Residents of Ilaje Road in the Bariga area of Lagos have staged a protest against the recent decision of the Bariga Local Council Development Area, LCDA, to rename the road after music legend, King Sunny Ade.
The protest, which took place on Wednesday, drew community members who described the renaming as a disregard for their heritage and an attempt to erase their cultural identity.
The controversial name change was reportedly approved by the immediate past LCDA chairman, David Kolade Alabi, just before the end of his tenure, despite earlier opposition from residents.
Addressing the protesters, the Baale of Ilaje/Bariga, High Chief Kayode Ayetiwa, disclosed that the newly sworn-in LCDA chairperson, Bukola Adedeji, had called him ahead of the protest, appealing for patience and promising to reverse the decision. However, the community proceeded with the protest and also submitted a formal petition to the council.
Ayetiwa stressed that the name Ilaje Road has been in existence since 1948 and represents an important part of the community’s history and identity.
“We will not allow the legacy and name of Ilaje Road to be erased, no matter how prominent the individual chosen for the renaming may be,” the Baale said.
The community’s protest letter described the former chairman’s action as unconstitutional and carried out without the consent of local councillors.
Raphael Irowanu, President General of Egbe Omo Ilaje, voiced concerns about what he called a larger pattern of marginalisation, noting that the Ilaje population in Lagos State numbers around four million people with strong ancestral ties to Yoruba history.
According to him, the road renaming, coupled with ongoing demolitions affecting the community, points to an attempt to displace and undermine the Ilaje people.
He warned that continued disregard for their concerns could have political repercussions for the All Progressives Congress, APC, in the 2027 elections.
While acknowledging that King Sunny Ade, like the Ilaje people, hails from Ondo State, Irowanu maintained that naming the road after the musician would only create division rather than foster unity.
Protesters displayed placards calling for the restoration of the road’s original name and insisting that Ilaje Road remains a symbol of their history and must not be changed.

Kwara State Government has scheduled a special troubleshooting session to address all pending complaints regarding payment of salary and pension to civil servants and pensioners, DAILY POST reports.
The troubleshooting session will be held daily at each of the 16 local government headquarters in the state between Thursday July 31 and August 4, 2025 — except Sunday, August 3.
“All affected individuals — serving civil servants and pensioners, are required to appear in person with their BVN; NIN; KWSRRA Number; PSN Number; bank account statements; employment letter; work/pension identity card; and other details they consider relevant to resolve their complaints,” according to a statement by the State Commissioner of Finance Dr Hauwa Nuru, in Ilorin on Wednesday.
The statement said the session will be led by cabinet members from each of the local government areas and relevant technocrats from various MDAs.
Dr Nuru added that while majority of the civil servants and pensioners have no issues with their salary or pension, “we acknowledge that there are isolated cases of individuals who still have pending complaints affecting seamless payment of their salary and pension.
“This session is to resolve all such pending issues once and for all, in line with the commitment of Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq that every worker or pensioner deserves their pay at the right time, according to a statement by the press secretary of the ministry, Babatunde Toyin Abdul Rasheed.

