Vehicular movement along the Yelwata axis of the Benue–Nasarawa highway was brought to a standstill on Wednesday as Internally Displaced Persons, IDPs, staged a protest, demanding immediate return to their ancestral homes.
The protesters, believed to be victims of persistent attacks by suspected herdsmen, blocked both lanes of the busy highway for several hours, chanting “We want to go back home”.
The protest caused disruption, leaving hundreds of motorists and passengers stranded.
Eyewitnesses said the displaced persons, many of whom have spent years in overcrowded IDP camps, are expressing deep frustration over the government’s delay in restoring security to their communities.
“We have suffered enough. We want to return to our homes and farms,” one of the protesters told reporters at the scene.
Security personnel were reportedly deployed to monitor the situation and prevent any escalation, though tensions remained high as of press time.
Efforts to reach the Benue State Emergency Management Agency, SEMA, and other relevant authorities for comment were unsuccessful.

Tinubu Appoints Olumode Adeyemi As New FFS Boss
President Bola Tinubu has approved the appointment of Deputy Controller-General (DCG) Adeyemi Olumode, as the new Federal Fire Service (FFS) Controller-General (CG).
The appointment was announced on Wednesday on behalf of the Federal Government by the Secretary to the Civil, Defence, Correctional, Fire and Immigration Services Board (CDCFIB), Maj.-Gen Abdulmalik Jubril (rtd).
Jubril said that the appointment followed the retirement of the current CG, Abdulganiyu Jaji, on August 13.
The board, while appreciating Jaji’s dedication and commitment to service, added that Jaji will be retiring upon attaining the age of 60 on August 13.
Jubril further said that the new CG was qualified having attended and passed all mandatory in-service training, command courses, as well as other courses within and outside the country.
“He brings a wealth of experience to his new role, having transferred his service from the FCT Fire Service to the Federal Fire Service and grown to the rank of DCG in the Human Resource Directorate of the Service Headquarters.
“He has served in various capacities and is equally a member/fellow of the following professional associations including Association of National Accountants of Nigeria (ANAN), Institute of Corporate Administration of Nigeria, Institute of Public Administration of Nigeria and Chartered Institute of Treasury Management of Nigeria,” he said.(NAN)

There was heavy traffic at Yelewata in Benue State on Wednesday as Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) blocked the major highway, preventing vehicles from moving in or out of the state.
A human rights activist in Benue State, Ukan Kurugh, shared the incident on his official Facebook handle on Wednesday.
He said, “If you’re planning to travel into or out of Benue State, please put your journey on hold for now.
“At Yelewata, Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) have taken to the major highway, blocking both lanes for several hours, chanting in unison: “We want to go back home!”
According to the post, the protest has left many motorists and passengers stranded, as the displaced people expressed frustration over prolonged displacement and continued attacks from terrorist Fulani herdsmen.
Ukan Kurugh also confirmed the incident to DAILY Post in a telephone interview.
He said, “Yes, the protest is still ongoing. The people are protesting that they want to go back to their homes.”

Shinkafi stated this on Wednesday while speaking with newsmen in Gusau, the Zamfara State capital.
He called on the government to prosecute bandits-related offences in the state, describing the killings as “barbaric and ungodly,” while accusing the Federal Government of failing in its constitutional duty to protect lives and property.
The APC chieftain narrated how the victims abducted from Banga village in February were executed by the bandits despite payment of ransom by some of their relatives.
Shinkafi said the accounts of the released victims revealed horrifying acts committed by the kidnappers during captivity.
“These innocent people were kidnapped in February, 53 of them were kidnapped, including male and female, the bandit kingpin imposed a ransom of N1 million per head, and only 18 relatives were able to pay.
“One of the people who was released by the bandits reported to the community that the remaining people were brutally killed.
“They were not slaughtered by the bandits, one after the other, you carry your relation and slaughter him by yourself, two people who resisted slaughtering their relations and were shot dead instantly,” he said.

