The Adeoyo Hospital in Ibadan has discharged patients on admission following the nationwide strike embarked on by the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives, NANNM, which began on Wednesday.
Recall that the association directed its members to start a seven-day warning strike following the Federal Government’s failure to respond to their demands.
DAILY POST reports that some of the demands of the nurses are the upward review of shift allowance, uniform allowance adjustment, a separate salary structure for nurses, increased core duty allowance.
Also included in the demands are mass employment of nurses, and the establishment of a nursing department in the Federal Ministry of Health, among others.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria, many of the wards in Adeoyo State Hospital, Ring Road, Ibadan had no patients on admission at the hospital.
The patients were reportedly discharged with just a few in critical condition still on the wards, but with no nurses to attend to them.
Speaking, a relative of one of the patients at the female ward, Mr Adegoke Rahman, said some of the patients in the ward were told to go home due to the nurses’ strike.
Rahman said his mother, who was still at the hospital ward, just had an operation on her leg and could not walk or use it to stand.
He said that doctors were the ones attending to them and no nurse was presently working at the hospital.
Also, Mr Samuel Biyi, an out patient, said that he came to the hospital to treat a wound on his leg and was not attended to.
He said that the leg was seriously paining him.
One of the doctors on duty, who pleaded that his name shouldn’t be published, said that doctors and other medical personnel were not on strike and were attending to patients.
He, however, said that the hospital was not currently taking patients on admission, but attending to out patients.
The doctor said that any patient with critical condition not admitted were referred to private hospitals for treatment.
He said that the patients on admission had been told to go home since yesterday because of the nurses’ strike.
It would be recalled that the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives, NANNM, Oyo State chapter, directed its members to comply with the seven- day nationwide warning strike starting from Wednesday.
The Oyo State NANNM Secretary, Comrade Emmanuel Aina, made this known in a statement on Tuesday.
Aina said the decision arose from the resolution of the emergency meeting of the National Executive Council of NANNM and subsequent directive received from NANNM National Headquarters.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested seven Chinese and four Nigerians including a lady over alleged illegal mining in Akwa Ibom State.
The Head, Media & Publicity of EFCC in the state, Dele Oyewale, disclosed that operatives of the Uyo Zonal Directorate arrested the suspects at Emem-Asuk community, Eastern Obolo Local Government Area of the state.
According to Oyewale, “The suspects are seven Chinese identified as: Yang Chaobao, 32; Zhong Dun Yi , 33; Cheng Jiang , 35, Zhong Dun Long , 37, Pan Peiming , 33; Lai Yiping, 37 and Zhu Lekun, 35. Their Nigerian accomplices are: David Israel, 18; Jonah Bartholomew Jim, 24; Samuel Samuel Timothy, 20, and a female translator named Comfort Gabriel Ajaga, 23.
“The suspects are operating two illegal mining sites at Eastern Obolo Local Government Area where they were arrested whilst setting up mining equipment at a second location.
“They were already engaged in illegal mining activities at their first location where they were mining ilmenite locally called ‘black sand’.
“During questioning, the only female among the suspects said her only connection to the illegal miners was her proficiency in ‘Mandarin’, a widely spoken language in China.”
He said the arrested female, Ajaga, said: “I am a student, and I am studying Chinese language at a Learning Centre in Anambra State and I only work with them as a translator,” she said.
The EFCC spokeman said the suspects will be charged to court upon conclusion of investigation.

Former member, House of Representatives, Muhammad Kazaure has said that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu may lose the 2027 presidential election by 12 noon.
Kazaure disclosed this in a viral video released by AIT on Wednesday, through X.
The former federal lawmaker was speaking in the midst of an opposition coalition aimed at unseating Tinubu in the 2027 general elections.
He lamented the country’s rising debt profile and the economic hardship Nigerians face.
“With a free and fair election, I can assure you by 12 noon he will have lost the 2027 election.”
He, however, did not state how he intends to unseat Tinubu come 2027.
His comments come as the opposition coalition, through the Africa Democratic Congress rally, some of the country’s political elites to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress in 2027.
Meanwhile, Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Policy Communication, Daniel Bwala, has dismissed the political weight of ADC, saying that the party will not last six months.