Kaduna–Kano Rail to Be Completed in 2026, Says Minister
The Minister of Transportation, Saidu Alkali, has said the northern region is among the biggest beneficiaries of President Bola Tinubu’s infrastructure drive under the Renewed Hope Agenda.
Speaking at the Government-citizens’ Engagement Interactive Session organised by the Sir Ahmadu Bello Memorial Foundation in Kaduna on Wednesday, the minister said Tinubu’s administration has revived and accelerated multiple road and rail projects across the north.
Alkali disclosed that the Kaduna to Kano standard gauge rail project, which was just 15 per cent completed when the current administration came in, has now reached 53 per cent and is expected to be completed in 2026.
According to him, the Kano to Maradi rail line has also seen massive progress, moving from five per cent to 61 per cent completion, with sections of the Port Harcourt to Maiduguri narrow gauge rail corridor also underway.
He said the Sokoto to Badagry Superhighway, a 1,068km stretch linking Sokoto, Kebbi, Niger, Kwara, Oyo Ogun, and Lagos States, is one of the signature projects under Tinubu’s push for national connectivity and economic integration.
“The north is not left out. In fact, it is reaping big from this government’s infrastructure revolution.
“From roads and rail to inland ports and power, the evidence is on ground,” Alkali said.
The minister credited Tinubu’s personal intervention with Chinese authorities for unlocking stalled funding and enabling work to resume on key projects that had faced delays.
He stated that the ministry has also begun the rehabilitation of the Lagos to Kano narrow gauge line to support freight movement and bring the inland dry ports into full use, particularly in Kano and Kaduna.
Alkali listed several ongoing works in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), including new road interchanges, four-span bridges and dualised carriageways aimed at easing movement and expanding access to the capital from surrounding states.
He revealed that over 3,000 housing units had been constructed across the north under the Renewed Hope Cities Initiative, with ongoing projects in Kano, Katsina, Gombe, Yobe, Benue and the FCT.
In the energy sector, the minister said the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) has installed over 1,100 standalone solar systems and 32 mini-grids across five North-east states, boosting access to off-grid power.
He added that plans are underway to establish modern transport terminals in each geopolitical zone, with compressed natural gas (CNG) refuelling points, security outposts and sanitation facilities.
Alkali said the Institute of Transport Technology in Zaria is now a hub for training technicians in CNG vehicles’ conversion, in line with the administration’s post-subsidy cost-reduction strategy.
He also confirmed that the Federal Government had rescued and revived the Federal University of Transportation, Daura project, with the National Universities Commission (NUC) now providing mentorship and guiding academic development.
The minister maintained that Tinubu was committed to equitable development across the six geopolitical zones, stressing that the north has no reason to feel left out under the current administration.
He called on northern leaders, civil society and traditional institutions to support the government’s efforts and ensure that projects were sustained and protected from sabotage.
Contributing to the discussion, the Minister of State for Works, Alhaji Bello Goronyo, underscored the strategic importance of the Sokoto to Zaria Highway, which he described as a vital economic corridor under active reconstruction.
He said four contractors were currently on site along the stretch.
The minister said: “CBC is handling the Sokoto,Talata Mafara axis with 24km of reinforced concrete already completed; while other firms are working simultaneously from Talata Mafara to Kwatarkwashi, Kwatarkwashi to Funtua, and Shika to Zaria.”
Goronyo said that dozens of bridges were under construction along the corridor, and praised the continuous inspection efforts being carried out by him and the Minister of Works to ensure value for money and quality delivery.
He explained that several abandoned projects were being re-evaluated and re-awarded due to renewed budgetary focus and Tinubu’s insistence on completing legacy infrastructure in all zones. (NAN)

A group under the auspices of the Plateau Patriotic Front, PPF, has challenged the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria, MACBAN, to prove that the Fulani people have suffered injustice in the state.
The challenge is coming on the heels of a recent statement by the National Secretary of MACBAN, Bello Gotomo, who claimed that the waves of attacks and killings the state attributed to Fulani militias are a result of the injustice the Fulani people have suffered.
But in a statement by the National Coordinator of PFF, Mani Imman, the socio-political group tasked MACBAN to present incontrovertible evidence that the Fulani people have been denied justice or have been marginalized.
In the statement, Imman described Gotomo’s allegations as far-fetched and a figment of his imagination as well as an open admission of complicity in the violence that had claimed thousands of lives across Plateau’s rural communities.
Imman also called on security agencies to arrest and prosecute the MACBAN Secretary over the attacks and killings in the state since he seems to know the perpetrators.
Imman noted that Gotomo’s comments are not only reckless and inflammatory but also amount to an open confession as far as the assailants are concerned.
He added that Gotomo’s remarks not only indict the Fulani militia as the attackers and killers of innocent people in the state, but also a clear admission that MACBAN knows and endorses their actions.

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has clarified that its Early Exit Package rolled out in 2024 was purely voluntary and not designed to target employees from Northern Nigeria, contrary to some circulating claims.
Muhammad Abdullahi, Deputy Governor in charge of Economic Policy at the apex bank, made the clarification in Kaduna during a panel discussion at a two-day interactive forum on government-citizen engagement hosted by the Sir Ahmadu Bello Memorial Foundation.
He said the initiative was introduced due to the overcrowded conditions at the CBN headquarters in Abuja, and had no regional or ethnic motives.
“The bank was so crowded at the headquarters and jam-packed that there was no space; the limited space and exit routes in the building were converted to offices, and hence not healthy for the workers,” he said.
He added that the severe congestion raised safety concerns from insurers, prompting the need to reduce the number of staff at the Abuja location.
“Due to the crowded and suffocating space, the insurance company expressed serious concerns about securing the building with its insurance policy, hence the need for decongestion.
“Meanwhile, there are ample spaces in the Bank’s offices in Lagos, Kaduna and other places that could absorb a large number of workers from the headquarters.
“Some of those staff members taken to Lagos and Kaduna are now so happy that they don’t even want to come back to Abuja.
“It is not an agenda against anybody,’’ he added. Abdullahi explained that the practice of offering early retirement or exit options isn’t new within the institution.
“When such is observed, the governor will constitute a committee comprising the staff members, and they will come out with an offer, but only for those who want to take it. It is voluntary, not forced on anyone.
“Some workers were very happy to take the exit offer and establish a microfinance bank.
“So, is an opportunity for those who want to move ahead and do other things with their lives,” he explained.