The Federal Government College, Kaduna, received a major boost, Tuesday as its old students awarded over N7 million in scholarships and cash awards to students, with a pledge to provide more than 1,000 computer laptops to aid learning across the college.
The donations made at the school’s annual speech and prize-giving day, was held at the college premises organised by the Federal Government College Kaduna Old Students’ Association (FGCKADOSA). The celebration brought together prominent alumni, including Major General Abdul Khalifa Ibrahim, Commandant of the Nigerian Defence Academy, and former Governor of Jigawa State, Senator Saminu Turaki, who chaired the programme.
Turaki adopted the school’s best student, Joseph Dominion Obi, offering him a full university scholarship. Obi also received an additional N1 million scholarship from another alumnus, as well as nearly N600,000 in cash prizes for his academic excellence.
In a major gesture, Turaki and his 1980 graduating set promised to deliver over 1,000 laptops to all students by the next academic year. “The move will go a long way in transforming digital learning and set an example for other public schools,” he stated.
In his keynote titled ‘The Making of Leaders and My FGC Kaduna Experience’, the Guest Speaker, Major General Ibrahim emphasised the role of mentorship, quality education and leadership, urging students to strive for greatness and view alumni as examples of success.
In his remarks, FGCKADOSA Global President, Mr. Seyi Gambo, stressed the importance of alumni support for public schools, citing the recent sponsorship of four students and two coaches by the association to represent Nigeria at an international robotics competition in California, a first in the school’s history.
The school’s Principal, Prince Adewale Adeyanju, expressed gratitude to the alumni, describing the day as a milestone in the school’s history. He commended the leadership of FGCKADOSA, the inspirational message from Ibrahim, and Turaki’s game-changing laptop pledge, saying it all underscored a bright future for the students and Nigerian education at large.

A human rights activist and social crusader, Dr Bolaji Akinyemi, has approached a Federal High Court sitting in Lagos to challenge the legality of the extension of the tenure of the Comptroller of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, by President Bola Tinubu.
The suit numbered FHC/L/CS/1495/2025, was brought pursuant to the Fundamental Rights (Enforcement Procedure) Rules, 2009, and relevant sections of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended) and the Nigeria Customs Service Act, 2023.
The suit named President Bola Tinubu, Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, Minister of Finance, Wale Edun, Nigeria Customs Service, Nigeria Customs Service Governing Board, Office of the Comptroller General of the Nigeria Customs and Excise Services, and the Comptroller General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, as respondents.
Addressing journalists in Enugu on Tuesday, the claimant’s counsels, Newworth LLP (legal practitioners) said the originating summons challenged the purported extension or continued stay in office of the Customs Comptroller General, Adeniyi, beyond May 5, 2025, which marked the end of his statutory tenure.
According to the plaintiff’s counsels, the issues for determination are: “Whether the President has the constitutional or statutory authority under Section 14(1) of the Nigeria Customs Service Act (2023 as amended) to extend the tenure of Mr. Adeniyi after he proceeds on terminal leave.
“Whether Mr. Adeniyi can legally continue to act in the capacity of Comptroller General beyond his exit date without violating the rights and due process expectations of Nigerians, particularly Dr. Akinyemi, who claims this impinges on his right to life, dignity, and democratic governance.”
The suit is asking the court to declare that the Customs boss’ extension or continued stay in office is illegal and unconstitutional, as well as restraining orders barring both the President and Adeniyi from executing or accepting any such tenure extension.
The plaintiff’s counsel added, “This suit underscores a growing concern over the abuse of executive powers in the appointment and tenure elongation of key public office holders, often at the expense of the Constitution, institutional integrity, and the public interest.
“This is not just about one office holder—it is about preserving legality, transparency, and accountability in the governance of our nation. Customs is a vital institution, and illegality at the top compromises national security, economic stability, and citizens’ trust.”
