The Nigeria Customs Service, NCS, has alerted Nigerians to concerns raised by the Government of the United States of America on the need for Nigerians to desist from misusing entry visas granted by the U.S. through activities inconsistent with the stated purpose of travel and visa classification.

NCS disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday signed by its spokesperson, Abdullahi Maiwada.

The service urged Nigerians to note that security vetting for visa applicants does not end upon entry into the United States.

US authorities continuously monitor the activities of visa holders, and visas can be revoked if holders are found to have violated US immigration protocols, import/export guidelines, or other laws.

“Furthermore, Nigerians travelling to the US are also reminded to declare at the point of exit or entry excess cash above the minimum threshold of 10,000 US dollars or its equivalent and ensure that prohibited items are not included in their baggage.

“It is pertinent to also note that passengers are encouraged to be law-abiding citizens and be of good conduct within and outside Nigeria. Intending passengers to the United States should know that whoever commits fraud in any jurisdiction will face legal consequences under both U.S. and Nigerian laws.

“The Nigeria Customs Service wishes to reaffirm that it is working with the U.S. Mission in Abuja to ensure that Nigeria meets the criteria to avoid enlistment into an expanded visa ban that will deny entry to well-meaning Nigerians wishing to travel to the U.S. for their lawful business endeavours,” NCS stated.

The Ogun State House of Assembly has passed a resolution calling on the state government to adopt and implement supportive measures for the promotion of sign language interpretation to enhance the inclusion of persons with disabilities in public life.

The passage of the resolution titled “H.R No. 132/OG/2025 – Call for the Inclusion of Sign Language Interpretation in State Government Programmes to Promote Inclusivity for Persons with Hearing Impairment” followed a debate by the lawmakers on the desirability of the proposed initiative.

Opening the debate on the motion leading to the passage of the resolution on Tuesday, the sponsor, Babatunde Tella, noted that the inclusion of sign language interpretation in state government programmes would reinforce the government’s commitment to upholding the rights of persons with disabilities as enshrined in national and international human rights frameworks.

Other lawmakers, including Honourables Omolola Bakare, Kashamu Rasheed and the Minority Leader, Lukman Adeleye, urged the state government to mandate organisers of all programmes, including executive, legislative and judicial functions, to have a certified sign language interpreter present to communicate with the deaf and mute.

They also called on all relevant ministries, departments and agencies, including the Ministry of Information and Strategy and the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, to ensure compliance with the resolution.

Former Osun State governor, Olagunsoye Oyinlola, has argued that instead of the “Renewed Hope” promised during the 2023 campaign, Nigerians are currently experiencing a period of renewed agony under the Tinubu-led administration.

Oyinlola stated this on Tuesday while featuring on Frontline, a current affairs programme on Eagle 102.5 FM, Ilese Ijebu, and monitored by DAILY POST in Abeokuta.

The retired Nigerian Army general was governor of Osun State from May 29, 2003 to November 26, 2010.

Assessing the current administration, Oyinlola expressed deep concern over the state of the nation, accusing the government of failing to deliver on its promises.

“When he was campaigning, he promised a Renewed Hope. What we are seeing now is nothing short of bad governance. The economy is in terrible shape, and it’s affecting every Nigerian,” he said.

Recall that last week, the Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, and the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in the state endorsed the re-election of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2027.

The endorsement followed a stakeholders’ meeting at the Government House in Oke-Fia, Osogbo.

Oyinlola, while admitting and not distancing himself from the endorsement, described it as a strategic political move and not a declaration of ideological alignment or trust.

He pointed to widespread poverty, insecurity, and the deteriorating quality of life as evidence that the administration has not only fallen short but has worsened conditions for ordinary citizens.

“We have a very bad economy, bad security, and hard-biting poverty. The common man cannot afford basic medication. We are also plagued by religious tension, war, banditry, terrorism, and insurgency. What we have is renewed agony not renewed hope,” he declared.

Concerned by the need to address overcrowding in correctional centres, the Ogun State House of Assembly has passed a resolution imploring the State Chief Judge and the State Ministry of Justice to conduct a comprehensive review of cases in all categories of courts in the state.

According to the House, the move is aimed at easing the plight of inmates and improving the overall justice system in the state.

The resolution, sponsored by the Minority Leader, Lukman Adeleye, followed a motion moved by the Majority Leader, Yusuf Sherif, and seconded by Lawal Samsideen during a plenary presided over by the Speaker, Oludaisi Elemide, at the Assembly Complex, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, on Tuesday.

Opening debate on the motion leading to the passage of the resolution, Adeleye lamented: “Data from the National Bureau of Statistics shows that Ogun State is one of the most congested in terms of inmates.

“The statistics further revealed that out of the 84,741 national inmate population, Ogun State tops the list of inmates on death row with 568 (also confirmed by the NCoS spokesperson).

“This alarming figures may be due to the financial pressure on the federal government, industrialization, population, proximity, crime rates, judicial processes, and the administrative actions of state governments, particularly the signing of death warrants or approval of clemency requests.”

Contributing, other members, including Honourables Oluseun Adesanya, Babatunde Tella, Adebisi Oyedele and Damilola Soneye, urged the Chief Judge and the State Ministry of Justice to step up measures to identify cases that could be expedited and resolved through alternative dispute resolution mechanisms, while reviewing bail applications and considering the release of inmates who meet the necessary criteria.

They appealed to all concerned stakeholders to fast-track the administrative process of examining cases of inmates who have served a significant portion of their sentences and consider possibilities for parole or pardon/clemency, while streamlining the judicial process to reduce delays and ensure timely justice delivery.

The Ogun State Government has commiserated with the family of Musa Yahaya Kalamu, who was killed by an elephant in Itasin, a community in Ijebu East Local Government Area of Ogun State.

DAILY POST learnt that Kalamu, aged 49, who was with his son when the incident occurred, died, while his son was lucky to escape.

In a video made available to our correspondent on Tuesday, Kalamu’s lifeless body was seen with his intestines exposed.

The development, however, triggered outrage in the community, where human-animal conflicts have been recorded several times.

The Ogun State Commissioner for Forestry, Oludotun Taiwo, speaking to journalists at his office, called for calm among residents and sympathised with the entire community.

Taiwo clarified that the area in question was a conservation zone and not farmland.

He disclosed that despite several warnings, sensitisation campaigns and even the demolition of illegal settlements, people kept returning there.

Taiwo said: “It’s a very sad incident. The place in question is a designated conservation area meant strictly for wildlife, especially elephants.

“Unfortunately, some people still go in there for illegal activities like logging. The man that died was reportedly trying to move illegal logs when the elephant attacked him.

“We’ve done a lot of sensitisation in that area. We’ve erected signboards, built barriers, and even demolished illegal settlements, but people keep going back. These elephants are not aggressive by nature. They only fight back when provoked. That’s why we keep educating the public not to confront them.”

He noted that on visiting the community, residents were hostile and did not receive them, but he promised to return the next day.

“This forest spans over 6,000 hectares. It’s not a farm settlement, and we don’t expect people to reside there. But due to human encroachment, conflicts like this sometimes happen.

“We sympathise with the family, and despite the hostility we met initially, we’ll still go back to condole with them and keep sensitizing the community,” he said.
