Young professionals from Old Bende in Abia State have dismissed claims that Governor Alex Otti has been endorsed for a second term ahead of 2027.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the group, Old Bende Young Professionals, debunked the purported endorsement of Otti by the member representing Aba North/Aba South Federal Constituency, Hon. Mascot Ikwechegh, as “null and void” since it failed to meet all democratic criteria.

In the statement signed by the president, Barr. Chima Charles Ogbonnaya, and the secretary, Dyke Chidozie Okwara, the group described those who participated in the event as impostors, noting that they did not have the mandate of the Old Bende people to take such a weighty decision.

According to the group, Hon. Ikwechegh abandoned his legislative duties of representing the people of Aba to dabble in a matter he clearly lacked the power and capacity to address.

It noted that, in the first instance, the governorship should rightly be occupied by the people of Abia North in Old Bende come 2027, while a meeting is yet to be convened to deliberate on whom the zone should support.

“What happened in Hon. Ikwechegh’s sitting room is a parody of the absurd. It was premature and presumptuous. If it were in the military, all those who attended that circus show should have been court-martialled,” the group averred.

“If Ikwechegh is genuinely committed to serving the people of Old Bende, he should consider contesting for the House of Representatives in Bende come 2027 and relinquish his current seat to the Ngwa people to promote fairness, equity, and rotational leadership.”

“Ikwechegh’s current shenanigans and undemocratic and self-centred political acts are unacceptable and a blatant disregard for democratic principles and the autonomy of our region, Old Bende,” the young professionals concluded.

In its bid to safeguard public health and food security in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), the FCT Administration (FCTA) will soon commence a comprehensive hepatitis screening of food handlers, especially those working in restaurants, markets, bakeries, canteens.

The initiative is aimed at preventing hepatitis and other foodborne diseases, thereby protecting public health and empowering food businesses to operate with enhanced confidence and credibility.

This was contained in the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike’s goodwill message, marking the World Hepatitis Day 2025.

The goodwill message delivered on behalf of the Minister by the Mandate Secretary, Health Services and Environment Secretariat, Dr Adedolapo Fasawe, reads in part, “Hepatitis A and E, primarily transmitted through contaminated food and water, can rapidly spread through poor hygiene practices, posing serious risks in our rapidly expanding and cosmopolitan city of Abuja.

“Furthermore, Hepatitis B and C, predominantly spread through blood and bodily fluids, still pose a risk in food environments where open wounds or poor hygiene are present.”

The FCT Minister described food handlers as an overlooked group whose role is pivotal in safeguarding public health.

“Therefore, the FCT Administration, committed to safeguarding public health and food security, is launching a strategic initiative to enhance food safety through comprehensive hepatitis screening of food handlers. This ambitious initiative is being scaled up through an innovative Public-Private Partnership (PPP) consortium, in alignment with the National Policy on Food Safety and Quality.

“This PPP consortium will combine efficiency, technical expertise, and funding capacity of the private sector with government oversight to implement regular and mandatory Hepatitis B and C screening for all food handlers within the FCT

“We urge all stakeholders, government agencies, private enterprises, healthcare providers, and food industry operators to actively support this transformative initiative through the mandatory hepatitis screenings for food handlers, promotion of free and effective Hepatitis B vaccination at public health facilities, enforcement of standardized food safety training inclusive of hepatitis awareness, rigorous enforcement of licensing, hygiene inspections, and medical screening requirements for food vendors and handlers and raising awareness and compassionately addressing the stigma surrounding hepatitis.”

“To us, food handlers are not just service providers, they are essential public health stewards. Simple, consistent, and safe hygiene practices can significantly reduce hepatitis transmission.

“Therefore, let us break the silence. Hygiene cannot wait. Screening cannot wait. Action cannot wait. Together, let’s ensure that the FCT leads by example, turning our food industry into a symbol of health, safety, and excellence.”

The National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, has called on terrorists and bandits operating in northern Nigeria to put an end to their violent activities and surrender peacefully.

He warned that the era of terrorizing communities must now come to an end.

