The president of the Saint Lucian Senate, Alvina Reynolds, on Monday, underscored Nigeria’s and Saint Lucian ancestral links by quoting the result of a British census conducted on the island in 1815, which showed that most of the residents came from Nigeria.

“Of the 16,282 enslaved people in Saint Lucia that year, 3,488 were born in Africa. Of these, 34% were from Nigeria, 11% from Nigeria-Cameroon, and 22% from the Congo. The remaining 12,794 were born in Saint Lucia, with most of their forefathers coming from Senegambia and Nigeria.”

She reeled out the figures in her address as she welcomed President Bola Tinubu to the joint session of the Lucian bicameral parliament on Monday.

She said President Tinubu’s presence is historic for this Parliament and the people of Saint Lucia.

She noted that the legacy of the transatlantic slave trade, which spanned more than 350 years, forged an unbreakable historical and cultural link between Africa and the Caribbean.

She described President Tinubu’s arrival as the rekindling of “a mission to reunite us with our homeland and for our people to work together.”

The Senate President also paid tribute to one of Saint Lucia’s most distinguished sons, Sir Darnley Alexander.

Alexander journeyed to Nigeria in 1957 and rose through the legal ranks to become the Chief Justice of Nigeria from 1975 to 1979, the only non-Nigerian to hold the office in Nigeria’s post-independence history.

“This mission, Your Excellency, continues with Catholic priests from Nigeria who have answered the call and come to Saint Lucia to serve, one of whom is our special guest this morning, Father Festus.”

“Your address to this Parliament today could not have occurred at a more auspicious time, for today is World Parliament Day, an occasion to reflect on the essential role of Parliament and the service we provide as representatives to our people.”

The Commander General and Chief Executive Officer, Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement, TRACE, Olaseni Ogunyemi, has bowed out of service.

Speaking at the retirement and pull-out parade held at the TRACE Headquarters, Ajebo Road, Abeokuta, the State Head of Service, Kehinde Onasanya praised Ogunyemi for his discipline, doggedness, professionalism and firmness, describing him as an icon, trailblazer and innovator as well as an articulate Commander General who had inculcated good qualities into the officers and in turn boost the operations of the Agency across the State.

Represented by the Permanent Secretary, Bureau of Service Matters, Dipo Ogunfowora, charged the most senior officer who would take over from him not to let the flags down but leverage on the standard set by the retiring Commander and surpass them as well as ensure due diligence in line with the extant rules guiding the State Civil Service.

He said, “You started well in 2015 and ended well 10 years after. You built a new crop of dedicated and diligent officers that have continued to make our dear State proud, driving the establishment with new technology”.

In his good will message, Commissioner for Transportation, Gbenga Dairo described Commander Ogunyemi, as an amiable and reliable person, who goes out of his way to ensure the success and well-being of others, expressing hope that his subordinates would carry on the good legacy by discharging their traffic duties diligently as well as make the State government proud.

He advised Ogunyemi to put together his memoirs to educate the public on how he was able to maintain a high professional standard in TRACE.

In his response, Commander General Ogunyemi, appreciated the State Government, paramount rulers and other notable individuals for gracing the occasion.

Notorious bandit kingpin, Bello Turji is allegedly making overtures for peace in the aftermath of the death of his top field commander and cousin, Kachalla Yellow Danbokolo.

Turji is one of the most wanted terror leaders in Nigeria’s North West.

DAILY POST reports that Danbokolo was recently neutralised by security operatives.

This was made known in X post on Monday by Zagazola Makama, a counter insurgency expert and security analyst in the Lake Chad region, citing multiple sources.

Makama disclosed that Turji was said to be calling for a meeting with other bandit groups, reportedly to discuss the possibility of surrendering and entering into dialogue with the government of the three states of the North West.

According to the report, Turji’s sudden pivot toward peace may be directly linked to the loss of Danbokolo.

The deceased commander served as the engine of Turji’s terror network, orchestrating and executing violent raids, ambushes, and mass abductions across Zamfara, Sokoto, and Katsina States.

“Turji was mostly the public face. It was Danbokolo who led the fighting forces, ran the logistics, and enforced their authority in the forest corridors. This is the first time he has been truly exposed. Without Danbokolo, his operational muscles is crippled,” said a source familiar with the group’s structure.

The security expert stated that security sources believe Turji’s current overture may not be out of genuine repentance but a tactical response to mounting pressure and operational losses.

Security agencies are yet to officially comment on Turji’s reported peace gestures, though analysts advise caution, warning that any engagement should be how to neutralize him.

“Turji must not be forgiven. The government must reject his plea to surrender,” Makama said, citing intelligence sources.

Announcing this in a statement, the Minister of Information, Muhammad Idris, said the shift in the burial date of the businessman was necessitated by the late arrival of his body to the City of Medina.

Speaking to BBC Hausa service, the Minister explained that there are rules and regulations upon which the Saudi Arabian Government receive corpses from outside its country and they are now aligning with those regulations to complete the arrangement.

The Minister said they would complete all the necessary legal requirements by Tuesday after which Dantata would be buried same day.

In the same vein the Kano and Jigawa State Governor’s in the company of the 16th Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II and former Governor of Jigawa State, Ali Saad Birnin Kudu are already in Medina for the burial.
