We the Igbo will resist it. We will join all willing and good minded ethnic groups to resist this boldfaced disrespect to other ethnic groups in Nigeria.

“The Sultan of Sokoto is not a traditional ruler. He is a religious figure. The Kanuris are not under the traditional umbrella of the Ooni of Ife or the Sultan of Sokoto. Neither do all the Igbos.

“The ethnic groups that populate the north central region and the south south geopolitical regions are not under the traditional rulership of the Ooni of Ife or Sultan of Sokoto,” it stated.

ICA cautioned that Nigeria is a country still recovering from the mistakes of the past and that the National Assembly must not take the country back to those days

“This beautiful country comprises three major tribes. The Hausa, the Yoruba and the Igbo. The National Assembly must respect and appreciate this reality.

“Our demand is for the three major tribes of Nigeria to be represented as the Chairmen of the National Traditional Rulers Council.

“We demand for members of the National Assembly to voice out against this unfolding injustice,” the group further stated.

YNC president, Dr Adetola Obiwole, who said they were in Nigeria with a medical team to provide services to some underserved communities, urged the National Assembly to effect the necessary constitutional amendments to allow for Diaspora voting.

“We restate our unalloyed support for the President, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu and we are using this medium to urge the National Assembly to speed up work on legislations that would guarantee diaspora voting,” she said.

General Secretary of YNC, Prince George Sotade declared the support of Nigerians in Diaspora, particularly, the Yoruba nation for the President.

He said; “We don’t need to talk too much. There is no vacancy in the Villa. Anybody running around is just doing that to bring more votes for us, for Asiwaju. The TSG is doing a good job in getting votes for Asiwaju.

“This visit is to let the world know that the Yoruba nation in the US and by extension all Nigerians in the US are behind Asiwaju.”

Director General, TSG, Dr Umar Tanko Yakasai thanked the group for coming to give back to the country.

“Some Nigerians when they travel, they forget home and think that they are in developed countries and so don’t want to associate with the rest of us here,” he said.

Yakasai praised them for their works in the US, saying it was unfortunate that people tend to focus on the few bad eggs giving Nigeria a bad name in other countries as opposed to the majority of hardworking Nigerians doing great in their various fields.

He recalled how the group also supported Tinubu in 2023, thanking them for remaining consistent in their beliefs.

Yakasai urged them to mobilize to come home and vote, saying every vote counts.

He also called on medical personnel in the Diaspora to develop an advanced mentorship programme for young Nigerian medical professionals in the country, with a view to halting medical tourism.