Ribadu gave the charge during an interview with the BBC, where he highlighted what he described as notable gains under the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in curbing insecurity.

“We believe the time has come for these terrorists to stop and lay down their arms,” Ribadu said.

Despite acknowledging ongoing incidents of violence, Ribadu emphasized that the current government has made “significant progress” in its fight against insecurity, particularly by reducing large-scale terrorist operations nationwide.

“In the past, terrorists used to attack prisons, trains, and military camps, but since this government came into power, we have stopped that.

“There has not been a single major terrorist attack since this administration took over, except for those in Borno,” he explained.

The security adviser further claimed that the military and other security agencies have successfully neutralised hundreds of top-level bandits.

He stressed that about 300 top bandit leaders were neutralised through various military actions.

“Now many people have returned to their farms, and areas that were previously inaccessible due to insecurity are now open again,” Ribadu added.

His comments come at a time when parts of the country, like Plateau, Benue, Katsina and others have continued to face recurring attacks by armed groups.

The African Democratic Congress, ADC, has reacted to stiff opposition against President Bola Tinubu from the northern region ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

DAILY POST reports that some stakeholders in the region have vowed that the president’s re-election bid may remain a mirage, citing alleged marginalisation of the North by the Tinubu-led administration.

Recall that a former member of the House of Representatives, Muhammad Kazaure, on Wednesday said that Tinubu may lose the 2027 presidential election by 12 noon.

Speaking during a gathering of northern elites, the former lawmaker condemned the administration’s continued borrowing and other ‘unwanted’ policies.

Reacting, the spokesperson of the ADC, Bolaji Abdullahi, in a post on his Facebook page, wondered how the president would secure his re-election amid the opposition from the North.

According to him, the region produced 64 per cent of the votes that gave the All Progressives Congress, APC, victory in 2023.

He wrote, “Arewa produced 64% of President Bola TInubu’s total votes in 2023, I don’t know how he is planning to secure his 2nd term bid without them, as they’re now clearly against his reelection.”

The Niger State Government has revealed that over 320 patients have been treated, discharged, and declared free from cholera, while fewer than 10 remain on admission.

Speaking during a live radio programme tagged Media Chat, organised by the State Ministry of Information and Strategy and monitored by DAILY POST, the Commissioner for Primary Health Care, Dr Ibrahim Ahmed Dangana, explained that the situation has been brought under control.

He stated that currently fewer than 10 persons are on admission across the state, adding that water treatment kits and other consumables donated by UNICEF have been distributed to over 14,000 households to curtail the outbreak.

The commissioner disclosed that 14 deaths have so far been recorded and, out of the 327 patients hospitalised, fewer than 10 remain on admission across the state for cholera.

He said, “After the outbreak, the state immediately activated the State Inter Sectoral on Emergency Preparedness and Response; the Emergency Operation Centres, in the state and activated the Disease Surveillance Systems in the 274 wards and communities across 25 LGs of the state.

“We identified isolation centres and similarly, we have what we call Cholera Treatment Units, CTU, in all the 25 LGAs across the state and these have really helped us in curbing the spread.

“The ministry, with support from various MDAs and partners like UNICEF, was very active and I can tell you that we are winning the battle against cholera.”

Dr Dangana further said the ministry has embarked on aggressive sensitisation by reaching out to over 16,000 people, including schoolchildren, markets, and religious and traditional institutions, to create awareness about the disease.

When contacted, the Health Specialist, UNICEF Kaduna Field Office, Dr Idris Baba, explained that the supplies provided so far are sufficient to treat all cases currently identified and admitted in the state.

He disclosed that some of the items include community and periphery AWD kits, cholera kits, 40 cholera beds, Ringer’s lactate, normal saline with giving sets, antibiotics, scrubs, disposable gowns, heavy-duty and surgical gloves, boots, water purification tablets, chlorine solutions, calcium hypochlorite, and water and stool testing RDTs.

Earlier, the Niger State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Hon Binta Mamman, stated that immediately the cholera outbreak was reported, the state embarked on sensitisation to tackle the situation.
